I really like the way you add a load of small items to the kits that you find somewhat lacking -I believe that everyone should personalise their gear - more varied stuff means you can pool your gear if you are not alone in a survival situation.
@jamesr.92393 жыл бұрын
We were building DIY survival kits that would fit in the metal Band-aid boxes prevalent in the 60's (no plastic ones in those days) and filling them with items suggested by a local Desert- Alpine rescue organization. They had pretty much the same items as these seem to have but we had the choice of the quality of the items we stuffed in those boxes. These ready to use kits are a time saver , but choose wisely as your life may depend on it.

I brought one of these some time ago. I believe the general intention is that you use the razor blade with the firesteel. The absolute first thing I did was mix some petroleum jelly into those cotton balls. Then I added a mini Bic lighter, a zip lock bag & some puri-tabs. I didn't replace the whistle. Yes, it takes up a lot of space, but it's a SOLAS whistle, which means it can be heard a very long way away. I binned the sewing kit, it's a joke. The candle was wrapped in some tin foil. I kept the fishing kit, but added more line. Didn't add an extra blade, as I always have a Swiss Army Knife on me. Personally I wouldn't put cordage inside it. I'd either wrap 550 cord around it, or tape/ ranger it to the case. Last thing I did was tape a couple of square meters of aluminium foil and a generic medical space blanket to the lid. Not the World's Ultimate Survival Kit, but good enough for a couple of days to a week. Incidentally I have found that the fire steel is remarkably good for its size. Worked quite nicely with the saw on my SAK. One thing I established about the case is that they are indeed water resistant, provided you don't overload them. Which is why I was fairly conservative about my additions & alterations.

You can use the side of the single-edge razor blade, up toward the stiffener brace, as the striker for the ferro rod.

Honestly, having a button (2) IS a good thing to have. On more than one occasion me or a friend had the button on their PANTS fall off at a very inopportune time. I was able to whip out a button and sew on a replacement immediately. I ,and the friends that I helped, were very grateful I happened to have the 'tools' . Once I had to use a pin and I can tell you, it turned out painful and bloody. Lol. Just saying. ✌oh and thank you for saving us $13 for a $3 kit.
@josephs88293 жыл бұрын
Wow you are too kind calling it mediocre , not having all the items stated in the contents alone is a fail . No striker for the ferro rod and this kit fails miserably . Thanks for the review and I enjoy your videos!

You should consider putting together a "kitbashed" Amazon store or public list of personal recommendations as well as items you've reviewed on your channel. It would be interesting and a huge help for a novice who's interested in building their own kit or looking to expand and improve what kits they do have. It's just a thought.

@raykiii3 жыл бұрын
Eric, that was a nice upgrade. I would much rather have the kit you made than the original kit. The only change I think I would make is to add a spool of dental floss. I use the floss to make a shelter from the blanket. The 100 pound test line would make a great ridge line and pebbles and the floss would tie down a side of the blanket for a lean to. Put a fire in front of that and you are sure to make the night. What do you think? Thank you for sharing.

I like how you displayed the many variants that are on the market. I also like how you swapped out the kit with items more “practical “. But I also feel or in my opinion, when is a mini/micro survival kit just too small to be WAF. It’s more Logical To carry items with you based on your day and travel/work duties. So being somewhat prepared is the best decision.

I really enjoy watching these Survival Kit videos. Every once in a while there will be something I’ve never seen before. Not here of course, but sometimes. 😉 😎 I suppose you could use the side of the razor blade to strike the ferro. I like the cheap little ‘water resistant’ boxes for organizing small pieces of kit. If I’m concerned about the contents getting wet, I’ll just put it in a zip-lock bag.

@nickdrew18593 жыл бұрын
You probably could get a little more in there if you used some key rings and cobra stitched the rope you could attach them to the outside on the little "keychain" hole then you maybe could fit a small amount of aluminum foil, a few sheets of paper' and a small amount of duct tape. I would also suggest that how you put something like a jolly rancher into kits maybe if you could get the mre drink powder (I call it government Gatorade) or Gatorade makes little chewy candies both give sugar and electrolytes but take up more space.

Yeah that was pretty bad. Those little boxes you can find on Amazon 2 for like $7. They're not horrible, they come with a seal and some egg crate foam. My compass fits perfect in one of them. They're not for heavy use and I don't think the latches would stand up but if you're just using it to store something in the bottom of your pack they're fine.

OK, here's a poll. Your life depends on using a snare to catch your food. Do you know how or where to start? I had to use one in SERE school, I lost about 10 lbs. Why waste the space for essentially a useless item? PS, people in the know carry a pack of MRE peanut butter for bait. Hit like for don't know how to use, dislike for knowing how to use.

You make a valid point. I’d say make your kit to 1, suit your location and 2, intended purpose. Now 2 isn’t as obvious...reasons? Well if you’re military and likely to be in places interesting then that’s going to have radically different needs to an old fat git shopkeeper and postmaster in north wales. I’m pretty sure there are no zombie apocalypses any time soon and if it’s asteroid time then we’re done anyway. So regarding point 1 I’m in north Western Europe at any point just a few miles from civilisation so do I REALLY need a snare wire? Err no do I need a fishing kit? Err again no, plus might get prosecuted for poaching without a fishing licence. However, I do need fluids and I do need shelter and warmth, plus I might need medical kit. So my survival kit is Mylar blanket/shelter, a good poncho, water bag, whistle, puritabs, several ways to start a fire (bic, storm matches, ferro rod, etc), some tinder, plasters, bandage, my meds, some painkillers (if only to get a Judas Priest ref in), a darn good tin to keep it all in, plus I always have my wallet, van keychain and leatherman on me. If I was in a desert region doubtless I’d have some water packs and other stuff too.

@@christhorpejunction8982 Hello good sir! I spent a lot of time in Scotland (Kinloss), and have many great memories from that part of the world. My favorite memory (sort of) is of a friendly bar keep during a slow night taught me all about scotch by setting up a scotch tasting lesson for me. It lasted several hours (I think ) and by all accounts was quite the event! To this day, it is the only hard liquor I drink. I totally agree with you. My confusion is that all of these kits seem to contain a method of obtaining food for which virtually nobody has either the skill or knowledge on how to use. To be quite honest, I would probably have greater luck using a club or rock than using a snare. I hope all is well with you and yours during these trying times. With love from the US.
