Dr. Howard Schubiner discusses the link between childhood trauma and pain, as well as the brain's role in creating pain. He highlights the challenges in training healthcare professionals to understand and address mind-body pain. Dr. Schubiner introduces the symptom perception model and explains the process of pain reprocessing therapy. He emphasizes the importance of ruling out structural problems and using the FIT criteria to determine if the pain is functional, inconsistent, and triggered. This conversation explores the revolutionary data on non-structural pain and the importance of transitioning to understanding the emotional piece of chronic pain. It delves into the role of emotional awareness and expression in pain management and the challenges clinicians face in incorporating a mind-body approach. The conversation also highlights the healthcare system challenges and available resources for clinicians and patients. Finally, it discusses the future of mind-body approaches and training opportunities.

I’ll have to try reaching out to him, also. I do have spine problems, autoimmune and fibromyalgia and always wonder if it’s structural, neuroplastic, both, or a lot from my brain. I also found Dr Eleanor Stein on KZfaq. She’s from Canada, a retired psychiatrist who recovered from ME, MCS, and fibromyalgia.

@@cheryl8493 Lots of people have recovering from fibromyalgia and spine problems using these methods. I've read Alan Gordon's book The Way Out and have Dr. Schubiner's book ordered. I've had MEFM (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Fibromyalgia) for 50 years, and after over a year of practicing these methods and doing daily somatic tracking - lots of great videos on KZfaq - I'm beginning to see extraordinary improvements. I already recovered 80% from these and 3 other so-called "incurable" diseases by ignoring the doctors and listening to my body! I was disabled for 20 years, mostly housebound and bedridden, UNTIL I quit the benzos and antidepressant prescribed as standard treatment for the pain and insomnia of fibro, but was told they too were "incurable". By facing the trauma and emotional repression that caused them - I recovered 80% and got my life back! But a series of inescapable stresses caused a relapse - which I'm healing from now. With the help of mind/body work, I hope to heal 100% this time - as so many have, even those who've had it like me for decades! It's exciting, and I wish you well in your journey.

It is the letting go of the anger after imagining f-ing someone up that isn't so easy. The mindbody doesn't believe me when I say I have let it go, the anger is still there.

@@ModernPainPodcast Loved the interview, but too found the music challenging. So many of us with pain issues are highly sensitive people, and easily bothered by jangly music - which is why somatic tracking videos have soothing wave sounds or soft music. Yours was peppy and journalistic, I see the appeal, but too preferred the podcast. Great interview, insightful questions, and many thanks! I'll keep watching. And tell us more about yourself! You had info on Dr. Schubinar but nothing here on your own experience and background.

this is great but some of these assaults on our emotions happen EVERYDAY also imaginary practice of saying what you'd really like to say and get really angry with the people that deserve it we dont get that actual opportunity so that imaginary thing isn't very satisfying anonymous letter writing can be good or when you dont have anything to lose write a scathing letter to that awful person. as for pain perpetrated on others people who were victims it can be very upsetting to live with that the injustices. and finally most people do not want to be sat down face to face eye to eye and tell others how they have been unfair or rude or mean or cruel. Few people would go along with that. All this said it was a wonderful discussion thank you!

Our health care system is so F ed up in bed with shitty insurance companies that a lot of docs who really want to help people do it out of pocket so they don’t’ have to deal with all of it thereby reducing the number of people who can pay for such services. I’m spending savings at 74 to get good folks to do this with me. 🤷‍♀️

I can resonate with the doctor that committed suicide. I have felt that way but I do believe in the mind body approach and have experienced relief from back pain for a good period of time but it is back now with a vengeance and I am really suffering. There are no practitioners where I live. I need help. Where can I get it?
