I like this far more than the expensive dust deputy version because with a trash can you can hold a lot more with less trips to the dumpster! And especially because it’s easy to transport from tool to tool. I might need an actual cart because my massive vacuum gets stuck on my uneven concrete floor but this really makes a fast and cheap solution. It’s been too cold in my area to safely run the table saw outside so I’ve been stuck inside and wishing I’d had a way to connect to the table saw plus a container for all the massive chips. My garage is so dusty and even with my mask on I cough from all the fine shit in the air. Anyways nice job and thrilled to see a faster, better solution than some of the others that require shipping in, etc.

Nice work. Thanks for the idea. Just a thought, when you opened the trashcan, the inbound nozzle iss facing the handle of the trashcan. I'd bet that if you adjust it so it aims past the handle, there would be a lot less sawdust in the vacuum.

Hey there...I I came from your Bauer planer video comments and I said I would check out this dust collector system. I tried something similar to this a couple of years ago. I bought one of those Cyclone funnels and attached it to the top of a trash can like what you have. When I turned on my 16 Gal Ridgid shop Vac, the trash can's sides got sucked way in, and all but collapsing the trash can..wow..!! I put some wood cross bracing inside the trash can and it still sucked in around the cross bracing. Darn...apparently my 16 Gal. vac is just too strong....so you are correct...the shop vac doesn't necessarily have to be a great big powerful one. Now if I had a heavy duty container like those blue ones, or if I made my own plywood container...(wouldn't necessarily have to be round...I think)...then I could use my shop vac. And definitely...I don't have a big budget and need to keep costs down. I also must make a fine dust filter set up...should have done it years ago. I have seen many YT guys taking a simple box fan and basically putting a filter of some type on the intake side. I do a lot of sanding so I really...really...need to solve that problem. Thanks for your video...you are a family man and seem to really enjoy and love your family. That is fantastic...!!

These types of dust collection is fine. I made one similar and does well yet there are improvements that can be made that reduces the amount collected in the vacuum. Oneida (a bit spendy), makes a system that, the head alone, is awesome. But that all depends on what you are after, alot, a little, or cheap as can be. But then how often are you cleaning the vac filter?

That's not exactly how that works. The stuff that gets by the collector is likely going to get by the next collector as well. Its the size of particle that has a 50/50 chance of getting collected or passed through. Added more will just decrease your airflow.

I have a 20’ hose so all of it just stay in the corner of my shop I all so have a Christmas tree light remote box to turn it on it clips to my belt when I am in the shop working and I just put the hose on my tool and hit the remote then the power on the tool I plan to make a pvc system and just have open the vac gate at the tool no more hose to trip on.

@lastchancecris
@lastchancecris 5 жыл бұрын
I noticed your filter was still full, you have to be loosing suction as you carry along with your project. I understand the concept of the garbage can but shouldn’t it be eliminating majority of the fine dust that clogs the filter in order to be productive ? In my opinion if it don’t keep the filter from filling and essentially loosing suction it’s a waste of $40 because all your doing is separating the large from small dust.
@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman
@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman 5 жыл бұрын
No suction lost and honestly it’s too powerful for a normal trash can! It’s job is to collect the shaving and separate dust so it did it’s job as intended. Thanks for watching!! I recommend buying a 50 gallon food grade barrel with a removable lid..... those don’t collapse from the suction!
@lastchancecris
@lastchancecris 5 жыл бұрын
If you say so but from my experience and every other persons experience we lose suction from fine dust blocking the filter which this machine collected on your filter. You may not have lost suction due to only shaving a single 2x4 but over time as you are continuing you will lose suction. The point of a dust collector is to stop the dust before it gets to the filter. I can tell you I can run my shop vac with my planer, jointer, mitre saw, table saw, and bandsaw and get less then a tablespoon worth of dust on my filter with my Oneida on a 5 gallon bucket. I watch these videos to try and improve what I have but this system just don’t separate the dust from the filter like it should. Try sticking a board or something in the can above the inlet hose with a hole in the center to stop the dust from spinning up the barrel into the vac hose. I believe it will help keep the fine dust away from your vacuum.

I assume the lesson learned on the three minutes talking head intro...anough said. The second issue, you need in a 'Show-n-Tell' to show all of the parts in the project. It would have been helpful to see the Vac inside and the filter before you planed the wood, always good to have a before and after comparison. I enjoyed the idea behind your project. I want to thank you for your efforts and best of luck in future projects.

This is a great idea until you find out the trash can lid you have won’t support the pvc and connections thereby not keeping them upright. It was just too heavy for what seems like a flimsy lid. Trash can same size and from Lowe’s though I suspect there may be regional differences in products for sale. So either I trash this - no pun intended - or I test the strength of the next trash can lid before I buy another can.

As for the commentators that are knocking the simplistic idea, tell them to suck their own dust with those high dollar cyclones. Myself as a Garage Hobbyist this will work fine until someone wants unless give me for Christmas. Yes I've seen several that have made homemade cyclones, but they are just as effective as yours.

already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). kzfaq.infoUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.

That's not working well. You might want to move the inlet pipe closer to the wall of the trash can and angle it down just a little to create the swirling of the dust so it goes to the bottom. The way you have it here, a lot of the dust is getting sucked up. My guess is that as the dust comes in, the way that it's positioned is throwing it right into the pickup. If you are picking up fine dust that is not as heavy as what you did here the problem will become much worse. I made one out of two buckets and I can use it all day with almost no dust in my vacuum. Lastly, using a good filter (can't remember what they are called right now) will increase the suction a lot. Good luck.
