The 'AWS termination' sign means that AWS (Automatic Warning System) magnets are not included with any signals after this sign until the 'AWS Commence' sign is passed (which is a sign with AWS written on it and has white background). Also, great to see you Back!!

There are a handful of POSA signals around Streatham, the Streatham Spur and at Streatham Common. They've been live there almost couple of years. There are also now some around Sutton which went live in April this year. There are lots of signals between Bricklayers Arms and London Bridge (central side, I'm not sure about eastern side) with POSAs on them too.

What's the deal with filming from the cab? Can you just stick your camera on the dash and go for it? There are some nice cab rides up the ECML and some local branches around my way on this guy's channel: kzfaq.info/love/_PsdlpgPtKRmWLkH2vgm0w Sign = start of AWS gap.

There are pretty strict rules regarding using electrical devices in cabs. In theory it would be really easy for me to get some cab ride and in cab footage, and i would love to it would help to explain a lot of the issues that i talk bout. Trouble is i have to be careful and not cause a conflict of interests, its more then my job is worth. Unless I can get footage legitimately, either with permission or in the same way a member of the public could then I cant use it.

Surprised POSA signals are newly introduced. In Belgium we’ve had them a long time. It is just a white light the signaller can turn on making the signal temporarily ‘permissive’. Germany has something similar with 3 small white lights, they can also turn a signal of with it showing just 1 small white light making the signal ‘non-existent’ to a driver. These are signals that usually apply to one specific route but not another coming of of yards or stations.

Permissive working is nothing new in the UK. The POSAs are a great idea, I would love to see them more widely adopted

That sign means that AWS is not fitted from the sign up to the sign which states that AWS is active, or the end of the line. Normally this sign is seen at areas with low speed limits or where I think track works are taking place on AWS ramps.

The sign means that Automatic Warning System (AWS) magnets are not provided in the area beyond the sign, usually because of a low speed limit at a terminal station

So how would drivers of older diesel and steam trains on charters manage? As I guess drivers would have to have knowledge of the type of engine also so how do charter companies handle this?
@DadRail
@DadRail Жыл бұрын
In most cases of the driver doesn’t have route knowledge they will be accompanied by somebody who does. This is known as route conducting.

Hey is Paul Callar still a driver on the SE division? Sadly I don't agree with your view on the new London Bridge as a massive piece of railway heritage was thrown away, the very first terminus of its kind in the world and London's first major station shows how old the central side really was... My late father worked the platform's 1-6 section in the London Bridge power box nicknamed the widowmaker because of the incredible throughput of the rush hour traffic and massively stressful especially by irate drivers watching the clocks wanting to know why they got a big red one for long waits at a time.

Hi Ian. The name does not ring a bell do you know what depot he was at? I was lucky enough to spend a little bit of time in London Bridge box when it was still fully opertional, very impressive how they signalled so many trains without the aid or ARS. It was always very congested there. I remember sitting on 6 up L120 signal and having thameslink trains come off the UPL into the platform. They always seemed to get priority, however a thameslink driver would say the same about us!

Impressive Vlogs, keep it going :) I do have a bunch of questions for you ( I like to make a compare between railway system's especial in Europe because I'm driver in my country too, and UK is very interesting to me as I played a lot of train simulator prior my driving licence and a lot of it took place in UK) How is it with the route knowledge precisely? How many times are you obligated to ride a certain route prior signing route knowledge? (We need to do it 2x on day light and 2x in night in both directions) I haven't seen any driver timetable from UK jet, so is it like you need simply to remember all the posts and the speed limits or do you have a pice of paper/book/tablet when driving to look for mileposts of important things on the line like speed limits, point limits? In video you mentioned you need to know witch line is electrified and witch isn't, ain't the responsibility of correct route setting for your train (including knowledge that one is a electric) fully on the shoulders of signalman?
@DadRail
@DadRail 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment, What country are you in? With regard to route knowledge, we have to pass over the route enough times to meet the standard each route has different requirements because of the length and complexity of the line. some short sections maybe 1 or 2 trips, where as some longer routes may need several weeks. We are required when we do are initial driver training to do 50 hours of dark driving. You have to know the entire route from memory. Locations of all the line side features, tunnels, stations, signals, level crossings, speed limits. We are expected to know it without using a route map. In the case of being signalled over a wrong route. It is a join responsibility. All of our signals have indications to tell the driver what route has been set for the train. The signalman would be responsible for giving the incorrect route, and the driver would be in trouble for accepting the route.

Dad Rail I'm from Slovenia (small country in south of Austria and east of Italy) Oh that is a bit hard, i do know routes i drive on the moast but i coudn't drive on a route i drive aprox every 2 months without a timetable (route map) i do have it on a tablet...but here every train has its own speed limits (we have seperate limits for normal/light/and tilting trains) and without timetable you can mix them up quite fast. In initial training we doesnt have any requirements how many night hours we have to do, you re just placed with a superior driver in sift and work with him aprok 3 months (minimal 5000 km or 560 h, before that there is aprox 3 months of signal and traffic rules and for every locomotive aprox 1 week of theory )
@DadRail
@DadRail 6 жыл бұрын
Our training is the same pretty much. We are 3 months classroom to learn the rules of the railway, and then 2 weeks for each type of train. we then have to do a minimum of 225 hours with a driving instructor (this is on the normal shift pattern) but within the 225 hours you must meet certain targets. i.e 50 hours in the dark. 100 Station stops, Certain number of attachments and detachments. working empty trains. Shunting, as wells as train faults ect. We do have a document called the sectional appendix on our tablets that details all the line information, but we are not allowed any electronic devices (phones tablets) turned on in the cab when driving. Do you only drive in Slovenia or do you drive cross boarder trains. Im guessing you are now under the EU train driving license same as in the uk (at least for now!)
@sz541
@sz541 6 жыл бұрын
We also have things that we need to go trough when lerning new loco like shunting with it ect. We do need to write a diary and we need to know how to take care of certain faults too. How do you see the timetable for certain train that you drive? You only see the stops and time of arr and dep? With the phones is like that...there is no certain rule that we arent allowed to use it...but we are asked in periodical school at least once per year that we keep it to a minimum, becouse some people are upset if they see us using the phone...they think that that is forbiden like in a car but it simply isn't. At the time being i drive only in Slovenia and to the border stations in Italy and Croatia, but as I've heard there will be posibility to do a Austrian Licence in near future to and I can't wait for it :)

I appreciate your reasoning but please keep giving the answers to your questions on your KZfaq vids! Thanks! In regards to POSAs, I was told they were called dolly lights or something consisting of two white and one red. If white and red not pass, if both white you can pass to next signal. They are the same shape as the POSAs. Have you come across them and have i got the name correct? Cheers!
@DadRail
@DadRail 4 жыл бұрын
Dolly lights, dummies, shunt signals, or ground position light signals are what you are thinking off. (they are all the same thing known by different names) They would be a red and white or 2 reds at 90 degrees, meaning stop. 2 white lights or red and white at 45 degrees means proceed as far as the line is clear obeying all other signals and being prepared to stop short of any obstructions. They are normally used for shunt movements inside depots and yards, or sometimes on the mainline when using wrong road crossovers ect. They are very common.
