I remember the day I watched this movie with my parents. We loved it. But we're a somehow "cold" family, we don't show sadness that easy, especially not in front of other family members. But the moment we heard the girl singing, this facade broke down. I tried to hold it in for a few seconds, but I couldn't. It fucked me up in so many ways. I started crying like the girl itself. My parents teared up too, especially my dad. We sat there in silence for a few minutes. It was a somehow weird, but beautiful moment.

I think the reason korean movies use a lot of father/daughter is from what I know is korea has a very competitive society and since fathers are usually always working to provide, a lot of fathers miss the opportunity to be really there for their children, and honestly it’s not only korea I think most people in general.

Also it can be a commentary on how expectations of society affects men, like if they don't go work and provide they're not "man enough" or "they don't care" but at the same time like you sad the constant working won't let them be near the people they care abt and is heartbreaking

If you work extra hours and don't take your days off to go home to your elderly parents, your a bad son. If you take your vacation days and use it to go to your parents, your not working hard enough so no promotion/pay raise and your a bad provider. Your damned either way. It's why a lot of elderly in Korea are killing themselves so they won't be a burden to their children. South Korea didn't have it's industrial revolution until the 1960s. Transitioning from families living on farms to workers living in cities is not smooth.

When Su-an speaks to her dad in the beginning of the movie, she uses formal speech, but when she speaks with her mom, she uses informal speech. So to korean-speakers this shows even MORE of a contrast between her relationship with both parents. But by the end, Su-an uses informal speech to her dad too, making the ending even more heart breaking T_T

Also HIGHLY recommend “I saw the Devil,” starring Choi Min-Sik (Old Boy) and Lee Byung-Hun (G.I.JOE, Terminator Genesys, Magnificent 7, Red2) who also plays the “Frontman” with that face shaped dark grey mask. Its basically Tom and Jerry, or rather Itchy and Scratchy, just with real humans. One being a psycho serial killer and another one being a NIS-agent (=CIA in the states) who has completely lost his mind, and is just extremely pissed off at the psycho. And Vice versa.
