@@TractorTimewithTim I've been heavily involved in the ¾ & 1-ton truck segment for 20 years and have always said they're all good (exc. maybe the '03½-10 6.0L Ford Diesels). They all have their pros & cons. Just hope you get one built on a good day. The good thing is other than the government mandates, which have hurt all 3 and especially the Diesels, the competition has made everyone up their game. Today's ½ tons can tow what a one-ton dually could 25 years ago. Unfortunately their prices have gone up tremendously as well and not in proportion to the improvements. The big 3 make a LOT of $ on these trucks because they know that they share a monopoly on the market as the foreign manufacturers have just not been willing to venture into the full-size pickup segment for whatever reason.

You certainly made the right choice. I bought a 3500 with the diesel in 2017. Since I knew I would be towing the majority of the time with the truck, I wanted something that would be able to take anything I threw at it. Overkill is always better than underkill in my opinion.

The CDL requirements can render that rule invalid. Optimization is important in that case.
@KD7CAO

@@TractorTimewithTim This rule varies state to state. There are federal regulations, but in most cases my experience is that an F350 Dually can have a truck that is rated for the 26,001 lbs (if ordered that way) and that would make it a Class B, a trailer added for 12,001 or greater it is now a Class A. If you use the same trailer on a truck rated at 26,000 or less and it stays a Class C. Depends on your state's rules too. Commerce operations can make a passenger car a commercial vehicle. Also carrying more than a certain weight of fuel in a transfer tank can require Hazmat endorsement.

Great information. I drove an F-250 and an F-350 as work trucks. They were the exact same package except for the Diesel engine in the 350 and a gasoline engine in the 250. The extra power in the Diesel engine was worth the cost difference as far as towing power. My personal vehicle is an F-150 with the 5.0 engine. It has plenty of power to tow anything that I might need to. My biggest issue now is that I didn't get the trailer brakes when I purchased my trailer. I didn't think far enough in advance and never planned of towing anything heavy enough to require trailer brakes. Thanks for all of your great information!!!

We started with a Dodge 3500 with a 35’ gooseneck on the farm.... it towed A LOT and frankly with two 7 series JD’s, Bobcat, and hundreds of hay bales to move it was over worked and ate brake pads pretty quick. So we stepped up to a Ram 4500 (crew cab w/ a 9’6” hay bed since it was a cab and chassis truck) and an international 9200i semi truck with a 53’ step deck. And kept the 3500 just for checking cows and moving hay with the hay bed.

I did a logging buisness for years and to avoid CDLs i had a modified 1/2 ton chevy 4x4 and a triaxle car and equipment trailer that i could put log bunks on for logs. I often had gross weights of 22,000 with that set up with very little problems ever. The biggest trick is not be in a hurry but take your time.

My only suggestion is to get an air shock (Air Lift, Ride-Rite) system for the rear. I have had air shocks in the last three 1-ton trucks as it provides a way to level the truck to compensate for rear squat with the load weight. The truck rides better and controls the load better. Another benefit of the level truck is that the headlights are aimed onto the road instead of into the eyes of oncoming drivers. My personal choice is the Ride-Rite air bags with the Air Lift compressor and controller. The Ride-Rite bags are a heavier material, while the Air Lift compressor / controller is heavier duty, and provides independent control of the bags.

I've always bought more truck than I thought I needed it & never regretted it. I've also never had a short bed & have never regretted that either. I've also always had Diesel but my thoughts on that have been "evolving" & I think for many, except maybe those towing extremely heavy, gas is becoming a very viable solution whereas 10 or 20 years ago that may not have been the case. You have it m/l correct wrt the difference bet. a ¾ & 1-ton. In general, the tires become the limiting factor (there are solutions there too which maybe we'll explore sometime).

I'm one of those guys that think that anything less than an 8' bed is crazy... Until I got my tool box in the back of the truck. I turned my 8' bed into a 6' bed just like that. The difference being that I can still put 8' lumber or anything else 8' in under the bed since it has about a foot or so between the bottom of the box and the floor of the deck. I have a conventional cab so my overall length is probably about the same as yours with the back doors. Most of the time the tool box isn't a problem, but one time recently I was picking up some kitchen cabinets for a customer and if I didn't have that box in there I could have gotten them all in one trip. If I know I'll need the space, I can always take the box out and presto, I have an 8' bed again. The trouble with that is that it takes a while to unload the box so I can lift it out of the bed and put it back in again since I'm usually working alone. Most of life's choices are a compromise so we do the best we can with what we have to work with. Love your videos. Keep them coming.

