If you want to see more of these videos, or would like to say thanks for this one, the best way you can do that is by becoming a patron - see the link above :). And a huge thank you to all my existing patrons - you make these videos possible.
The Matrix Transfer method allows us to easily calculate the reflectance and transmittance of multilayer structures. I talk about why we might want to (and indeed why we NEED to) use it, how the transfer matrix is actually derived, and how to calculate the total reflection and transmission of your structure using the transfer matrix.
Hope you found this video helpful, please post in the comments below anything I can do to improve future videos, or suggestions you have for future videos.

Hello, that is really an amazing video and really enjoyed the explanation , though I would like to know that the ro1 and to1 terms in the matrix for the transmission matrix are the reflectance and transmission coefficients that we have for the Fresnel equations in two medium systems

Yessir, all you need to do is replace the refractive index with a complex-valued number, and recalculate the propagation and transmission matrices.

Sir ! I really appreciate you for your effort . I've a question . when we use such a TMM method to study the optical parameters of crystalline material even with single layer ,we can't do it without elementary experimental data about certain material .If this method is independent of experimental data then Could you explain how?

Hi Jordan, thanks for the great video! Is it possible to deal with ultrashort pulses within the transfer matrix method?
@JordanEdmundsEECS
@JordanEdmundsEECS 2 жыл бұрын
What a brilliant question. Yes, you should be able to deal with ultrashort pulses by Fourier Transforming the input pulse, you can see what the "input frequencies" are. The TMM worksata single frequency, so you'll need to use the TMM as a function of frequency. Then, multiply the Fourier-Transformed pulses by the frequency-dependent output of the transfer matrix method, and inverse Fourier Transform the whole thing. (in practice, you will use the DTFT for this).

hi Jordan! do you know how one can derive the transfer matrix method from maxwell's equations?
@JordanEdmundsEECS
@JordanEdmundsEECS 4 жыл бұрын
Sure, this is why plane waves are so cool. Plane waves are a solution to Maxwell’s equations. The transfer matrix method just uses plane waves as a starting point and then goes from there. The boundary conditions used by the transfer matrix method can be derived using Maxwell’s integral equations (I have videos on that as well).

Personally I liked the examples in Neamen (Semi. Physics and Devices) and Pieret. I would recommend trynig to do those examples without looking at the solutions and then check whether you were correct. If you have the solutions manual for either of those books those can be used in place of examples.

Sure! If you want to master the material you are learning, don’t ever use an equation without 1. Understanding where it comes from and 2. Deriving it yourself. If you are able to do this, you will greatly reduce the amount of stuff you have to memorize and you will have a much deeper understanding of EE.

Yeah this was a huge challenge for me as well as there aren’t that many good references. The best I have found are the original paper (below) and a book called “Optics in Layered Media” by Yeh. sir will you please explain this method of transfer matrix for calculation of sound absorption of a multilayer structure.
@JordanEdmundsEECS
@JordanEdmundsEECS 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, the math is exactly the same. The only thing that is different is the velocity of the wave (it’s the velocity of sound in the medium), but you can then calculate k with the standard dispersion relation (w/k = v).

@4:40 you say that if we have this matrix we don't need to worry about infinite reflections. But is this really because of the transfer matrix method? The reason that we don't have infinite reflections is because we are working in the frequency domain, not the time domain.
@JordanEdmundsEECS
@JordanEdmundsEECS 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. I like to think of the frequency domain as the limit of longer and longer time domain 'thought experiments' (when we are concerned with a single frequency) as I have a hard time wrapping my head around things that don't happen in time :)p
