I bought this oak stump tree from the Doncaster bonsai show in February 2023 and I am doing an initial assessment and styling for it’s future journey as a bonsai tree.
Would you do anything different?
Enjoy 🙏

Trees like these are why I love bonsai. There's nothing wrong with an impressive formal upright. It's just that people have been doing those for 1,000 years. Interesting character pieces like this keeps the hobby fresh and fun for me.

Nice work mate. I think you definitely improved this and it's good that you didn't go too far with it, and it's well set up for the future. What it really needs now is leaving to just run for at least a year or two.

I will be interested to see how it looks in foliage - at that point any future plans might get binned for something different.

Difficult tree... I like the front at 18:01 Grts Kennet

Thanks Kennet. I also quite like that as a front too, but there are a couple of eye poker branches that would need dealing with. I think this tree will look quite different once it’s n leaf so my plans may change once I see that. 👍

My gosh Jason, I thought you were going to lose a finger when that saw came out! Perhaps you could use a smaller saw? Beautiful trunk in the end, and looking forward to its progression.

Wow really crumbly wood, definitely a cool tree I think every attest should have a tree like this… I had to give mine away to jay from blue jay bonsai when I moved… so although she ain’t pretty I’m sure you’ll make something of it!!

I was surprised the mini chainsaw didn't come out on that elbow. I like what you did with this tree, and monster was no exaggeration.

Well the tree looks better after you finished than when you started which is the main thing. All decisions made were the right ones. Was it expensive? Going to be a long term project that one.

I think I paid about £60 for it. It was quite striking and distinctive amongst the other trees for sale on the stall and I was looking for something with a thicker trunk. I definitely got that 😂

"the audio didn't record". classic Tony. I think we all know what Tony would have done - and it would have been brutal. 😂 I cant believe i've not seen this video of yours before. I really enjoyed it! and i know you think its an ugly lump but i think its awesome! (maybe that stems from me identifying as an ugly lump myself) hows it looking now?

A really challenging subject and some great decisions made. From my perspective Jason I would actually make the bulbous aspect part of the 'natural' design. 17:21 is the front for me because it also gives the most amount of movement for the remainder of the trunk, which I think you lose on your chosen front. I would also be considering the possiblity of ground layering it at the widest point of that bulge. All choices are open and it is not a critisicm by any means. i loved the video.

Thanks for presenting your alternatives Xav. The final design on this is by no means settled - the main thing here was to reduce that unsightly sharp elbow. I think provided that is significantly softened, making more of a feature of the trunk movement is definitely a possibility. I see this in quite a solid, squat round pot so viewing from any angle is definitely a possibility. As for the ground layering, I think the thickest part is already at soil level - probably not so obvious with the high lip of that plastic pot. 👍

I think the tree will look totally different once in leaf and I may have to totally rethink my plans when I see that.
