We have hundreds of them in our large pond in France. I catch them in baited traps, purge them and dispatch them by pulling their central tail flap out which also pulls out their trails. In Somerset years ago I used to collect them in a stream when they were hiding under rocks during moulting. On the BBQ they were great tasting whole - just like soft shell crabs.

Sounds awesom! Do you think that France and Europe overall are worse off with the presence of the North American Pacific Northwest Signal Crayfish? In general , what is a fully grown Signal Crayfish size in France?

These crayfish feed primarily at night, so traps should be left overnight for best results. The best baits are also fish based, a cheap tin from a supermarket, with the lid partly opened is ideal.

@@pastailike4021 Applied on a couple of occasions and they aren't issuing licences where I live (East Mids - River Soar). Allegedly, the main predators for them are the larger males (highly cannibalistic) - and they're the main catch - so that's why they won't allow me to do it.

The hole in the trap seems to exceed the legal size for the UK Crayfish traps and it is also illegal to transport live Crayfish from the water source to somewhere else due to the risk of potentially spreading the spores of the Crayfish plague. You have dispatch them on site and cook them there

Hi I found your video hoping to do some trapping however I was revoked the license here in the UK. I'm in the northwest. I asked why and the response I got was I quote "It is against the crayfish byelaws to use traps for non-native crayfish for the purposes of personal consumption". Did you experience this, id thought they wouldn't care along as they was dead. Resulting in a revoked licence and no tags
@mrdaveofdaveshire4047
@mrdaveofdaveshire4047 Жыл бұрын
Ive just been denied a license to trap signal crayfish also. Apparently the use of traps, even for signal crayfish is illegal in the entirety of Yorkshire. If used for personal consumption. I can still reapply however and use them if they are satisfied I'm using them to conduct scientific research. Which is then deemed legal.

@@mrdaveofdaveshire4047 yeah I'm going to wait a month before reapply but I'm going to apply under fishery management. Its dumb because its illegal to put them back of caught but then they won't let me go catch them =/ id advice applying under fishery management, pretty sure not many fishery will say no if your sensible ofcourse. Awesome..how do you know if the river is clean or if the crayfish are clean enough to consume?
@SelfSufficientHub
@SelfSufficientHub 3 жыл бұрын
Well with regards to the river, I would suggest using all the usual common sense decisions as with any type of fishing or foraging, in this case the river is fairly near the source and with no industrialised areas between me and the source. The crayfish themselves get purged in clean water so they pass anything they may have eaten that I wouldn’t want to. Much like any kind of hunting, fishing or trapping, there are precedents that tell us what animals are safe to consume and crayfish certainly are one of those. 😊

Does anyone know if signal crayfish can transmit the hepatitis a virus to humans (when we consume them)? I know that if you're unlucky, you can catch it from commercially produced and retailed mussels (from the sea) and with lots of info lately about our waterways in the UK being deluged with sewage overflows, principally because of irresponsible water companies. It made me wonder if the same was true with crayfish?
