Compared to Nathan's old dodge (I think it had a Pirate flag), this was pretty impressive. I always got the impression that our newer trucks were considerably worse off-road. Pretty sure you could go real cheap and use a spacer lift, throw on 33s (or even 35s) and that'd probably be a pretty capable little truck
@backwoodstherapy
@backwoodstherapy Жыл бұрын
That's what I'm saying. A cheap spacer lift, and some 35" RT or MT tires, and that truck will be an awesome little trail rig. Could even throw in a Detroit locker in the back if they wanted to get real fancy.
@smileyguyz
@smileyguyz Жыл бұрын
@@backwoodstherapy I'd say removing the front swaybar, high clearance bumper, small lift/bigger tires, and some armor would make it incredibly capable. Removing the front swaybar and leaving the rear would improve front/rear balance when flexed out. There were a few spots where the rear tires were in the air, but the IFS wasn't at full compression yet. If they removed that sway bar, it'd allow the front end to fully utilize the available travel and keep more wheels on the ground, while also helping the truck level out a bit more when fully flexed.

There is power in the beater rig people underestimate. A beater is by default, 10x more capable than any new rig because the owner just doesn't give a hoot. You can squeeze every millimeter of ground clearance out of them, you can drag the frame across a rock with one wheel in the air, you can squeeze through gaps that damage body panels and keep on trucking, because you already got your money out of the rig. At this point, it's less of a test of capabilities and more of a test to see what it will put up with before it dies. 40s are unnecessary in the beater world.

I think stubby would be a GREAT platform to modify and keep around. Plus, it's not like TFL has a ton of funds tied up in it. Time to replace the front & rear bumper with something more off-road oriented, small lift and slightly more aggressive tires, then get him back out there.

great video Alex/Kase, Moab is a place everybody talks about going to and 95% never go to and this video just showed what you can do stock, and if one chooses to improve its ability, tires and a levelling kit are the most economical way to go and theses trucks all have basic ABS/TSC built in which does help in some situations, we had a early 2005 GMC W/T1500 4x4 4,3 V6 auto we bought off our employer for peanuts, it already had worn out A/T tires so we put on a set of 33" KO2's and a levelling kit, it came with the G80 option LTD slip Rear Diff and we changed the rear gears from #.23's to 3.73's we bought used with another LSD, it went from being capable stock to being very capable with slight mods, we did put a trans cooler on it right away , cheap insurance, it never left us stranded anywhere and had fun with it for 3 years put it all back to stock sold the tires on FB Marketplace left the levelling kit on it tossed on new brakes all 4 corners from Rockauto and got close to what we asked for it, we had fun with it for a small investment and nobody can really ask anymore than that 👍

I had a 2wd Ram just like that, but with the Hemi. Dodge traction control really is a cut above Ford - even with 'open' differential, it did fine. 120" wheelbase does a lot. Just think how much better it would be just with the "Rebel" level with 34" tires and the 1" front lift and some factory skid plates.
