Something that’s made me less scared to cut good fabric is that I saw a reel where someone had saved fabric all beautifully folded on their shelf and pulled it out one day to find that it had gotten sun faded on the folded bit that was exposed and had sort of ruined the fabric. Things change and deteriorate no matter what, so you may as well use them and love them and mend them and use them some more

For the coat - you'll need to take out the lining and take apart the pieces, put them on top of brown paper or newspaper and cut around them to make pattern pieces. Then, choose your fabric - I've found that a heavy flannelized satin coat lining (sometimes called 'Kasha') is the best because you want something slick. Depending on how much warmer you want to make it, you can also find quilted coat lining fabrics that you can use as well. If you're committed to turning this into sort of a winter 'tank', then get the Kasha lining and on the flannelized back, put thin wool flannel (run it through the washer/dryer to shrink it down, which makes it dense), using the Kasha pieces as your pattern. This will make the lining literally heavy as lead, but it also makes the coat impervious to the wind and will keep you warmer. Then sew the pieces of the lining together and sew it into (sorry, you'll be doing this by hand - your hand sewing skills will be aces when you are done) the coat. Take up the bottom to match the bottom of the coat and off you go.

Try cutting the green dress short where it's ripped and add back some length by using the leftover fabric as a ruffle. It looks like snagged on something for the L shaped rip maybe a boot hook or zipper? You could add a slit or Gore's to the sides if it's too tight to walk in

Had an idea, had to pause the video. WITH THE GREEN DRESS embroider green leaves all along the slit (two tone, one almost the perfect match shade and one three shades darker) AND then just have one leave going to the side at the top mending it!!

An alternative, if you want to play with the shape of the dress, is to add a bunch of Godet's around the dress. Essentially they are a bunch of triangles, in the same colour or different, that really add volume to only the bottom of a dress!

I have a style challenge for you! I think I saw it on The sorry girls a few years ago. Put a marker of some kind (like a ribbon or tape) on the far right end of the rail in your wardrobe. Everyday, you have to style the first garment in your wardrobe, so the one on the far left on the rail. You can use any other pieces in your wardrobe as well, and when it has been used, it goes back on the other side of the marker. So you'll go through all of your clothes but you have to challenge yourself to use the first item everyday.

I recommend duplicate or swiss darning. Also, visibly mending with darning is super easy cause any colour goes - I bought just one rainbow yarn, because if it's rainbow it will....match every single thing with one of its colours, right? For the armpit, I would personally do a matching yarn, cause of the armpit if it's slightly off no one will notice.

Rewearing something for a week is such a good idea because the weather is probably pretty similar, you know you only have to wash that garment type at the end of the week (top bottom etc) and it gives you chance to wear it in different situations so you know if you really like it or just wear it for that one thing

I think I would insert a lace panel into the slit of the green dress. I would open it up to make it kore symmetrical and then add a lace panel either to completely fill the gap or to line the edges of it. Best of luck with all of your dreams - they seem ultimately doable and a fun challenge.

Almost all the sewing I do these days is mending. Theoretically I can draft my own patterns and make things that fit my body perfectly, but my body changes a lot, and it brings me a great deal of joy to be able to keep clothes that exist in use, rather than making new ones. I really want to embrace the creativity of visible mending, but I tend to get sucked in by the technical challenges of invisible mending. Dupilcate stitch on fairisle knitting, darning harris tweed, patching a down jacket... I just can't resist the challenge of figuring out how to match pattern and texture of the original garment as closely as possible. Which is probably why I get landed with so many weird mending projects by my family members.

Tip for repairing the green dress. Purchase some lightweight fusible webbing and sandwich it between the tear and a similarly colored light weight piece of fabric, making sure the the tear is closed. Iron it to melt the webbing and the backing fabric will keep the hole closed.

The green dress looks amazing on you! You could insert a small vertical band of fabric (the width of the rip) from top to bottom in a slightly darker shade of green, or a printed fabric in a green print, to make the mending into a design choice. It would just look as if the vertical stripe is meant to be there. Or, if it used to be a slit, and it has a seem there, you could make the skirt part smaller at the bottom, but it would become less A-line.
@nataliecarey5895

Or similarly you could add a godet panel in a coordinating or contrasting fabric, or a mesh or lace of some kind. And if you're feeling adventurous and want to change the shape of the dress you could do several godets around the whole dress.

For the green dress, you could sew decorative ribbon along the left side of the slit, then bring it up a little higher to hide the tear. If you do embroider it, you could do embroidery all along one or both sides of the slit so it looks intentional and you hide or draw attention away from the tear.
@lilpinkbear

For the green dress, one idea could be to just cut it at the level of the tear. Then take the remaining length of skirt fabric, cut it in half horizontally to make a ruffle and then attach it to the new hem of main body of the dress. I think it would work well with the style, especially if you shorten the sleeves (you could even add ruffles to tthe cuffs with the excess cut off them).

You’re going to find things you want to do differently so it’s better to have a canvas that you don’t care as much about. My first visible mending a pair of socks. One of them ended up, looking like spaghetti and meatballs, which is hilarious, but not something I’d want for one of my favourite sweaters. 3:29

Idea for the green dress (which is stunning btw): commit to the slit and add a bow to the top where the horizontal rip is. You'd have to make sure it was firmly on the thigh though, not sure a crotch bow is the vibe 😅. Also can confirm darning is very doable! I can't quite see the quality of the knit, but it might be an idea to needle felt afterwards to blend the repair in with the smooth, fuzzy, fine stitches (if that's actually what it's like).

