Trader Joe's is sabotaging negotiations with workers at two unionized stores. The company refuses to bargain on anti-discrimination protections, better wages, and much more. Trader Joe’s workers took us inside their fight for a contract with the “progressive” company.

trader joe's has always been stringently anti-union, but when i worked there a decade ago, in california, i was well paid with good benefits. by the time i quit, they were already cutting benefits and hiring people at lower wages and giving significantly smaller raises while also piling on more expectations and more ways to lose your raise. it's a bummer because it was legit the most fun job i ever had before they went corporate.

I am/was a huge supporter of Trader Joe’s- I love their foods, love their employees and love just about everything about them. I bought thousands of dollars of gift cards for people over the years and probably spent tens of thousands in their stores from Boston to LA. I go way out of my way to shop there. It was my understanding that the employees got good wages and benefits. If that is not the case, I’m out. Solidarity with the workers who literally create all the wealth in this country.

They used to pay very well comparatively. I started in 2007 in Connecticut and was paid $11 an hour when I first got hired and had no experience in grocery at all! Back then minimum wage was I believe 6.55 so that was a huge difference. Plus we had amazing benefits. Over the years I see the culture shift and they got rid of positions and started hiring people at lower and lower wages. They got rid of benefits made it so part time workers didn't get insurance. Cut hours of people who were lifers that were making cap(at the time it was $19.75 an hour for non management) And now the new CEO is having the company sue the national labor relations board calling unions unconstitutional. Some stores still have wonderful management but a lot now have managers that are megalomaniacs who power trip and play favorites and belittle ones they don't like to try and bully them into quitting. Trader Joe's is easily Turing into one of the worst companies to work for in retail but they dress themselves up as a fun friendly neighborhood market. WAL-MART also was once known to be an amazing place to work until the early 2000s then it turned to crap with poor management from the people who run the executives who run the company. Now it is on the fortune 100 list of best companies to work for ONLY because the executives listened to the employees about their concerns, reinstated and made better benefits and pay. It makes a huge difference. Trader Joe's culture has been gutted and it needs to be refreshed before their shiny appearance blows up in their face and its too late. They aren't a mega store like WAL-MART that's almost a necessity for some people so it would be harder to rebuild their image. It all comes down to greedy corporate executives. They are a multi billion dollar privately owned corporation, they can afford to pay fair wages. They did it before with prior CEOs they can do it now.

From a customer perspective, this same management is destroying what made Trader Joe's a success in the first place. I discovered this really cool store that had all kinds of things that I liked, often things I learned that I like, that were real food, well made/prepared, for a decent price in '91 and shopped there almost exclusively (I drink coca-cola products) for the next 20+ years in every state I lived in. Today, I buy coffee beans, some cheese, and a couple of sauces. The crews are not the happy people who were always ready with a recommendation or a helping hand and I can tell that they are overworked and stressed out most commonly over their schedule, even though they keep the happy facade up.

@@greeleyestateslove it's not the GOP exclusively. Democrats have been extremely anti union since the 60s as well. Don't go blaming one "side" when the reality is that everyone in government is paid off by big business to do their bidding. There ain't a single person in DC working on behalf of real working people. They're all suits, getting paid to represent other suits. Don't let the mainstream media fool you, this is not a DNC v. United we bargain, divided we beg. The way I see it, unionization is not nearly enough. Workers need to own the companies they work for. Every business needs to become a worker owned cooperative. All you small private business owners can still start your businesses but you'll have to work even harder to keep your jobs if your employees can essentially vote you out and replace you much more easily.

This is a tactic I've heard of other companies using. Step 1: corporation insists on NO discussion of wages or benefits at the first meeting. Step 2: say to all the stores "The Union made no proposals regarding wages and benefits." So that's your reward for presenting your requests in the order the company's lawyers want you to? This is evil.

Similar to recent Star Bucks negotiating situation and misinformation. SBU presented initial proposals to address the need for clean uniforms and non-slip shoes. Star Bucks management then proclaims to its workforce-at-large and their customer that SBU didn't even raise issue of wages and benefits. Usually, negotiations begin with non-economic issues, especially those which workers feel more optimistic about reaching a tentative agreement. Like Star Bucks, Trader Joe's is just stalling negotiations in an attempt to wait-out and demoralize SBU.

How do you guys feel about the gender discrimination demands? I think it might bring in workers who care about social issues, but could dissuade conservative workers from joining. I personally think workers should be protected from discrimination and should be able to identify their gender to feel more comfortable, but I haven't considered it as a vital union demand. I think of the US as being falsely divided into democrat and republican, when it is really workers and owners. Therefore, although culturally very different, workers from conservative and liberal states have the same problems and should try to work together, even if one calls themself a liberal and another himself MAGA

@@derek20la exploits them by keeping them under a living wage. Not giving them hours to go to full time so they don’t have to provide benefits. Terrible work hours and expectations thrown on employees. You don’t really understand how the world works do you? There’s many communities where Walmart has completely destroyed the local economy and small businesses by pricing right under them. Therefore, many people living in those communities have nowhere else to work EXCEPT Walmart. No one WANTS to work at Walmart, they do so so they can barely live and get by. “If you don’t like it get another job” is such a lame excuse. There shouldn’t be this connotation that exploitation is allowed because there are other jobs available. We’re about to enter a recession, what if there aren’t? What if there are no other jobs in the community that they would be eligible for. There is an inherent risk with getting a different job if you’ve been with a company for a time. If you have people that you’re supporting or you have no savings of your own, why would you take that risk? Even if there is a chance at a much better wage, if one thing goes wrong you can be on the street. Starting a business? Do you even understand the upfront costs of this? How can you start a business when you’re barely able to make rent and feed yourself on $7.25 an hour? You people are so ridiculously tone deaf it’s unbelievable. It’s not “suiting your whims” it’s providing employees with fair compensation and benefits. You act like that’s unreasonable, like it’s such a big deal to ask for such when these same corporations provided wages that allowed boomers in the 70s to buy homes and support a family of 3 working at a gas station. You conservative idiots will tout about it being their responsibility right up until you’re in the gutter, then you shout and complain about how unfair life is. You have 0 compassion, 0 empathy for other peoples situations and circumstances. Workers don’t deserve to be exploited and people should feel a moral obligation to support those who don’t monetarily.
