In this video we look at the benefits of fitting a type 2 SPD (surge protection device) and what type of items it can protect. It is now very common to fit a type 2 SPD in a domestic consumer unit to protect circuits from transient over voltages caused by switching inductive loads and atmospheric conditions.

Electrium (wylex, crabtree etc etc) back in 2018 when SPDs were coming in to the market told me that all of this extra protection was being enforced by insurance companies. Then we got AFDDs at an eye watering price...i wonder what will be next?! Great video and nicely explained

A question: Can I connect two low power devices (a small bathroom Fan) and an external but not exposed (to the elements) LED, motion sensitive threshold light to the same switch?

I fit these as standard with new boards of any size - and all RCBOs. I explain to customer what they're for: they ask how do they check it - look if windows show red, then it needs replacing... Good look with that. Most customers don't check their RCD/RCBOs regularly or even look under flap of the CU for years, unless there's a trip. So if a line of storms come through and one spike takes out the SPD, the house is open to the next surge. Without in-built alarm that SPD has failed this 'basic' format of SPD is one adjacent to useless.

We have to fit Type I & II now if the supply doesn't have a type I fitted, non of the supplies have a type I fitted.

What's the general opinion on mcb/rcbo position in the CU? Taking into consideration voltage drop/circuit impedance, surely its good practice to put higher current devices further up the busbar near the main switch?

Do these device manufacturers give any form of life expectancy of such devices running in normal conditions and more importantly, if they do need replacing how many years down the line are manufacturers guaranteeing availability of replacements?
