Shooting lighter bows magnifies the need for proper arrow release. If one can shoot heavier bows accurately, their heavy string tension can reduce the effect of the less than stellar release. Thanks for all the good info.

True until the shooter gets used to that heavier bow weight. Then it becomes normal and the gremlins show themselves.

I've been shooting Bows for 45 plus years now and just learned something from you Sir that I hadn't paid attention to and now know I should of. Thanks I'm going to practice that info. I totally agree on how a longer bow is so much more forgiving. I've shot hand made short 42" sinew backed Indian style Bows that stacked and were hard to shoot accurately, and then 72" pyramid style self bows that seemed to shoot by themselves !!

Thank you for making this video. I my opinion there is little content on the net that deals with shooting the Hill style bows. Your videos have helped me in many ways especially in deer hunting and shooting my Hill style bow. I am a subscriber to your online course and it has been a huge benefit to me not having a mentor showing me how to hunt or shoot the Hill style bow. Most video do not go in depth on the how's and why as your videos describe. I have been struggling with the arrow hitting the shelf for awhile unable to figure it out until this video. Too much pressure on the ring finger was the issue and thanks to you the problem is solved. Thank you again for your efforts and all the information that you pass alone . One thing I know is that you will never know just how many people you help with the videos that you produce. Thank You.

this is educational and I know my mistake with my recurve is the bow moving but is the whole bow they used a slick satin finish so I finally ordered off Amazon some more clear then not, (to see the cool finish below) no slip waterproof tape type used for showers, baths, boats, and the like. The No clear no slip tape uses an outdoor waterproof gaffer tape like glue, a strong acrylic glue to hold it on so when removed it leaves no residue or at least company claims to. Not that I would remove the tape if it works on the bow. I intend to use this for the grip section of my bow. stopping just before the fiberglass as that part with the satin finish is not really slick unlike the wood and thin micarta strip portions of the bow.

@@SamkoTradBow I did not forgot about that but thought that would not work well nor would a cloth sports tape with outer end glued down for they block the material from being seen at all. I did find a opaque to clear indoor outdoor waterproof shower/pool type barefoot comfortable Grip tape since I wanted the material behind the bow to be seen as much as possible as it is that cool of a bow. If the tape is too thick like more then duck tape or Electrical tape think then I will not use it and to think of another solution to the smooth grip like maybe getting a glue stick and letting the glue dry in that grip spot or using a thin thin layer of super glue. If the other ideas do not work I will see if I can get some tape on it and remove it after a week or so leaving a residue on the bow that with cleaning using a mild soap/dish soap could be easily removed. If I had a standard Bear Archery Grizzly or something like that, then maybe I would have tried to use an innertube or similar thing. Tape should be here by Monday.

Great video. I have these problems sometimes shooting compound. With the let off that I need because of my shoulder, it compounds the problem even more. Started shooting with 2 fingers and seems to be improving. It happens quite a bit if I'm at full draw for awhile on a deer then releasing. I'll definitely work on this more during the off-season

It's interesting because you here from a lot of good sources that recurve and r/d longbows are more forgiving and less critical to shoot the an ASL.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 2 жыл бұрын
I find the asl to be the most forgiving bow style I have ever shot. Have not met an asl shoot that would not agree with that. Even Howard Hill said that. But just because it's more forgiving doesn't mean it's easier to shoot or will make someone a better shooter. That's why we have so many fantastic bow styles and options out there. And none of them are better or worse than another. But for me. I will never go back to a recurve or a rd bow. Asl only for me as I shoot them better than anything else.

If I want to train myself to go from a decent release to a *perfectly* clean release, I might want the most unforgiving setup possible. What type of setup will magnify every small imperfection?

I shoot a 60lbs on mission compound bow and I tried shooting a trad bow at the archery shop and was really difficult for me . Lots of respect hunters with traditional bowhunters. How long did it Take you to pull back traditional bow and good at it I am 50yrs old.
@SamkoTradBow

You don't need that much weight. A 45 pound trad bow will kill everything in the country. Once you get a bow and shoot it a bit to acclimate those muscles the accuracy will come quickly for 20 yards and under.

Nice video Jason. My biggest problem is always too much pressure on my bottom finger and torquing my bow hand. It is something I have to constantly work on. My fingers just don't line up well and it's very hard for me to get even pressure across the three fingers.

Im always asking accomplished trad hunters what kind of accuracy they expect out of their gear. How accurate are you personally at 20 yards? How many inches would your group be. I have been shooting for years and havent been able to consistently group better than 5-6" groups at 20 yards.. of course every now and again i get some magic groups within a couple inches, but 30 yards i fall apart and im grouping more like 12-15inches. I get all sorts of different answers from people but i like to see what REAL people are normally achieving. Anyone care to chime in?

@@SamkoTradBow yeah the internet is full of historical misconceptions about pactical accuracy. Its really nice when successfull hunters give honest numbers about their efective range. When i read Howard hill's book hunting the hard way i was utterly blown away by some of the shots he claimed to hit. That book really made me feel like i just "didn't have it". No doubt some men are the exception to the rule, but i think the average person just doesn't realize a REAL bow it's ultimately a close range weapon.

With my 60 inch fiberglass longbow flatbow, an Actionbow 8200 by Actionrod anywhere from 1961--1979 when made as all were identical in production with logos/placement and ugly green color, I cant the bow same amount as you maybe a tick less when shooting it due to being a duel sided bow not cut to center or nearly but using a straight handle grip on the bow. The is unlike like my hunting recurve being nearly center cut if not center cut so I can be more upright with about a 15 degree cant that I use the a slightly modified of the Hill Grip mainly to fit the grip of the bow with the thumb and that part of the hand with fingers more using the fingers in the flat grip style. Now my longbow flatbow that it is not my hunting bow due to being only 36 pounds that I max to 34--35 pounds on normally is not enough for ethical Deer & Turkey on up hunting considering it has to use a Dacron B-55 string and is slow FPS already due to being all Fiberglass but for potentially small game and some more open area shore Bow Fishing I might use but anyhow it was the bow I used to get to my target weight and bow type of 45 pounds I pull 35--36 pounds on but is much faster of a bow for hunting due to using a Fast Flight string, being a recurve bow that is also laminate, and its is a short bow for current recurves at 54 inches with only the Bear Supermag at 48 inches being the only current higher production bow that is smaller.
