Tracy McGrady. Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (Class of 2017). 7x NBA All-Star. 2x All-NBA First Team. 3x All-NBA Second Team. 2x All-NBA Third Team. 2x NBA Scoring Champion. The league’s Most Improved Player in 2001. Kobe Bryant called T-Mac the TOUGHEST guy he has ever played against. Paul Pierce said, “since there was no way to stop Tracy’s shot, you just had to do everything you could to make sure he didn’t get in a position to shoot.” Tracy himself probably said it best, he’s a versatile player, he can go inside, he can go outside, so “how do you want it?”
Range. Skill. Handle. Size. Power. Force. Most importantly: an indomitable will. T-Mac was never one to back away from a big game. He defied defenses with his dizzying and dynamic playmaking because, and he readily admitted this himself, he didn’t have a go-to move. You couldn’t plan for what he was going to do, because he didn’t have just A move, he had all of them.
To watch Tracy is to be envious of his talent, otherworldly as it seems. He can literally do everything on the court, and yet, his moves just build off of one another. It starts with one of the basics of basketball: his footwork is the foundation for his fantastical forays and it, like his range, just continues out from there. I wanted to make a highlight reel worthy of a Hall of Famer, but I noticed something will combing through as many hours of footage as I could find: his greatest highlights, his most powerful posters, were byproducts of his pump fake. His George Gervin/Julius Erving-esque finishes stemmed from his triple threat. His jab made it so he didn’t need his cross. He’s got a hell of a handle, but watch this video and you’ll see that a well-timed attack off the right read from a triple threat, or scissored feet and/or the attack off the catch can kill the defender cold. The beauty of his ability to blow by his guy is because, yes, he is athletic, but that’s not the only thing that let’s him do that. Watch this video and work on what he did; reads, and moves, and counters to those moves. The ability to go over either shoulder, off either foot, finish ambidextrously, goes a lot farther than just wishing you were born with what made McGrady great.
Jab Step. Pump Fake. Step through. Reverse Pivot. Dropstep. These don’t sound as sexy as the combos you string together WITH the basketball, but believe me when I tell you that the basics make the game, and the devil is in the details. It may seem boring to work on the little things every day, but excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better. Just look at what it did for T-Mac.

That's why I don't get why some people discredit Tmac. If he had the same privilege as Kobe Bryant in terms of longevity and health, he would be a Top 15 or even a Top 10 Player of All Time. He had the skill and drive to be it. But what he wouldn't be able to achieve is multiple championship, maybe 1 or 2 tops because him and Kobe are the premiere ball hogs of the decade.

Tmac got a slight case of scoliosis if i'm not mistaken and was projected to play 4-5years i think? (i forgot i saw a video of it here in youtube as well). so yeah he did great for what he was given and damn lasted a long time in the league even with such career ending injuries.

He could’ve possibly went down as the greatest scorer ever. He definitely is the most underrated. Too much talent is what you saw in T-Mac. Scoring without effort with such a sleepy demeanor. The cleverness, footwork, quickness, etc. it’s literally as if he never worked on his game. That’s how effortless he made it look. Plus he was well rounded offensively. He was a good passer too. If he played every NBA player 1v1, T-Mac wins 98% of those matches.

@kudabeen 6 жыл бұрын
Mid-range and one/two dribble in and out of the post was elite level killer moves...Carmelo made a living off T-Mac style quick post moves...That inside hard dribble spin back over either shoulder that can be a layup or if your strength and footwork are there a balanced fade away was crazy...Saw Mac embarrass a young all league defense Kobe with that one...not just once... He also had this move while in the post where he'd dribble hard behind the back under the defenders arm in his back, the defender would have to react and take a half step back...Mac is dribbling from from right to left, so as the defender is stepping back the left following the ball...Mac as the ball reaches his left hand quickly pivots off his right foot turning over his right shoulder for a WIDE open mid/close J...Cash. He had crazy ability...Durrant for as good as he is he isn't T-Mac with the move...KD add that foot work he'd average 30-35 easy, but he isn't as aggressive and now that he is on a team that doesn't need him to compete he really takes his foot off the gas... That is the crime of this "super team" stuff...we don't get to see the best players dig that much deeper for those huge 50, 60, 70pt performances or matchup battles as much...