As my dad always says, you can't have a big enough truck and trailer in this business ( within reason of course). A half ton might have done the job but they're not meant to tow that much weight like you seam to be towing. Good thing you went with a 350 as you can keep it and grow into it especially if you're pulling both pieces of equipment multiple times. Not to mention, it's not just about the everyday, but also those few times you own the truck that the extra power really pays off. My dad was going to go with the 5.3 in his new truck, luckely decided the 6.2 was best and ended up pulling an excavator with it a few months after owning it.

I drive a 2001 F350 7.3L Diesel Crewcab 4x4. It takes an acre or five lanes to turn 180. But, I love the size. I would drive a Pete if I had one. Actually considering new trucks myself right now and the F550, Ram 5500, Chevy/GMC 5500 are all being looked at. I am also considering the International Terrastar. They use the same cab as the larger Durastar and wow is it roomy. I don't haul trailers often, but want my options open. I hold a CDL Interstate Class A license so size is not an issue. Actually, one of my work vehicles we call Goliath is a 53 foot Freightliner Argosy straight truck. It is a Mobile Command and Communication Center for disaster response. That thing is a monster at 13 foot 6 inches tall. But, it cruises with Red and Blues on at 95 MPH. I know the 6.75 bed is the new standard and the 8 is the long, but my first truck was a 1981 Chevy 454 Big Block Crewcab and it had a 12 foot bed. That thing took more space than Goliath to turn around.

As someone who has never owned a gas engine pickup (I think I've had 5 Diesels), I think that tide is changing. The emissions regs have favored the gas engine trucks. The Diesel option has gotten extremely expensive, fuel is much more expensive, maintainence is mor expensive, fuel economy has suffered, and the gas engines have been upped in HP ratings & transmissions behind them. The Diesels are also harder on front end parts & brakes and reduce payload capacity. Diesels do still hold the advantage in longevity (I think) and for extremely heavy towing and maybe even a slight advantage in fuel economy, but the days of automatically choosing Diesel over gas are over and I never thought I'd be the one to say that.

Watch Big Truck Big RV channel for reviews on truck reviews, such as gas vs. diesel. I think you picked the correct truck and color combination. Parking and tight spaces are always an issue. Yours is the most popular configuration, which will hold its value better. On the new aluminum trucks, the F350 has an upgraded transmission over the the F250 in addition to more rear springs. If you go on longer towing trips you may want to consider getting a larger aftermarket replacement gas tank, such as a Titan. If you do only order directly from the manufacturer to ensure that you get a brand new one.

My current pickup is a ‘11 F 350 crew cab DRW with 3.73 gears and eight foot bed. It is a beast to park in small spots like you said. I have Sulastic spring hangers and air bags on the rear. The stock rear suspension was not as sturdy under load as my 05 Dodge DRW. I tow a Bighorn fifth wheel that weighs around 15000 lbs and a boat bass boat behind it. I’m just a bit over length. The rig will run down the highway at 75 mph with a 40 mph crosswind at 90 degrees. . I also an excavator that weighs around 20000 that I pull on a gooseneck. This gear ratio is the best of both worlds. It gives decent mileage and great power. I get 10 to 12 mpg loaded depending on wind. I have a 55 gallon aux tank . I have a friend that did not opt for the diesel. He has a GM 3500 SRW with a 6.5 bed. He recently moved a neighbor from central KS to central CO. With the short bed he only has a 24 gallon tank. At 6 mpg he did not pass up very many gas stations. The cost of maintaining the diesel is considerably higher. Just a few things to consider.

These Tuesday videos are great. You can cover so many subjects and not even get mud on your tires! I just gave my reg cab F350 diesel to my son and now have a 4dr dually f350 diesel. You are 100% correct on parking and the 8ft bed. I have a gooseneck set up in my dually,too. Towing a heavy trailer with the dually is easier. Unless you tow 12K and more regularly a dually isn't neccessary. Windage is a bigger problem than weight. Duallys are very stable. I think you have made the best choice for your situation and I don't think NEW Casey and Johnny weigh much more than 8K together plus attachments. The new trailer should have side loading ramps so Casey can hop on and off without moving Johnny out of the way. I like to spend your money! Christy, just think of all the time, fuel, and wear and tear you will save not moving Johnny. See, I'm pullin' for you Tim! See you two on the next one!

