The trainee shouldn’t be doing any work unsupervised, very poor quality of work.

For me, the entire Level 2 needs an overhaul. It's full of irrelevant stuff like building services exams and health and safety and not enough practical. Learning about the construction of an atom or resistors in series is a complete waste of time for an installation electrician. It should teach the basics of how to use the guidance notes and OSG to select breakers, cable sizing, basic testing and fault finding. Then it should be all practical. How to run in and strip cable, how to mount stuff properly, how to terminate properly, how different circuits work, especially lighting. Proper earthing. Instead we have irrelevant modules and stuff that is covered elsewhere (H&S is covered by your CSCS/ECS card for example). The whole thing is a waste of time. Even the science and principles is taken completely out of context of the job of installation electrician.

My understanding about the electrician apprenticeship in my area of the Pacific NW it encompasses a five year program with 900 hours of classroom instruction one day a week and 8,000 hours of on the job training. There are so many areas of electrical work, inside wiring, commercial, industrial which takes time to learn.

Issue with the last light was too much sheathing taken off right? (Not an electrician)

I’m still learning but I believe the orange clamp should hold the fully insulated cable and the individual wires should be separated past this point.

Not necessarily, it was that the outer sheathing should have been in the grip. You never clamp down on singles.

As a "trainee electrician" who is currently at night college 2 nights a week for a year, and then hopefully "level 3" next year, ive never heard of this so called "short course" people are on about? Surely the way im doing it over 2 years or more, gaining knowledge and experience is the best way? You simply just cant be a professional overnight? Surely?
@electricalstuff259
@electricalstuff259 5 ай бұрын
The courses will not teach you how to be an electrician irrespective of how long they take. The course you're doing can be done in 7 weeks and you learn the exact same thing. It taking 5 times longer makes no difference in the outcomes of knowledge.

Wont blame the trainee , its the training providers that show them dreams to become electricians overnight and after spending fortune, trainees get pressurised to work and does blunders like these. The training providers needs to stop giving short courses and train them well so they can work independently
@mikeZL3XD7029
@mikeZL3XD7029 5 ай бұрын
That isn't intrinsically true though, sure you could blame the training provider but at the end of the day, it comes down to the trainee having the ability to think for themselves. Do trainees need to have their hands held at every turn in the road, these days? A certain amount of the standard of this work is lack of intuition on the part of the trainee, especially the cable going into the light fitting, there is a cable grip for a reason, why would you not use that?

I'm on a level 2 at the moment and my lecturer is literally telling them they can go it alone after the course. I told them all they can't and he contradicted me and said they could sign off work because they've shown they've got training.

@@mikeZL3XD7029 you maybe a trained electrician mate but ground reality is when you go to training providers offering these short courses, the students literally think of themselves as electricians after short courses. When I did my inspection and testing, there was a guy who had no background in electrics besides 2 weeks part p course and he passed his inspection and testing obviously with the help of training provider and imagine how many certificates he may have issued over the years. Who is to be blamed? you give a certificate and license to inexperienced drivers and how is the driver alone to be blamed ?

I have had ZERO official electrical training and could easily do better than this. Why the mitre? Such an odd way to fo it. What's with the switch wire? Why all the junction boxes. Why not decent conduit?
@mikeZL3XD7029
@mikeZL3XD7029 5 ай бұрын
Maybe the customer required that the cables be run in surface capping, as opposed to conduit. Mitres are fine if done at exactly 45°, but look terrible if not exact.

For me, trunking looks sh*te full stop, so i always just butt it up it looks neater. In this install i would 100% use conduit, conduit can look quite smart if done properly. Trunking always looks cack.

If this was done by a 'trainee' why refer to him as an electrician? 🤔 Plus a trainee/student/pupil is only as good as their teacher... I'm sure Gary taught you that 😏

Sometimes you can have the best teacher, but the trainee is still useless. Even more so with these short duration courses. Competence takes time and desire. Two things very lacking in the industry no how many good teachers there may be

Perhaps they are colour blind.! Do these training course's test the trainee's for colour deficiency. Answer, probably NO. When my son left in 2016 and went on a year training course in level 1 Electrical. Only 1 of the 3 recognised training colleges in the Bristol, S.G. and Bath area tested for colour blindness before offering a placement. Guess which one we went with.

Sad story but all the Apprentice Electricians were tested for colour blindness about 3 weeks into our City & Guilds course, first lot of block release. We didn't know it was going to happen. Unfortunately one poor lad found out he was colour blind and told his career as an Electrician was over. He was from a different firm so I didn't find out what happened to him, felt really bad about that. Thought it was poor this wasn't done up front at the application stage.
