Tip: Take a pair of zip ties and tie the gasket on both sides of the pan. This will make sure the gasket will stay in place. Once you have a few bolts in place, cut the zip ties and pull the off.

For other applications, not necessarily automotive, I've seen people recommend things like a small dob of thick, pasty grease at strategic points and use that to stick the gasket to the spot it goes (in this case, stuck to the transmission housing), then put the pan or whatever back on so you don't have to worry about lining the bolt holes on both the gasket and the cover plate at the same time with the risk of damaging the gasket while doing so, but yours definitely seems the better suggestion here. Typically, as long as you don't go crazy with it, this is harmless to the gasket or to the fluid it's trying to seal against.

Great video. One of the first things I do is get the engine trans warm with a quick drive. Then remove the filler bolt and drip stick right above the pan. With the fluid warm, I'll use my drill pump to suck out as much fluid as possible right into a catch pan. Then remove the pan with very little to no spilling of fluid. When time to refill I again use a drill pump to get the new fluid into the trans.

7.5 quarts for drain & fill. Only use Motorcraft LV. Check level while running in park while level. When you first fill it, it will overflow at about 6 quarts, then start it up and put in another 1.5 quarts and check while running. Only use Motorcraft LV

I fabed a long tubed funnel n ran down from the wheel well behind the frame n into the trans. May have to add some after u drive. Keep the skid plate off til. @@briandesjardins728 You just have to get temp up to operating temp of over 190F before the valve opens and will let you flush all the fluid. So tell me this, do you think your Ford dealer drives your truck around to get it to that temp before they pull it in the garage and start the flush? Wishful thinking. They pull it right in after it has been parked outside all morning and immediately start a "flush" when it is about same temp as the outside.

No drain plug in the pan, no dipstick that doesn't require you be a contortionist. just seems crazy. My question is isn't there still old fluid in the lines somewhere when you do this change, doesn't anything else have to be flushed out?

They make it difficult so you won’t ever change the fluid and have to buy a new tranny. It’s all about profit!
@chrisgraham2904
@chrisgraham2904 Жыл бұрын
The 6L80 and 6L90 transmissions are designed to operate under an internal vacuum. This is the reason that the transmission is sealed without a dip stick access. Also, the reason that the fill port should be opened before the pan is loosened and removed. There is a third-party, after market dip stick assembly that can be installed, which seals the dipstick tube at the top of the tube in the engine bay. It sells for about $250 U.S. plus installation, so it's a lot of money to just be able to check the fluid level. A "drain & fill" fluid change only removed about 50% of the fluid from the transmission. Ford does not recommend that these transmissions ever be "flushed" of all the fluid. The tranny holds about 13 liters of oil, so you'll only be draining and refilling about 7 liters. The filter needs to be replaced at every fluid change. The pan gasket is designed to be reusable, so you shouldn't need to buy a new gasket, unless you somehow damaged it during removal of the pan or it previously showed signs of leakage. The final refill level should be checked with the engine hot, but the fill port is very close to the extremely hot catalytic converter, so proceed with caution. Transmission fluid change is a dirty and frustrating DIY job on the driveway, but fairly straight forward if the vehicle is lifted on a hoist, as the vehicle needs to be kept level during the process.

I only realized this after watching a few other videos on 6R80 Tranny Fluid,Filter & Gasket Change/Replacement. As for myself, I just learned something new as I never knew such a gasket existed & can be cleaned with just a cloth ( avoid chemical cleaners that could potentially ruin rubberized Bead & Breaks around Gasket) & then reused.

@@WhiskeyTango68 that's obviously not what the Asian Sensation (Tony Yao) is implying. A drain bolt could be added so that WHEN removing the tranny pan to replace filter, you don't have to balance 1gallon of hot fluid in a tray that's obstructed on both ends (American engineers, lol) There's a drain plug for ENGINE oil, right? We drain engine oil then oil filter. For peeps who are wanting to drain tranny fluid, they WILL do the filter too. Again, makes SENSE to drain the GALLON of hot fluid via plug, before removing the tranny pan.

Do foreign cars have them? I'm pretty sure that you have to take the pan off anyway to do the filter so they figure why bother? They save money on a bolt and Ford makes a lot of trucks. It's not that bad anyway use a large oil pan.

@@yilancio yea well the oil filter is sideways on my coyote engine but they put a nice drip channel and it funnels the oil toward a waiting oil pan below. So my oil changes are still messy with the sideways oil filter. Also you don't pull the pan off a motor when you do an oil change. Theres a difference. The pan is coming of either way, why put a drain plug in? It's still going to be messy. I'm just sayin.

I cut out the quick disconnect portion that was leaking and replaced it with a 2 foot section of high temp hose and clamps. Had no choice but to add new fluid from the highest point of the cooler line. I only added 1 quart because I had no way of knowing how much I lost. Luckily that seem to do the trick and got me home. If the torque converter has a drain plug then yes. It holds about as much as the pan itself, so that's a lot of old fluid in there. I'm about to do mine, and I cross my fingers that there is a drain plug so I don't end up wasting a lot of new fluid to flush out the old.

Hi 2CarPros. Just changed the trans filter/fluid on my 2011 F150 XLT 4x4. The truck ran great prior to me servicing it. I drained out 5.5qts and added 5.5qts of Ford factory LV fluid. It was a fleet truck and fleet serviced and has 160K miles on it. Last filter/fluid was done at 118K. Cycled the shifter from R to D after service several times. The truck doesn't move in R or D. Double checked the dipstick and it show full. No warning lights on the dash either. Any help before I tow it to my local garage?

Why do they not put a drain plug in the automatic transmission oil pan? I know it would not be used often, but it would make the job a lot less messy. Cheap and easy to put the plugs in at the factory while making the pan.

That gasket is reusable you didn't have to put a new one on. Other than that great video. I watched another mechanic remove the transmission oil cooler hose (needs disconnect tool) an turned on the engine until the oil sputtered coming out. That got most of the oil out of the pan.

elgayetas ford says to start with three and a half quarts, it easiest to do that and then starts the vehicle and go through the gears and let it warm up. Then add until you have the correct amount on the dipstick. Last one I did took about 6 quarts but its a pain in the ass if you overfill

How about the fluid in torque converter?
@chrisgraham2904
@chrisgraham2904 Жыл бұрын
Ford recommends that these transmission should NEVER be "flushed"...just "drain & fill". The tranny holds about 13 liters of fluid, but you'll only be draining and replacing about 7.5 liters. Fluid remains in the torque converter during the drain and it will mix with the new fluid during operation. So, your only really 50% cleaning the transmission, but you also have to do the filter at every change.

@Mayamax3
@Mayamax3 4 жыл бұрын
If you purchased the vehicle new, change the filter at 30,000 miles & every 50,000 after that. The Ford recommended interval is way too long. It's much cheaper in the long run to change it out early.

@davey3765
@davey3765 5 жыл бұрын
Your transmission will last longer, bad oil will make the transmission shudder when shifting. If you tow a lot you probably want to do this sooner if you dont know if its ever been done before. Just check the dipstick - how clear is the fluid? Is it a dark grey or have a dark cast to it? Probably time to change it. I think it lasts something like 60,000 miles in-between changes. New trucks usually get it changed the first time early (like around the 3rd or 4th oil change) as the transmission is breaking in and produces a lot of excess metal dust/micro shavings (this is normal).
