All in all I think you did pretty good, it's all trial and error for sure, it would've been nice to get some fry from that orange and black female but I'm sure you will get some next year, it looks like you got enough fry to keep you busy any more and you would be going crazy like me Lol, i'm always doing water changes, feeding 3x a day, culling all the time but it's all worth it if you can better the health and looks of your fish, now to grow them out, I enjoyed the video Chris, full watch.

Amy, doing some water changes in the barrels today. It's a little harder outside cuz you really can't see them only in certain times in the morning when the light hits up. Just right. I think the water changes would really help my development in size my fish now. Mind you I did move a bunch of the fry today into that 300 gallon IBC tank. I still have four barrels going with fry in them and one small breeder pond with fry in them so I probably have enough hahaha
@shubunkin.goldfishtank
@shubunkin.goldfishtank Ай бұрын
I use the micron filter from my magnum filter and attach it to the end of a garden hose and siphon water out of my fry tanks with it, never sucks up any fish because the surface area is so big and fine, that what I've learned when you think you don't have enough fry and then they grow a little and there is always way more than you think Lol

Interesting video Chris. Although not a big shubunkin fan (as you know) my favourites are the darker blue/black ones but I really do like the large red and black female. To bad she didn't spawn for you. That said you do have a lot of fry to go through so I'm sure you'll get some nice looking fish when all is said and done. 👍🏻🐟🐠

@stubbsaquatics6080 Ай бұрын
Thanks a lot Ken. I may try to spawn her again but time is not on my side right now. I too like the black and blue variety the most but wanted to introduce a stronger red. I hope you're back starts to ease up. I've been going to physio and massage therapy for my shoulder which has been out for. I don't know how long I've had x-ray and an ultrasound but all I can find so far is arthritis but that shouldn't cause as much pain and weakness as it has but they're still looking at it. PS. I still can't wait. See what Goldfish you get?

@@stubbsaquatics6080 Getting old and the pain that comes with it sucks. My back wasn't too bad today until I decided to cut the grass in the backyard. Normally a 30 minute job took over 1.5 hours including multiple rest breaks to allow the pain to subside in between every 2 or 3 rows of grass cut. Hope your shoulder gets sorted soon for you.

Thanks so much for commenting. I have years ago with fantails but I haven't with shubunkin as releasing the eggs is easily done but I find the milt with the males tends to be more difficult.. but it could be just the way I do it

I had a female I really wanted to get to spawn, and was frustrated she wouldn't spawn, so I finally took her out of the tub after she was getting beat up by the males. I tried her again and again after a couple of weeks rest between, and finally got a huge spawn out of her with three males. Then about 3 weeks later she had another large spawn with a single different male. I guess she just wasn't physically ready at first. Each spawn I had this year did happen on the morning of the third day from when I put them together. Where did you find that netting you cover your tubs with? What is it called? I need some.
@stubbsaquatics6080
@stubbsaquatics6080 Ай бұрын
Hi Tare You are so correct. You really have to do it in their time . I may do one more attempt with that one female. If there is enough time left. Such a short growing season Thanks so much for your kindness and support. I truly appreciate it. As for the covers I use I picked up a used swimming pool net cover and cut them up to fit certain ponds. They are cheap to buy and hold up pretty good
@tarewade9681
@tarewade9681 Ай бұрын
@@stubbsaquatics6080 Thanks Chris, I found those net pool covers on ebay, just what I need. I'm going to put it to the exact same use as you did. I use 1/2 barrels and IBC totes just like you for spawning and grow outs for fry. I also use sponge filters in them, and lots of plants. I discovered that the fry did much better with the plants in the tubs. I had put a gob of hornwort in a tub that had my most recent spawn, and it made a huge difference in the growth and survival of the fry. The tub is indoors with a daylight 5000k led over it, and the hornwort grew like mad. I put hornwort in a tub outdoors in full sunlight, and what a mess, it melted and I had to remove it. I'm going to try something else, maybe duckweed or some other floater for outside. Or, maybe the hornwort would work outside if in the shade. I'm thinking the plants absorb ammonia from the fish waste and excess food very quick, resulting in greatly improve water quality. Doing all those water changes is getting old. The steamed eggs I use is great fry food, and cheap, but it sure can foul the water quick if I'm not careful.
@stubbsaquatics6080

@@tarewade9681 It sounds like we have very similar systems. I would love to see what you've got. Yeah my fry I keep with plants. They do so much better, especially. You know there's hiding spots and helps control the temperature I'm glad you were able to find that and it helped Yeah like I said before I would love to see your setups. And thanks so much for getting back to me and letting me know. I appreciate it. You take care and have yourself a great weekend
