Nothing beats a good scone and enjoyed still warm from the oven with butter and jam, it’s one of life’s finer pleasures. This recipe works a treat and can be adapted with whatever flavour combinations you fancy or simply stick to the classic.
Ingredients (US & METRIC):
500g/ 4 cups self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting
120g / 1 stick butter, chilled
1 tsp baking powder
250ml/ 1 cup milk, plus extra for brushing
1 large free-range egg
100g/ ½ cup currants
3 tbsp sugar
To serve:
Jam
Butter

Thanks for showing these! In America scones are triangle sweet pastries with icing. These Irish scones are what my grandmother from western Ireland taught her daughters. I grew up eating these with butter and jelly only they had raisins instead of currants. Miss my aunts and their wonderful baking. Happy St Patrick's Day

Yea no English tea scones- we want the real Irish style flutted scones. Great tip on rubbing between the fingers to get the little “knobs” of butter. “Butter and jam is your only man” lol I pronounce them The way you do. I Cuban so I never grew up eating scones as a child- but when I lived in Chicago we had them with whipped cream jam and butter-

Once I ate scones in Oxford when I was a tourist there and it was so delicious! I felt in love with Oxford, London but most of all: Edinburgh! So I'm going to try to make these and the wild garlic scones from your Channel for my mom for the "Mother Day"! I am sure, it'll be the best gift! Thank you for your work, I am really enjoying watching your videos!

But yours look so delicious, I am going to make these just as you made them - definitely with me sugar on top! Scone rhymes with con, at least here in Scotland. Must give these a go though, any time I've made them before I've overworked the dough and essentially ended up with biscuits. Butter, jam and optionally cream is usual here, in that order.

I love this. I also absolutely love that you did everything with your hands like my mom used to. My mom was born and raised in Ireland and she and her sisters came over to America when they were 18 in 1953. she passed when I was 19. I'm adopted but I was raised Irish/Italian so seeing homemade scones makes my mouth water and my heart hurt. Do you ever use caraway seeds? How much would you add for this?