I have a coat pattern I need to cut out. For the lining I bought black cotton thermal fabric. I think the shiny stuff is more common (especially in sleeves and pockets) but I wanted to prioritize warmth. For the green dress I would close the rip with a patch on the back, reinforcing with fern leaf embroidery along it. Patches can be iron in, like interfacing (would recommend natural fiber) or just another piece of fabric but you would have to sew that in of course.

My 3 goals are: 1. Any clothes I add to my closet have to be 100% natural fiber (I’m including viscose in this) with the exception of socks which need nylon or spandex to function. 2. I’m thrifting first. As in, I try to find what I need secondhand before I look at new clothing. 3. Try to learn a skill to make a clothes I actually like and wear on a daily basis: basically knitting sweaters and sewing tailored trousers. I can sew a little sundress no problem, but I rarely wear them. I need to sew things that are actually practical for my life.

And I found that I ''need'' less, because of what I have is comfortable and meets my lifestyle. With some help I 3d-scanned myself and sent the scan to a styrofoam-model-company. Now I have a replica of all my curves and I can wrap ''myself'' in the best fitted (adjusted) patterns

I’m digitally cataloging my wardrobe on an app. I find it much easier to create outfits I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise. It also makes my wardrobe far more visible as I’m not forgetting about stuff in drawers or on shelves.

Loved this! 💕 I have been sewing since I was a teenager but stopped a couple of years ago when work and other life things took over my time. However, I've had to return to it in the last few weeks as I'm 3 months pregnant and my normal wardrobe is slowly no longer fitting - I've treated myself to some new stretch fabric and have decided to sew my own maternity wardrobe but to make pieces that I'll still be able to wear once I no longer have a bump! Wrap dresses / tops, empire waists, Stretch dungarees and ruched side seams are going to become my bread and butter this year :D Happy stitching Leena! xx

I've started knitting in November last year and I really want to continue to learn and knit my first clothes. I finished my first scarf recently (I think I'll frog it and try again) and am currently working on a hat. I love seeing how I've gotten better already and I'm motivated to continue learning. It seriously feels good to get active and make something myself.

That Kate Sekules book is SUCH a good read! :D :D :D I loved it so much! On a related note, if you would like a practical and inspirational book about mending; I think Modern Mending by Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald is the best in my collection of mending books. It has more techniques than all the others and at the same time it stays approachable and fun. Enjoy your mending rabbit hole!

Fun fact, once upon a time you could study in my (back then textile fabricating) town to become a professional darning craftsman. Kunststopfer/in (german for artisan of darning) was a career option! So fascinating and makes sense to repair textiles!

Hi Leena! I've started a sewing YT channel that's pretty inspired by you. I'm planning to make a lot of mending content to rebel against the poor quality of clothes these days. Anyway I just wanted to give you an idea for the green dress. Since you want to do embroidery, you can use a light weight fusible interfacing to give more structure underneath the rip, then embroidering on top of that to cover any interfacing that might show on the right side. A leaf/floral pattern would be absolutely lovely!

I vote Brigitta or Gretl for the Von Trapp outfits! Also, you can always think about making something like a tote bag for the beautiful purple fabric. Something that is not fit dependent, so you can wear it with multiple outfits no matter how your body changes,as it’s such a favorite fabric. You could also shorten the green dress at the rip and use the leftover fabric for another project, though I also love visible mending. You could also cut out shapes from another light fabric and sew them to the dress over the rip and across the rest of the dress, creating your own pattern on the dress. Just musings ❤

I can 10/10 recommend any and all of Jessie Mae Designs patterns! I just made the Mini Mock Neck Tank as a sample knit for a lovely indie dyer and it was a dream, plus all of the patterns of hers I've made so far are a) very size inclusive and b) contain a bunch of guidance for modifying the pattern to suit your body! Such an amazing pattern designer and very beginner friendly 🎉

another recommendation here! I made the ripple bralette in a yellow cotton yarn and I adooooore it. the sizings are incredible and they're such easy pieces to modify for length, etc. to make longer or shorter to suit.

for the green dress it would be so cute to sew the rip up and embroider flowers up the dress all around so it looks like youre always standing in a meadow of native flowers😊

I made the Miri jumpsuit and had some fit issues, and I love a jumpsuit. Can I recommend lengthening the bodice at least an inch, and check the size of the thighs as it was a bit tight on mine. Additionally, I found the ties a lot shorter than I wanted them to be, if you lengthening them you will have more tie options. I believe in you but wish I had heard that advice before I messed up with my lovely crepe fabric 😢

for the green dress: make it a real slit and edge it off with a nice lace/woven ribbon, or close it up stitching/mending and paste a big lace applique over it.

For the green dress I have a wild idea that I’m not sure about. Cut a few more slits up in there and insert different coloured gores to make the skirt more voluminous and funky?

For the green dress it could be cool to cut the skirt at the height of the tear, insert some trim (lace, contract color solid, etc.) and reattach the rest of the skirt that is salvageable. That way you get to keep the length and add some more visual interest.

The fabric you really like looks like a Nerida Hansen fabric. It's an Australian brand but you can find them in other fabric retailers. Just in case you need more of it... ;) I have made the Tudor blouse and it's a great pattern. The full wrap option uses quite a lot of fabric, if I remember correctly, but the back wrap and the button-up versions don't require much.

I came to this comment thread to say exactly this!! I think that is the Nerida Hansen fabric and if not, it is extraordinarily close. It’s still being sold all over Australia right now if you can stomach the shipping costs, Leena.

Not sure if you’ll see this but I think that lime green dress would look fab with a triangle shaped bold patterned panel if you don’t mind sewing up the spilt (sorry I’m not aware of the technical sewing terms). But think like 60s/70s psychedelics floral! If you can get a colour that works with that dress.
