Hi everyone,
My name is Tracy and I garden in Zone 4/5 (maybe zone 5/6 judging by our last winter) in Toronto, Canada.
You are watching a video of How I Care for Roses & Clematis in my garden + a slow tour of my roses (and hydrangeas) in bloom filmed on June 20 & 22. 🌸🤩🌸. After this 1st flush, I will have to wait until August to see them bloom again. The 2nd flush of roses in July will be devoured by the Japanese beetles.🥺😢 I'm feeling very sad right now just thinking about the destruction by the Japanese beetles. The next time I see the roses in bloom again - may be near the end of August. However, the flush in August will only sparse and not nearly as prolific as now....so I will have to look back at this video in order to see them again.💐🪴💚
Hope you enjoy it and I cannot wait to update you on the hydrangeas (next in bloom) in the coming weeks.
Thank you so kindly for taking some of your precious time to watch my video.
Happy gardening & see you next time! 🪴💚

Ps. You may recognize that @ 16:15, one Eglantyne rose bud had some aphids on the stem. I missed it during the last soap insecticide spray as it was hidden underneath the canopy of the Limelight tree. I noticed it while editing the video last night…so I immediately went out and sprayed the darn thing down and now it’s all good! Thankful for getting to it before those aphids spread to all the other plants. 🙏🙏🙏

Tracy, great video. I surely learned another thing or two from your educational section of the video. Though I normally prune my roses to the first 5 leave, but have never really considered about the direction of the new growth, which I should have. Now I will. Thanks for that tip. Secondly, I will be more conscious when pruning a tall branch to where I want to cut it so that the entire bush looks more attractive as a whole. Thanks for that tip. Love your garden. I am going to borrow that idea of planting an ornamental grass next to salvia. It looks so soothen and please to the eyes. BTW, I am simply amazed how well you are able to maintain your garden while you are still working. I honestly thought you are a fulltime gardener. When I was working, I had no time for garden at all. I just picked up this hobby one year after I retired from my fulltime job. I find the gardening is such a wonderful rewarding experience mentally and physically. Thank God for His amazing Grace, my garden has grown very well and surely coming along. It still has a long way to go for what I have envisioned, but have made a huge progress in one year. Learned a lot from many awesome gardeners like yourself. Best wishes and happy gardening!

Thank you so much Ting! I’m so glad you found the tips useful. 💚🪴💚 Gardening has always been something I truly love - I have created a number of gardens at the various homes we have lived in. I don’t think I can do without my gardens. I have always somehow find time to garden - even when the children were infants. I remember the times when I would bring the baby monitor outside to garden while they were sleeping. 😊 Now, working from home - I’m so thankful for having a garden to be in while working from home. I will definitely miss it when I have to go back to work in-person. Happy gardening! 🙏💚🙏

Thank you so much for your lovely comment! 🥰 I look forward to every new bloom in the garden. It’s where I spend my morning coffee and day (while working from home due to the lockdown). I’m so thankful for having the garden space to spend my entire day in….I cannot think of any where else I would rather spend the entire day in…when my eyes get tired from looking at the computer screen, I would take a few minutes break to walk over and take a waft at the roses and feel instantly better. It does a wonderful trick on the brain…for me at least. 🥰 Especially now when the roses are blooming…and the scent on the roses - it’s heaven! 🙏💚🪴

I adore your gardens soooooo much! I sowed white alyssum this year. I told my husband I like the glittery effect to my compositions but ewww not a fan of the scent they put off. 😁🤦🏻‍♀️ It's subtle enough that it won't prevent me from planting again.
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Roxanne! Loc’s (my husband) fav annual is the white alyssum because of the glittery effect the dense blooms have on the light at night and under the sunlight during the day as well. It seems as if we have the same liking for alyssum. I think this is the first time I noticed the scent on the Royal Carpet alyssum. Probably because we have always planted alyssum in the ground and not in the planters like this year so I never noticed the scent until now? The children seem to think the scent is okay…maybe it’s just me? 😊. Perhaps it’s the combined scent - mixed with the strong scent from the DA roses that makes it unappealing? I know I have always love the scent from the roses so I will definitely have to wait until the DA are done blooming to tell. Also, I will also have to take a waft of the white alyssum to compare. Happy gardening!

@TracysHomeGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vinitha, I have overwintered panicle hydrangeas in single-walled pots before and they survive but with a lot of die back. So now I have them in double walled planters/pots so there should be less die back. With bushes I don’t mind them coming back from the ground up; however with the standard/trees, I want to make sure the canopy survives so double walled pots is needed for better winter protection. I ran out of garden space so I’m looking into more planters for more plants too. Happy gardening Vinitha! 🙏🪴💚

@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Rose. 🙏💚🪴 At planting, did you plant it with a lot of compost mixed into the native soil? Did you feed it with a slow release fertilizer like Rose Food (or Rose Tone) in the spring? Is the clematis putting on a lot of foliage but no blooms? If yes then - Is it close to the lawn where some lawn fertilizer may come in contact with the clematis? Too much lawn fertilizer will encourage the clematis to produce foliage and not blooms. Do you have deer problems? Some of my clematis and hydrangeas blooms (at the front garden) were seen nibbled by deers every now and then.

I love your garden, Tracy. Thank you for sharing how to care for roses and clematis. Do you use drip system in your yard? If so how long do you set it for?
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nilda, I water everything by hand about 2-3 times a week. Drip system would work but it’s very difficult to maintain in our Canadian climate as a result of the drastic changes in temperatures - rubber drip tubings don’t tend to last long for us. If you have drip system set up - I would use 2 to 3 2-gallon/hour emitters per rose….hydrangea and clematis may need 3-4 emitters per plant and I would set it to run for at least 30 mins during the hottest summer days for 2-3 days per week. Keep a close eyes on the plants and check the top 2-3” of soil to make sure that it’s dried in between watering. Ps. I’m giving you my estimated amounts based on what I would do if it was in our garden zone. Thank you & Happy gardening! 🙏💚🪴

Hi Victor, With Sheridan, DA roses sell out very quickly in early spring (within a few days when they put them out). The best way is to order them in the winter and Sheridan will have them for you. Other nurseries that have them are Vandermeer in Ajax (still some left when I was there a few days ago) and Valleyview in Markham….this one I haven’t visited since May so you should call to make sure they have some in stock. @@TracysHomeGarden Surrey BC (Vancouver areas) has high humidity. I used to live in Massachusetts for a year and they have the same humidity as here but only for the summer months. Here 55-60% is consider low. 80-98% is pretty much normal year round. This year is bit unusual cold for us though still around 8-10 degrees throughout the night into early morning (4/5am)

Vancouver has warmer winter but definitely humid 80-98%…its definitely much more humid than Toronto. No wonder aphids are widespread. 💚💚💚

@@TracysHomeGarden this year it's not bad on the daises. This time last last it was completely infested. I pinched 3 bubs today and 1 yesterday. Last year every single Daisey and stems are completely drench with the darn thing. 1 floribunda rose has aphids and the other so only have black spots. 🙈🤦‍♀️

Could you please tell which your clematis can bloom for a long time,my clematis can only bloom for 2 weeks
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden 3 жыл бұрын
The three longest blooming clematis I have had personal experience with in the past are - Saphire Indigo, Durandii & Arabella. They are all blue/purple in colour and are non-vining or herbaceous clematis…meaning they are non-twining so they need to be staked up and held by clips or allowed to grow like a shrub or ground cover. They bloom all season long they are very beautiful!

It may be in too much sun. Move the pot to some shade in the afternoon and it should get better.

How old is you garden?
@TracysHomeGarden

The garden is about 4 years old Michael. Some of the plants are 4 years old - many plants are 2-3 years old, especially those that I divided. I started the garden with 1 of each type of plant and have divided them to get more. 🙏💚🪴