I've pulled the load with my 2011 F150 Ecoboost, and with my F350 crew cab, diesel, dually. A world of difference in control and ease of towing with the F350. There are several canyons that I go through with high enough winds that there are calibrated wind socks showing the wind direction and you can tell the approximate velocity as the socks fully inflate at 15 knots. With the F150 in high winds, I could feel the trailer wagging the back end of the truck slightly - and I use an equalizing hitch. With the dually - you just cruise on and aren't even aware of the load.

Personally I think the one tons ride better than the 3/4 tons, they don't bounce quite so much.. For what you do in pulling the big trailer with multiple pieces of equipment, you have just the truck you need.. In my humble opinion.. lol

In 2003 I needed a new truck, knowing a one ton was not big enough. I bought a GMC 4500 with a 17,500 gvw. Then GM got out of that market in 08. They are now back in that class 5-6. My point is if you can afford it go for the higher gvw. And equip the truck as best you can.

I have cleared a 35 X 40 foot area for a pole garage (a foot deep for half of it) moved 25 tons of crushed rock, cleared out for a new porch and lifted and moved a lot of concrete pad, hauled topsoil, turned big compost mounds with it, built a crusher run road/berm at my camp, and lots of lumber hauling with mini clamp on mini forks. let me give you my opinion... I work on a drilling rig, and my company has tried them all. in my 30 years with the company, weve tried fords chevys and dodge. we carry a constant weight of fuel in the bed, 140 gallons on rough dirt roads. which is alot of weight. were not nice on the suspension either, going way over the speed limits, both going and coming home from work. the suspension on all of them is the weak point. brakes, tie rods etcetra. the trucks with the torsion bars are the weakest, but front coils are'nt far behind. Hoevever, the fords held up better, but we had major issues with the diesel engines. the small 6.2 liter engines gave us hardly any issues. but we drove them like we didnt OWN them! they were beat hard!

Not saying you made any mistakes on the truck. The 450 does have a better turning radius than the 350 if you want to go to a 450 ever. I have owned Dodge, Ford, and GMC and I fit better in one brand of the newer trucks but my older Ford and Dodge was as comfortable for me as the GMC with the more Cadillac like ride. So you may have a favorite brand but with the changes they have made you may find another brand more comfortable to get in and ride in.

The choice of a gear ratio is a big issue. We are converting our Kenworth W900L from three to four axles since we purchased a RGN trailed with four axles and a 55 ton load capacity. We had just redone the engine and front end (father in law is tough - don't cut corners). The axle ratio, if I remember correctly, is 3:15. Seems light but the truck will be fitted with an 18 speed HD transmission and a HD clutch. The CAT engine produces 2,080 lbs. of torque so we are just fine. We just go over the truck every 90 days and ask ourselves "What do we need to do?" To put the transmission in, for example, the carpet must be removed. This VERY labor intensive so the question is - should we replace it? No. There are no wear spots on it. But yes to the flywheel since it will be readily accessible. Diesel vs. gas: What is the break even mileage to make the diesel economical? The environmental control systems are expensive to maintain. Did you look at air springs? If so, do a video on it. BTW, there is some computer equipment that allows you to set your load over the center of gravity and measure the weight.
@TractorTimewithTim

brief look at air springs, but not much. everything i read said that they would not improve ride when empty. I wanted smoother 'empty ride'. ...so gave up. Gas vs. Diesel. I agree on payback, but...with the new heavier trailer, I think the additional torque has value as well. It would be a hard pull for the gas engine. The diesel has enough trouble with it. So far, happy with the 3:31's. we like going FAST on the interstate :-)

Depends upon the truck. The F450 has a smaller turning radius than an F350 because it has a wide front axle allowing the steering to turn more sharply than the F350.

Watch the fuel quality in that 6.7. Fuel with water will take out the whole fuel system and ford will not warranty that. Gasser is the way to go and diesels are dying cause the EPA is killing them. Ford is coming out with a new 7.3 gasser and the 6.8 V10 has already taken over the cab/chassis market. My Crew Cab F450 with service bed and 6k lb crane weighs in at about 14 k lbs by itself and then we still tow 14k around behind it. Won't set any land speed records but does a great job pulling the combo and takes almost no maintenance and no worries. And the best part is if it does blow up I can get a Reman long block gasser installed for the price of fuel system or DPF on a new diesel. That and diesels get the same mileage as the gassers now due to the emissions. Anyways just my 2 cents and hope the best for you.

