Yeah I always find The Train a little slow in the beginning, but once it gets up to speed it rolls along nicely.

Actually. The one that ends up sideways and crashed into at around halfway through in the black and white film was set for scrap so it was harmed.

All the wrecks from The Train were real. France was decommissioning their old steam engines, so the movie makers could do what they wanted with them. And they wanted to do a lot to them. The triple train-wreck was shot in real time with real locomotives. They even blew up an abandoned train yard for the air-raid sequence. Far more impressive than any CGI sequence.

Hopefully you found it funny where it was supposed to be funny...

Ther opening chase, from The Seven Per Cent Solution, was actually filmed on the Severn Valley Railway, between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. Never realised how much the Severn Valley looked like Austria till then.....

From what I remember, in Duel the semi tried pushing Weaver's car into the train, which didn't really fit in with train chases. Even for car chases, most of the movie was the truck lurking in the mirror, harassing and then eventually hunting down Weaver.

I was thinking of one specific moment in the film. After the scene where Weaver tries to call the cops there is a brief moment where he pulls onto the side of the road and is woken by a passing freight train (Perhaps the same one the truck tried to push him into.) and then heads off down the road to find the truck waiting for him. Then as the chase enters the last 14 minutes Weavers car goes past a freight train and as the truck goes past it and the train sound their horns (The truck sounds first.) as if the hunter was thanking the beater for it's services, this takes place at about 1hr 12min into the film.

As a train buff, I think it only fair to add two things, the locomotive Santa Fe 2600 that appears in the 'To Live and Die in LA' car chase is a CF7, one of a number of F7 locomotives converted from carbody to roadswitchers in the 1970s and I think the only member of the class to appear in a motion picture. But the really interesting story comes with 'Under Siege 2' the two locomotives pulling the train, used to belong to the Alaska Railroad and made up the trailing units on the four engine set in 'Runaway Train', they were the two GP7s (They had cosmetic modifications to give them old style 'high noses' for filming.) behind the F unit (Which is now in retirement at the Alaska Railroad Museum.).

@@MilwaukeeRoadJames It's the lesser known adaption of the famous Andrews Raid during the Civil War, which was when in 1862 a group of Union raiders snuck into the Confederacy to hijack a train and then sabotage the railway line so the Confederacy couldn't resupply and reinforce it's troops in Tennessee. Buster Keaton's 1920's silent film has gone done as a historic landmark, Walt Disney's 1956 film sadly has been forgotten and relegated to a pile of unkwon Disney live action films from back in the day.

Diesel Don, that's actually a CF7, those were rebuilt from the Santa Fe's fleet of passenger F7s for use in yard work and local freights.
