Yeah... If it wasnt for cold steel 3 making a huge hit.... I wouldnt have found the best jrpg of all time.. HANDS DOWN MOTHER FU... anyway. I grew up playing ff4 and ff6 at the age of 7... fell in love, never looked back. RPG is what keeps my mind going.

@@ihsanmb Final Fantasy 6 has an extremely good story. I've also heard good things about Suikoden 1/2 and Breath of Fire, but I've yet to play those myself. In terms of non-JRPGs, the original Phoenix Wright trilogy is outstandingly well-written.

Ouch, playing the Whereabouts of Light in the end of the video with the footage of Estelle playing it on that pear on Joshua's harmonica is a low blow and really hits home.

One thing I haven't seen in this game's reviews is that when a character completes an area of effect damaging spell, craft points are recovered for each enemy hit, regardless of resistances or immunities.

That was a marvelous review. That was an interesting point about 'one of the best of all time' with regards to them as separate experiences. I pretty much say The Legend of Heroes (sky & Cold steel) is one of the very best games ever made :)

I love the Trails in the Sky trilogy. I am confused why some dislike the 3rd game though. I think the 3rd game was an awesome addition for the fans.

It's the changes to the gameplay. I liked the added character growth we got for much of the cast after SC, but I didn't really like the whole dungeon crawler aspect of the gameplay. One of the best aspects of the Legend of Heroes series is its fully realized world and 3rd chapter pretty much takes the world right out of the game. I really missed those towns. I found myself wanting to revisit Liberl again and talk to the NPCs to see what they had been up to. 3rd chapter didn't allow me to do that, which made it less enjoyable. I enjoyed my first run through 3rd chapter, but I don't really find myself wanting to go back and play it again. It isn't as replayable as FC and SC, or The Cold Steel games for me.

Man I just finished SC and I will say that this game will have a place in my heart forever. Excellent story, awesome characters , fun gameplay and epic music. The most insignificant NPC have also its charm , man I’m lost for words just play it !

Zero/Ao are the best Arcs. Zero is the best "starter" chapter. Ao is the wildest ride ever. It NEVER stops blowing minds.

Firstly, great review. I understand what you're saying about FC and SC are one game, that's because they are. Falcom wanted FC and SC to be one game, but had to split them due to size. It was the same with Zero and Ao no Kiseki, and also with Trails of Cold Steel I and II. They was all intended to be one game, but had to be split into two. It's happened again with Cold Steel III and IV. Anyway, I'm so happy you went back and are playing earlier entries in the series. The 3rd is my favourite of the Sky trilogy. Please, please, PLEASE play Zero and Ao no Kiseki after The 3rd. Taken as a singular game (which they're meant to be), I'd go as far as to say it rivals Final Fantasy VI as my favourite game of all time. I'm update with the series and am waiting for Cold Steel IV is September, I will tell you this; you've got some of my favourite games of all time coming in in The 3rd, Zero and Ao. I think Cold Steel III is incredible as well (the best of the Cold Steel arc). If you don't know what Zero and Ao no Kiseki is, then it's the Crossbell arc of the Trails series. I'm sure you've heard about Crossbell through FC, SC and CS I and II. The Crossbell arc takes place at the same time as CS I and II. They're a sequel to The 3rd (you need knowledge from The 3rd). I will also say, Trails of Cold Steel III expects you to know everything that has happened in every title in the series (especially the Crossbell arc). With what I've seen of IV, then it's even more important. Zero and Ao both have fan translations available. A fantastic team is working on a more professional translation for Zero and eventually Ao. They're called the Geofront Team and the title they've given Zero is Trails to Zero. They have a fantastic team of all big members of the Falcom community. Sorry for the long post, I'm just glad you've gone back and not like other people who've only played CS and are crying daily for CS III, which they'll be lost on so many things because they haven't played the whole series.

The crossbell arc is definitely on my list after Sky 3rd. I was just hoping to find some place to play a proper localized version but it's not looking like that's going to happen. I'll play the fan-translation and buy a japanese import or something so I'm still supporting the series.