Your friend at the weigh station will tell you that having a 1 ton for towing a trailer will get you to a combined gvwr over 26,000 lbs much quicker than a 3/4 ton. Just more headache at the scales when you are over 26,000 in many states.

Take it from a person that's pulled trailers for over 20 years, the diesel engine just doesn't break down so bad over the long haul, no punt intended, but a gas motor just breaks down and wears down, my truck for years sometimes isn't even unhooked from the trailer and the truck rolls everyday, I've went through gas engines 3 times as fast as I would a diesel, and I haven't ever wore out a diesel pulling so, it's not about power which is all nice, but about the motor over a long time that will last with a load compared to a gas engine no matter what the dealer says, I know it cause of experience, not what the brochures say, God bless

It really comes.down to how much weight you can stop towing a trailer. I have hauled 10k pounds.of landscape block with a half ton with a air ride lift kit. Stopping was a bit tricky though. Then again I don't have brakes on my trailer nor do I tow a tractor as much as you guys. Maybe next Tuesday talk about stopping power instead of tow power. Diesel engines are nice but when they break down expensive repair job. Just my 2cents.

That may be true from a practical standpoint. However, I’m concerned about the law. You cannot tow 10k payload with a 1/2 ton legally. Nor can you haul 10k payload without brakes legally...at least in Indiana. So, when purchasing a truck and trailer, I would suggest focusing on the law.

I learned to drive on a 51 Dodge that you had to herd down the road instead of drive. Years later I found tightening a bolt on the steering box would fix that. My favorite truck? A tiny Ford Courier that basically had the Pinto engine in it. Oddly, it was actually made by Mazda, except for the engine, that was another Japanese company. Some Ford Couriers actually had the Mazda engine in them. A few years later and Ford was making the Mazda trucks, really a rebadged Ford Ranger. I seriously looked at getting a Ranger, but the odd thing was, I couldn't get in it and drive it comfortably while I could the smaller courier. I also looked at a Chevy Colorado about that same time, but though it ran great, the build quality left me cold. They actually had a line of painted sealer across the end of the bed about a foot from where it ended. Painted sealer? There was no way that was going to last very long, so I didn't buy it. Frankly, I would not buy any new truck now, even if I had tons of money. They're all kind of junk plastic with just a little steel or aluminum in the mix. Way too much electronics, which will always have a problem with going bad and leaving you scratching your head as to what the heck is wrong. These days, I think most anyone would be better off buying a restored older truck, 50's 60's or 70's. You'd pay less up front, and have much lower maintenance costs down the road. Sure they don't have all the nambypamby creature features, back then trucks were for work. With what you saved on buying such a truck, you could add anything you wanted, retro air, tie down spots, lights like crazy, whatever you wanted your truck to be, and still not have the 60 to 70 thousand in it that most of today's larger trucks cost. That's just crazy, pay that much for something that's mostly plastic and electronics that you know will not last a good long time like they used to.

You talked about turning radius. Here's something to think about. The F450 has a smaller turning radius than the F350 because the front axle is wider allowing the steering knuckles to turn the wheels more sharply. So, if turning radius is a concern, step up to an even bigger truck. Ford used to offer the F350 with a wide front end option, but they discontinued that option, probably because people did not know it was available and / or didn't understand the benefit of the wider front axle and didn't order that option.

I’m a big supporter of getting the “lowest” gearing (highest number) available from the factory. I don’t drive cross country so the slight hit in highway fuel mileage is more than made up by the mechanical advantage and better fuel mileage you’ll get at speeds below 70mph, especially when towing and if you’re like me and put on larger and more aggressive tires and don’t want to regear the axles for the larger tires (been there, done that) recently for a personal truck the preowned truck I bought has the highest gearing (lowest number) gearing that was available and what that means is worse fuel mileage around town, less towing capacity, and now that I’ve put 2in larger tires on my fuel mileage took a noticeable hit and the truck lost a little pep. So I’ve told myself from now on if I buy a new truck I will only get the lowest gearing available.

I like your point of planning in the future. I eventually want to get a tractor, camper and boat. Long term plans. So I bought a 3500 single wheel crew cab 8'bed 4x4 gas. Since for the amount of towing I do now I could not justify even to myself to get a diesel with the added cost and not a huge improvement in mileage. It is also a kinda rare combo to find used by the way.
