Great and informative video, Chris! I like them both, but I think with all the requirements for koi, if I had to pick one, it would be shubunkins-- particularly your line, those are SO pretty! I read somewhere that the longest living domestic fish was a 300 yr old koi, don't know if that's true though, lol. Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂👍

Thanks, Tara, by the way, happy birthday! Hope you had a great day. I really appreciate the compliment. Yeah I've heard that there's some fish that has lived at 300 years but they haven't been able to prove that but you never know. 100 years I've heard of but like I said the average can live up to both 30 35 years. Most live to 15 to 20 and that's pretty long

@@stubbsaquatics6080 thank you for the birthday wishes! It would be difficult (if not impossible?) to prove a fish lived that long, but it's a fun story I suppose 🙂. 30-35 is still quite a lifespan!

Great video. I too think they're both beautiful. I think the Shubunkin are far easier to take care of, plus their color patterns, and varieties are far more random. They sure are not cookie cutter fish, like most Koi are.

Thanks so much for watching. They really are easier to look after. They are beautiful Hardy. I wish they lived as long as koi. And even got as big as them. That would be nice or I wish Kauai were as hardy as them.. be nice to have the best of both

Both fish are beautiful but it all depends if you can meet the needs of the fish, for any size pond shubunkin will do fine but for koi you need to have a lot bigger pond for them, nice information Chris!

Hi Chris! I hands down prefer Shubunkin goldfish!! I love the look of them and all their amazing designs/colors. My husband likes koi but we don't want to pay a bunch of $ for koi so we get them when they are super young and they all change their colors on us leaving us with something we weren't expecting. Plus, our koi are always reproducing, so we will have to cut down on their population soon. Oh, not to mention they are aggressive when we feed the fish, and it always looks like they bully our goldfish. I love them both but prefer goldfish.
@stubbsaquatics6080

Depending on the type of koi, they certainly do lose their colors. Several mine have lost colors and that's typical with certain breeds and with age apparently it's like hair lol I really like both. I just wish koi where is Hardy as goldfish.. and I wish the goldfish were as friendly and grew as big as the koi. Thanks again my friend

my fish club had a talk by a well know koi judge.. it was so interesting to learn about these fish. but there is no way to have enough water to allow them to live a great life. now i have started a shubunkin collection this year. i hope to expand my tub ponds next season. i also love the orandas, and other fancy goldfish....i don't like that i can't se4e all their beauty in the black tubs. maybe one day a diy glass front outdoor pond. as we have so many water mocassins, etc here...i insist the ponds be above ground level....but i do love looking at others beautiful designed ponds. thanks for the vids on all of these.

No water moccasins this far north. There are plenty of water snakes but they would not normally come to a backyard pond. Garder snakes yes... I understand the need for raised ponds your way...mine have to be inground otherwise they get too cold. I look forward to seeing what all you do. Thanks again my friend

Koi are living jewels They certainly get huge and live a long time providing you can keep them healthy and that's the hard thing . the goldfish are a little bit easier but don't have the same coloring and patterning for the most part and definitely don't get as big or live as long

Great topic and very informative especially for someone thinking about starting a pond. I personally prefer koi but like you mentioned they need room and the water depth is important for our Canadian winters. When I had my pond I did only stock goldfish for the reason mentioned above but regardless they are wonderful fish and I still have two of them in my tank that were originally in my pond over 10 years ago now. Have a great weekend Chris 👊🍻

I truly love koi... They are true jewels... Just wish they were hardier... They are like a fancy breed of dog that gets sick very easily... When a mutt is just healthier .. Breeders are actually breeding koi back with carp to strengthen the breed.. Now I do like my shubunkin.. just wish they would grow and act more like koi lol

Hi Chris! I think it is difficult to choose which is better if one is fond of ponds and cold water fish would like to have both Koi and Shubunkin carp. Although as you said, the management of Koi carp requires greater investment and space as well as experience and a certain culture on the subject since they are also very expensive and long-lived fish. Good weekend.

@stubbsaquatics6080 Hey, I had emailed when we started this journey and appreciate all that we have learned from you. We are north of Edmonton. So far they are all coming in. But there is a plan for a much deeper, bigger pond, so we will see. Found those baby Bristol Shubunkin by chance at Big Al's. We do not expect show quality, but they are healthy and doing well. We don't have a breeder out this way. Best of luck with your fish. And yes, the dogs are a big part of our life's 🙂

@stubbsaquatics6080 Well don't imagine they are high quality. But even if they are regular Shubunkin, it's okay. But one day will be nice to have one or two really nice Bristol once as well, lol.
