You have mastered the art of grey scale or brown tone - the true basis of a great painting. Your under painting guide/tone will make the overlayment of a simi-transparent color a breeze. As has been said many a time, tone does all the work - but color get all the glory. You have done the hard work, now consider embracing garish - and reap the glory 🙂

Oils are so much about color, slow drying time, and the wonderful fragrance of the paints and thinners.

Carly! I haven’t stopped by your channel in a while, but had to say: as artists, it is WILD how similar our paths are! I was a pastel portrait artist for the last ten years or so. Decided to give oils a go, also. Greatly inspired by the Old Masters as well. But yes, there’s so much chemistry it’s a completely different animal in so many ways . . . At any rate, hang in there!! Some friendly advice: careful when mixing medium into ANY of the “cadmiums” - the dry-time is ABSURD. You’ll be a completely different person by the time you can work on it again (at least if you like to layer and play with glazing like I do)

I hear you 100% on this, I'm creating 90% with charcoal, 10% with oil and feeling similarly, so definitely appreciate you sharing this. Charcoal is so much more intuitive both as a medium but also just only thinking about values, edges, proportions and not having to also add in the never ending world of color knowledge and the intricacies of oil. Excited to follow your progress

You’re gonna be awesome with oils! I just went through the transition myself. My hardest part was not overworking the paint and keep loading the brush with paint so things don’t get muddy (seemed counterintuitive to me to add paint to be less muddy lol). Excited to see your journey 🎉

Hi Carley, from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist learning and a New Yorker expat living abroad). All I can say is... CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Learning not only New mediums and techniques, but constantly evolving and searching for the new is what all great artists have always done (Picasso, Dalí, etc, etc, etc.). And... you are already a very talented artist so I am sure you'll get all your chakras flowing pretty soon and you'll not just control we medium but excel at it!!! Always... Thank you for sharing and letting us all join you in your artistic voyage as well as helping expand our own personal horizons... it's always amazing to learn from others!!! Cheers from Sunny Spain!!! 😁👍😎

What a great joy it is to see you 🎉! You have been missed! Sometimes we just need to get away from our daily routine and go within ourselves as we evolve. I’m impressed with some of the oils that you covered over, I thought they were really good especially for having just started in the medium. Keep at it, I’ve always loved your charcoal art and I’m looking forward to be able to peek over your shoulder as you delve into oil painting. Keep your light shining bright!!

What a wonderful surprise to see a new video from you! So happy that you are well and working well. We had wondered! Welcome back! I'm surprised that you have taken up oils. I would have thought that dry pastels would have been a more natural progression from charcoal and graphite. It will be interesting to follow this journey, too! Change and learning are the lifeblood of art. If I could be so bold -- wear an old shirt over your nice clothes while painting. This stuff will not come out of your clothes!

So exciting for you to transition. Just found your page recently as I’ve started back into creating art after 15 years. Super interested in your courses to dive into charcoal as I’m more of a painter with oil and acrylic. And would love to support a fellow artist. Once you pay for the courses do you always have access to them or is there a time limit?