Despite Kobe improving his jumper during his later years, I've always felt McGrady was the better jump shooter. Especially from beyond the arc. During '00-'05, T-Mac no doubt was the better shooter... but Kobe made up ground from '06 onwards... McGrady definitely was more athletically gifted than Kobe, but skill-wise Kobe still tops him. Evidenced by when T-Mac lost his explosiveness after '08 due to injuries... he just couldn't sustain his skills without his athleticism... Still a great player and deserving of the HOF
@toppa4504
@toppa4504 6 жыл бұрын
IbTusPeter Itd be hard to sustain anything with the injuries he was getting I mean I hear alot of people bring up other players that played throught their injuries but they gotta understand TMacs injuries were with him his whole NBA career and then he had very serious ones. If anyone knows about microfracture, basically its extremely rare to come back from microfracture surgery which he had when he was like only 29 i think. Plus the knee and shoulder injuries where he had to get fluids drained before and after his games. And back spasms put on top the normal pains an NBA season brings. People dont realise ALL these nagging and serious injuries combined with the situation and cards TMac was given, he straight balled.
@JLau910
@JLau910 5 жыл бұрын
For the most part agree with ya, but I think some credit should be given to tmac in the area you critiqued him. In his 2nd and 3rd primes (when he first played for the rockets and then towards the end in 08), Tmac reinvented his game ... building off of all the intangible ways to score from midrange and setting up his triple threat options (some of which are in this very video). His injuries didnt allow him the same explosiveness, but he still averaged around 25 after losing his insane first step AND after his crazy injuries. It was 2009 when he just couldn't do it anymore.

One of the least talked about parts of his game that is probably my favorite is his transition from right to left how effortless smoothly and quickly he makes a move going from right to left makes me wonder how someone can look so cool while also being so effective on the court. Whether he puts it between his legs or just going from the right to left hand crossover it’s just beautiful and then he blows past you or pulls up for a jumper

LJTK I've wanted to do Penny and CWebb highlights for forever, probably second only to a bunch of old school defense highlights (and real highlights, not just the blocks/steals reels I've been making recently). The dream is to also make a highlight for Hakeem and his footwork/moves, a GP lockdown, and a video showcasing Rodman's exceptional game, but I can only promise you I can try. This one was made possible thanks to the availability of other channels uploading on account of his HoF induction.

t-mac was honestly a really good example of great players having bad luck and "what ifs". IMO he should've never left vince because those two meshed really well together (it's not far fetched to suggest if they stayed together, they mightve gone to the finals at least once, because the east was so weak back then), got to orlando when grant hill could never consistently fully recover from his ankle, and then left orlando right when they drafted dwight howard, then played the back end of his prime with a constantly injured yao ming while constantly getting injured himself (he also played for jeff van gundy in houston, who was a terrible offensive coach). also (this one was sorta outta his control because he just played during the wrong era), the bball community didn't start to discuss proper landing mechanics to reduce injuries until recently, and because tmac never played with the knowledge of how to reduce that stress, he kept aggravating his lower back and knee injuries by landing awkwardly on his left foot after shooting.

Tmac is the flashiest, most stylish scorer in the game ever. I'd watch him play the Bobcats than the snake in a final

I'd asked if you were going to make a Demarcus Cousins Post Move video but I'll take my favorite player any day. Keep it up love the videos and detail you put into each.

Denton Francis I still am (though more realistically a point center video that features his post moves). It's just that when Hall calls and the NBA does him a disservice of only making a 5 minute long highlight reel, I have to do something about it.

Evin Gualberto I respect it. That is disrespect for someone who could of been top ten if he never was stopped by injuries and teammates what were injured, sigh. Love the videos though share them with my friends all the time.

1st play I already miss that style... nowadays that would have been a 3 point foul shot. Tmac says nah I dont need to jump into the defender in the air I'll just make the shot on this sidestep.

90% of the defenders on Tmac were the best defender on their team, Tmac seemed unbothered by anyone under 6'6 and more determined than anybody his height
