"If you cannot pull a single hard move, you have nothing to endure" ... that is probably the single best takeaway I have had about this kind of training. (Starting to train for Stok Kangri and Kang Yatse in India). My only problem is that the nearest hilly (not mountainous, just plain hilly) hike/trek is about 200 miles from where I live :( ... so I need to find a substitute for the weekend hikes. For now, I am just walking for about 10 miles (16 kms) every 3 days.

Thank you your info is very informative. I hike 4-5 miles two to three times a week , but I need too do more exercises, when I was going to the gym I hated it while I was there, but the results were outstanding. I guess I need to continue with my strength training

veronica kiyoko I’m not a fan of the gym either, I much prefer training outside, whilst there’s no substitute for really good barbell training you can certainly get “good enough” just with Bodyweight and some imagination. I’ve got a strength only program coming out soon which will be pretty cheap and very useful!

How can i take extra precautions when i already have a back injury (3 years post discectomy). Do i need to increase the training phases? Any specific muscles. i need to focus on to have the backpack stable on my spine? (35-40L). Im planning to to the chamonix-zermat trip

I went up Mt Blanc when I was 20 yo, with a hangover and a torn ligament in my ankle (drinking injury). It was fine on the way up (in Asolo supersoft AFS 101) but I almost cried on the descent. This was when the old hut was in use. The bog overhung the side. The place was packed and you didn't get any sleep. My ankle took a year to fully heal.

Honestly just by climbing it with a torn ligament is already pretty impressive (and dangerous too I'd guess)

I'm really glad I found this. I got really misled by a lot of the guide sites "intermediate fitness" requirements and thought I would be fine. Im a regular hiker and cycle but it turned out to not be enough. I made it 300m from the summit of gran paradiso and couldn't continue to mont blanc. Would you have a "from scratch" recommendation and time frame? I really feel a lot of the sites under sell the amount of fitness required. Again, very helpful, thanks!

Most trip providers have no idea about fitness requirements themselves so they write up some garbage about hiking or hill walking 3-5 days a week - as if anyone has the time to hike 5 days a week anyway?! But yeah in terms of the "starting from scratch" I have a program coming out soon called mountain proof and it's about building a strong body from the ground up, completely bodyweight training done at home, if you like you can jump on the list to be notified when it's finished! bit.ly/mtn-proof-ankles

@@ChaseMountains Great I'll check that out! Yeah you hit the nail on the head there. There was a real "hit and hope" element to the place I signed up to I think. They used very loose definitions like "intermediate fitness" required, which I thought fit me well! Anyway I'll be hoping to go back next year, but to learn rather than to "get to the top". Most of the people on my course where not even enjoying themselves, what is the point?! Anyway thanks for the reply! I think you have a great channel and a niche that really needs more content!

Strength first...unless your plenty strong already. I'd say go after your weaknesses. Build a huge aerobic base slowly , and strength at the same time, in the dose that YOU need. I can squat and deadlift about 500 pounds...so I'm not chasing strength anymore. I lift once a week ,fairly heavy,.and that maintains strength. So now I'm free to train aerobic and anaerobic sprints way more ,and put my recovery into that. That's the wonderful part of building strength , it's very hard and takes a lot of work and time but the results stick around a long time. But , you definitely need an aerobic base also. Hard to say one matters more than the other. My mountain time often(hopefully) involves packing out 100-130# packs of wild organic elk meat so I like to be durable.

Strength first? Interesting concept. I recommend "Training for the new alpinism" from Steve House. Very opposite to his statements. 🤔 😅✌

I actually just posted a video tomorrow that touches on this, I have kinda changed my mind...kinda. For example if you have weak ass legs, core, lower back. It might not be the best idea to skip strength and start running up hills. And yeah, a lot of what Uphill Athlete speak about I absolutely agree with, but I'm a strength coach, so I prioritise proper joint function first. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/or2PqpuZxKnViZs.html

@@ChaseMountains Right, fair enough. I do understand where you're coming from, don't get me wrong. I had to cringe though, because a statement from that book was something like "if you don't have the aerobic capacity to climb that mountain, what's all your strength worth...?" (paraphrazing here...). As I am new to all of this and by no means an expert, it's difficult to deal with all those different philosophies. It would be so much easier if there was a consensus on all of this. Looking forward to your video. Planning Monte Rosa Traverse (and possibly Mt Blanc) this July. So I kind of hope to be ready in time!

@@Repeatedlyreminded I'm familiar with the quote. The TFA book also states that quote from Tony Yaniro that I used in this video...'without the strength to do one rep, there's nothing to endure'. (I'm also paraphrasing probably) As always there's no consensus because each individuals situation is different. You've got to make the choice for yourself. Best of luck on Monta Rosa my man! The fact that you are reading and researching tells me you're probably gonna smash it, as long as you do the work as well 👊🏼