Tarks Gauntlet Good. Sadly, I don't think it'll happen either, it's the best the series has to offer. Yeah that's what I done with the fan translations. I mean I own every physical and digital release for the series, so I guess Falcom have had enough money off me haha. Honestly though, by the time you're done with The 3rd, the improved fan translation for Zero will likely be out. I think that'll feel really close to an official translation as possible. The team all know the series better than anybody and are all great writers. They've cleaned up all the text so it looks really clean and clear. It looks really impressive. Looking forward to your review of The 3rd and so on. Enjoy mate.

Unfortunately, due to complications, the likely hood of the localization of the CrossBell Series is as close as you can get to near zero. Besides the enormous amount of characters that they have to translate for both games (around 3+ mil characters together), there was also some issues that occured with kadokawa that prevented this from being localized around the time of it's release. Falcom actually does want their games to reach as large amount of audience as possible across all regions and though all the available platforms . It's just that things aren't as simple as most people expect them to be. If it ever happens, I expect it to be a 2025 re-release/re-master . I'd say it's well worth getting into the fan-translation or leaning Japanese to play it. As for me, I chose learn JP to make it in time for Cold Steel 3 as well as the crossbell franchise. Though I had to do it with some help of a screen to capture translator since I don't know all the kanji that I need to know to understand everything cohesively without too much guesswork.

Gambit Zeta Yep I know about it and I completely agree that it won't happen, sadly. I feel for my fellow western Kiseki fans who won't experience the incredible Crossbell arc. I don't know Japanese, but I used the translation spreadsheet at the time. I knew I needed to play The 3rd before moving on, so I held out. With Cold Steel III, I don't expect a western release till 2020 at the earliest. So I imported the LE and boy am I glad I did. I understood the story perfectly and got 100% completion without a guide. I now have the platinum and am tempted to do playthrough number 3 once I beat my replay of Sen II Kai and Ao Evo. Doubt I'll fit it in before IV though. I'm going to need to do something to understand them books you get with IV's LE though.

It is so good that I no longer think we need an official english translation for the crossbell arcs, just this eng patch is more than enough. Download on nicoblog. it's the beginning of the Kiseki series ,Dragon slayer and the Gagharv trilogy are no related to the story of Every games after. So yes FC and SC are the first two games of the series Btw FC and SC should have been one game but the developpers separete it into two games because it should have been a 140+hour rpg xD that's why i think Sc is the second best rpg ever just after Ao no kiseki i'm just a passionnate fan of the series and i really hope you will play all of the series Plz don't stop with the 3rd Zero and Ao no kiseki have been translated by fan and you can play it right now (even the Pc version)

Ao and Zero are definitely on my to-play list. I'll likely import a japanese copy and play the fan translation. Just gonna be while before I can get to it. Still gotta hit sky 3, and the plates a little loaded right now with other games.

Trails in the Sky SC is regarded as the best game in the Trails series in Japan. There're others who say it's Ao no Kiseki (Trails to Azure) though.

Hey Tark, thanks for another great review. Got a question for you, I really want to get into this series but don't know whether to wait for the rumoured PS4 ports (are they ever going to happen?) or just buy what I can for PS3. I think only Cold Steel 1 and 2 are available for PS3. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

"Where to start" is always a tough question with this series. I'd say cold steel 1 and 2 on ps3 are the easiest games to jump into, though I have no clue about the ps4 versions.Thing is, I heard Cold Steel 3 completely spoils the plot of another entry in the series known as the crossbell duology, and from what I seen recently, Cold steel 4 will be taking a lot from Trails in the Sky 1, 2 and 3 with some big returning characters. I think it'd be safe to start at CS1 and 2, but each game and series you play in the franchise will make the rest of them stronger.

I play pretty much every JRPG that comes out, across all platforms and have been for at least 20 years. I say this because when I am asked what my favorite JRPG game is, I can never put any trails, not yet (fingers crossed for CS4 which is looking amazing) there as a single best game. I probably would say Persona 5 is currently in that spot. That said, if taken as a series of currently 8 games and you want a narrative like that of reading a fantastic 10 book epic and such, no game or series comes close to Trails.

I just need to add here. The legend of heroes saga is doing with games what marvel did with movies. There's a lot of world building and character development through all their games (Trails in the sky, the crossbel saga and trails of cold steel). You'll find a lot of references and some characters appearing through all 9 games. Judging these games individually won't make them justice, just like the infinity war movies were, by themselves they're above regular, but there was a lot of building up thorugh all the previous movies, that's what make the final movies so special.

