The USAID Cure Tuberculosis project made significant strides in the Kyrgyz Republic in enhancing TB diagnosis and case detection, treatment, prevention, and policy reform, resulting in improved patient outcomes, strengthened health care systems, and increased community awareness and engagement in TB care.
The project significantly enhanced TB diagnostic capabilities in the country by optimizing laboratory systems, expanding a biomaterials transportation system, and introducing advanced diagnostic technologies and digital tools. These improvements led to more accurate and timely diagnoses, with 98% of sputum samples now delivered to labs within the 72-hour standard. Cure Tuberculosis emphasized patient-centered care through strengthened TB case management with psychosocial patient support, raising the DR-TB treatment success rate from 56% in 2019 to 74% in 2023. It also reformed national TB policies and TB financing, strengthened infection prevention and control in health facilities, and promoted social and behavior change to encourage TB testing and treatment and reduce TB stigma.
