CUT LIST (to build one post)
1x8x8 pine. 4pcs
2x8x8 pine 1pcs. (for ripping corner pieces)
1x6x6 pine. 2pcs
2" countersinking wood screws. 50
1 3/8" 23 guage headless pin nails. 4 sleeves
Small bottle of carpenters glue
150 and 220 grit pad sanding pads. 1 each
Notes:
If post is above 8' replace the first two items with whatever length you need for the height of the post required. All the other items and amounts are the same.

What I wouldn't give to go back in time and had you as a mentor to oversee my parents house being built. Lol! ^ *Long sentence alert* The house I grew up in was poorly built with so many mistakes. Now 30 years later...it's so bad and far behind that it breaks my heart. I have studied small projects to fix little things. Should've went with what I wanted and studied carpentry in school. That Accoya wood is really nice. Question? - How does it hold up to insects and will it cup in the Sun? It looks great because you pay attention to the details. It makes all the difference. Excellent job 👍

two things your nailbags say you have put in your time to be a pro 2nd your hands say you don't work in the field 40 plus hours a week anymore.started my own thing and put in more hours than ever before.everyone wants me to start a channel .a camera and computer are tools i have never mastered .i bust a phone 5 -6 times a year .nice to see great carpenter work on the little breaks i get. maybe when i retire i can set up camera thing in the shop.. untill then brother spin them blades but keep all ten !

Nice job. We did something similar but used cedar boards and nailed directly to original posts then stained them. Hopefully they hold up to the elements.

I love how men put up a panel of wood against another piece of wood and then proceed to hold it in place with 100 screws and shoot 2000 nails in to make sure that sucker ain’t going nowhere! 😅

Thanks for your feedback. Yes the corners are the accoya wood as well. We stained the corners the same as the rest of the post.

thanks for your kind words. Yes we had our boards cut to exactly 8". You can go narrower if you like. We were only maxing out our material

Those turned out great! I am about to start my project. And curious what stain and finish u used? I am wanting to do a darker stain like yours and hv tested a few different types of stains but still hv not found the right that I want. But your me is really darn close to what I’m looking for !! Can U give me name of stain? Looks a touch lighter than the ebony stain that I’ve tested. Great work!! Thx for any info!!

We did a custom colour. Most of the time we use a minwax stain with a polyurethane exterior grade semi gloss finish.

I had the corners cut at the shop before when we picked up the wood. You can see the corners get ripped in the video. This all can be done on an on site table saw.

Awesome stuff. So the base trim on the bottom looks like the 1x6. The top base trim looks shorter height wise, did you cut the top base to less than the 1x6? If so what height were they cut to? I’m referring to the column base you cut at 45 degrees and nailed over the long corner trim pieces. Thanks again. I’m inspired 👍🏼

I use the rule of 3rds. Top base is 2/3 the height as the top. Whatever height you use, try this rule. I always stand back and look after tacking on a couple pieces first. Best of luck with your project!

Well Crafted! Did you use glue (tightbond) behind base and caps? I’m assembling custom craftsman style wraps using solid Douglass fir base and caps and wonder about glueing these to 2x pine blocked bases. Thanks for any feedback

I'm not picky with glue. Exterior use waterproof wood glue will work.

Check along the base if your posts are soft. Also look for black at the bottom of the post

Minwax is the name of the company. I forget the name of the colour, the customer provided the stain for us.

Were your corner piece boards actually 2x8 or were they 1 1/2 x 7 1/4 because in order to rip the corner pieces it looks like a 2 x 4 isn't big enough??

I started with rough lumber and cut everything down. The finish dimension of the corners need to be square so adjustments will need to be made

I'm going to attempt this very soon. Home Depot sells the corner pieces, any issues with using those? I'm unsure of how to make them without failing miserably.

You can use the pre made corners from a box store for sure. I personally find the edges are softened (rounded off) a little more than I like. I prefer making my own but I totally understand why you are going the route you are.

We have a supplier in our area. Quarter sawn white oak is an amazing product if you can't get Accoya wood.

I live in the Northeast region and I’m having the same issue of finding a lumber yard for Accoya wood. Like the previous viewer inquired where did you get the Accoya wood? I called some places and they do not know what I’m talking about. So sad. Willing to travel to PA, NJ, CT & NY.

This is a Minwax stain with an exterior grade semi-gloss clear polyurethane, sanding between coats.

@@marionbeacham I believe they took the 1x2x8" board and made 3 cuts leaving roughly 4x2x2". Then cut down to 4x1.5x1.5". In the vid you can see the guys at the shop ripping them for him

I made them out of 1.5" material, i cut out all but 3/8" when I ripped the inside of the corner out.

Using standard wood workers glue on the exterior of a structure is completely wrong and will not last more than a year. This is a major flub by this person.