For sure. The disclaimer I included here was mostly for people like "I heard this 'Sky SC' game is one of the best JRPGs ever, can't wait to play it" then they skip over the first game thinking it might be more like a final fantasy or something where they're not related. It's absolutely essential to play the game that this one stands on the shoulders of to be so good. It's not an incredible experience taken on its own.

Will you also be playing zero no kiseki or ao no kiseki? (the 4th and 5th games in the series prior to cold steel) They only have loose translations on a psp emulator but man am i having a blast with them. Even if you play it casually I'd recommend it because trails of zero (zero no kiseki) takes place during the same time of trails of cold steel 1 and ao no kiseki with cold steel 2.

All of the BGM is from Trails in the Sky SC, but Stella Glow has an amazing and often similar soundtrack.

Falcom intended trails in the sky fc and sc to be 1 game. However, size of the game proved to be too large, so they had to separate it into 2 games. So technically, FC+SC is 1 game. Not 2.

Well no.. "technically" and literally, it's 2. Just like lord of the rings is 3 books despite the authors intent. The determining factor comes down to release format.

I don't think saying "The first 4 chapters are spent doing investigation missions" is a spoiler... especially considering nobody knows the events of those investigations. That'd be like saying "Every mission in call of duty has you shooting people" is a spoiler of that games full plot.

The "Curse" has a way of influencing peoples actions, so it stands to reason the answer is "Both." Without the influence of the curse Weissmann maybe wouldn't have been able to manipulate people well enough for the events there to transpire.

@@TarksGauntlet I just got to Chapter 3 in FC about 20 hours in. I am like the game so far. I guess the second game it that much longer. I own the CS 1-3 also for PS4 also but playing in order. I might skip the zero games the only ones I don't own.

@@iamnotyourbuddyGUY Sky 2 is a bit longer than the first but not by an insane amount. You'll find chapter lengths vary quite a bit. Generally things in SC are much faster paced than FC.

I've notice that ever since AngryJoe said he didn't want to play the rest of the Kingdom Hearts series before KH3 that its looked down upon for criticising games for not standing on there own. I really don't get why. Its just fanboys being fanboys if you ask me.

With KH3 I can understand it more. It's been a long time since that series started and even the biggest fans from back in the day are likely going to need to be caught up to speed on some of the plot developments again. With this video I'm not so much criticizing it for not standing on it's own, just really trying to drill in that this and the first were more or less made to be 1 game and if you don't play them as 1 game it's simply not going to work. I think KH3 will make an effort to be accessible. Especially if squares console releases the past few years are anything to go by.

Yes, I did. And I've dealt with the word for years before that having never heard it and tried to reason it out myself. Old habits die hard. I still try to not say "Mario" with a sharp-a. It's not the most important thing in the world lol. Out of the whole video its a shame anybody needs to focus on a mis-pronunciation of a word outside of popular lexicon. Like the whole video boils down to that...

I just finished FC last night I'm trying to get thru as much of the liberl arc as I can before tocs3, I just binged thru tocs 1 and 2 about a month ago after I found them. I just thought it was funny seeing as they pronounce it in the game.

I would really like to but I dont think I'll have time because I know I wont be able to resist jumping into cs3 when it comes out. Every year I go to a music festival around that time and take an extra day off work after to recover and I always have a new game waiting for me. This year that'll be cs3. I could definitely tell from the demo that there will be lots of characters from other games, seems like more so than cs1 or 2 but that's where i started so idk. My plan is to finish liberl, play cs3, then do crossbell and all of erebonia over. Hopefully by that time geofront will be out but I'm not opposed to using the currently available translations. Man you're definitely right about this one tho. *vague spoiler alert* I was definitely choked up at the beginning, it was so sad to see her rush back home thinking he was gonna be there. I just finished chapter 1 and the difficulty and scale has definitely been ramped up that first big boss was a lot of fun.

I think you have to be a certain kind of special to criticize a sequal for needing the boarder context of the one that came before it.

Not really a criticism, just a statement of fact meant to set people on the right path of playing this from part 1 and not part 2, as so many people have addressed sky chapter 2 as "one of the best JRPGs ever made," which, in my estimation, gives the false impression of being a stand alone experience. I don't think this is such a bad thing to bring into conversation and set the record straight for those who need it.
