Definatley if the cab is not suitable for you to do your job don't take it, kind of like aircraft, if the captain isn't happy he wont take it safety first.

6:03 You were right to say that you didn't want to take the train. Passengers just need to realise that the driver needs to be safe and comfortable aswell, or they can't do their job.

You have computers and electrical equipment in your train, doesn’t mix with water. Your were right!

You were absolutely right not to drive the train, I remember another driver complaining about a wet seat because the window had been left open. I didn't know about trains having 'hazard warning lights' so that's something new I've learnt 👍

Bravo for being honest about how you felt. Also, Passengers don't generally understand that a train moving fast with water coming in can be a rather unpleasant experience and not safe. Especially if it means your getting wet and if your having to wipe your face, or the buttons/levers are getting wet, what if you slipped, got an electric shot etc. Enjoy your break.

Once sat in the old “Second Mans” seat of a couple of 86s taking me home from what was Stonebridge Park (Now Wembley WEFOC) watching the driver literally driving, (and cancelling the DSD) IN HIS SLEEP!!! Think we must have covered at least 10 miles with his head slumped and his mouth wide open before we got the customary “Check down” yellows on approach to Bletchley! Watching him panic as he woke up to an AWS warning alarm and frantically try to cancel it, then deny he was ever asleep, is one of my funniest memories in 30 years of train driving!!!😂🤣😂

I once cancelled a service because of rain on the inside of the screen and also because of no plasters in first aid boxes during a work to rule, having cut myself replacing safety equipment which had fallen from cupboard and cut my hand on spare train shoe fuse.

I've know of atleast one case of a driver taking the train even with a leak here in Ireland, from Waterford to Dublin sitting in a bin bag & on one too to try stay dry.

Amazing vid. And for the rain/ puddle I think it’s up to the driver and conductors desecration to refuse to drive the train for any sort of reason. And I think that was a good choice to refuse the train.

5:55 smart think would be to reform the train if possible, so a different cab was at the lead.

That’s normally what happens where possible. I can’t remember the specifics now but it is possible that the train was a single 4 car unit so re forming would not have been possible

If I was a passenger with water on the inside of the windows, puddles on the floor and water dripping on seats, I think I'd have something to say! And whilst I dont drive, I too would refuse on safety grounds as well as working conditions. You'd be the one in the dock should the worst happen and you can guess the line of questioning.

I enjoy your new to me chanel. with due respect, as an old british rail fireman , 1955to 1960, steam of course,at Old Oak common. we often had to work steam engines tender first and open to all weathers, how would you have coped with that?
@DadRail
@DadRail 2 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine what the conditions must have been like on the footplate of a steam engine, especially in the hot weather conditions. Its bad enough sat on a class 66 with no aircon on a ballast all day. Cant begin to imagine what that must have been like with a roaring fire, and physically working hard as well.

I agree the train should not have been taken out. Its astonishing how there is pressure to take unsuitable vehicles out to please the public, who then moan.. I'm a bus driver, & if the heaters aren't working, or the windscreen is leaking etc we are still 'encouraged' to take the vehicle out, & while they cannot sack you for not, you can be sure you'll be in the managers office within a few weeks for something minor, which has been escalated up out of proportion.
@DadRail
@DadRail 3 жыл бұрын
I have heard that bus companies can be a bit like that. At the end of the day, the vehicle is your office and its your license on the line. If its isn't safe or comfortable don't take it.

Wet driver may well possibly end up a sick driver which will potentially result in more cancellations. If the leak was only on the floor and not near electrics that's fine go for it. But when near electrics or dripping on the driver then stuff that for a joke.

Hey mate have you ever had a SPAD? Also what are the consequences if a driver dose SPAD?
@DadRail
@DadRail 6 жыл бұрын
Hey, Fortunately I have never been involved in a SPAD, however I have had a TPWS overspeed activation approaching a Red Signal. Most companies are about learning and development rather then punishment. Understanding that we are only human and will make mistakes, they look at what happened, why it happened and what can be done do make sure it doesn't happen again. However if a particular driver has numerous safety incidents then there is the possibility of a license review, but to get to this stage it would have to be pretty consistent. The old 3 strikes and your out rule is dead and buried in my experience.

Imagine that you go into your kitchen to find that it has flooded to a similar degree to his train cab.... 'Unpleasant environment' is good old British understatement! If you own a car, at the very least you would surely delay your journey in order to check it out and *if possible* make it safe to drive. On the railway there's usually no time to do that without causing even worse consequential disruption.
