Tim I think you took a completely logical and reasonable approach to this. I can see that you are very thorough in what you do. By the way I really like the direction you are going with your channel. I think there is a bigger market of viewers to be had if you continue to broaden your horizons beyond Deere.

I agree. I enjoy watching your channel since you use a very simplistic view but an educated view of how to do every episode. Having a great camera person like you have always helps. I also think you should broaden your horizon and discuss more about other tractors and maybe do a comparison of the good, the bad, and the in between for each model currently on the market and what was on the market ten to 15 years ago. The cost of tractors keeps going up but the demands of users also is going up.

Great topic! Let me add my own experience buying used. I bought a house in the country 5 years ago and my new neighbor gave me his old 1970 Deere 110. It ran and cut great, but it was painful to use because it had no power steering, terrible turning radius, and got stuck in the soggy ground on a regular basis. Therefore, I started shopping for a newer 4x4 Deere to replace it. That's when I found a 2007 X728 with 470 hours and it came with a 54" snow blade, front quick hitch, and 1,500 lb. dump cart for $6,900. After I got it home, I noticed hydraulic oil dripping from one of the quick connects. I got worried, but found a parts diagram, bought a bag of o-rings, and (luckily) that's all that was wrong. Since then, I've only had to do regular maintenance on the machine (oil changes, etc.), and nothing major. I love it so much that I actually added a 45 Loader to it last summer for another $3,300 and both have already paid for themselves with the amount of work I've finally been able to get done with my own equipment. For the $10-11K that I have into the machine and attachments, I'm thrilled and never would have been able to buy new for anywhere near that price.

Going through a used tractor like you did gives use the ability to put together a check list of what to look for before we go out and look. bought a used 2019 1025r with a loader, toothbar, and bushhog in 2020 for 12k. it had 32 hours. person wanted out of the payments.

Interesting.... Getting all the stuff working again on my 1968 Ford was less than getting that New Holland going. Oh, and mine is a 67hp Class 2 3PH. Then again, I don't have a mower deck. Some times when shopping for a used machine, it pays to take your time and see a lot of machines. Also, do a little bit of research on the specific model you are going to look at so that you know what to look for. What is cheap to fix, and what you NEVER want to have to deal with. It's also good to know what the owner used the machine for. In my case, the tractor spent 40+ years doing mostly Hay work. That gives you a perspective in what would be considered normal wear and what is damage. Another great question is "Why are you selling?" In my case, the farmer bought a new cab tractor for the Hay work and had a smaller tractor for the chores. Mine was pretty much just sitting in the barn as a backup. It did have issues, but nothing that was a big deal. I did find some others as I've used it, but again, all of the issues were due to age, not damage. Seals, hoses, etc. Sadly, I think a lot of buyers jump in without a lot of knowledge. That can certainly be a very painful error.

Christopher, I bought my 2008 Case 24DXe without much knowledge of small tractors. I was entranced by the low price ($8K) and the low number of hours (200). It didn't have the mower nor the backhoe I thought I wanted. But it came with a FEL, a two gang (?) disc [8 discs mounted on 4 axles] plus a box blade. It has worked very well for the purposes I bought it for but now I've pretty well completed all the tasks I had planned to do so I'm working to get it ready to sell.

You covered all the points it's cool u showed how much potential cost could be involved that's why I went with a new koiti compact before prices went crazy luckily but I've seen tractor with over 1000 hrs that didn't have that many small issues just comes down to who owned it and how they cared for it

Great video Tim, I am glad when I was debating between new and used I was able to go new to avoid some of these issues. Just could not see saving a couple of thousand dollars over a new one was worth it. This video proved it would not take a lot of repairs to make up that difference.

I've seen lifts similar to Tim's priced in the under $4,000 range. I wouldn't mind having one, but I manage very well with the tools I have and the ramps I use for my truck.

i put a switch just like that one on my garden tractor to run my sprayer, i assume they had a dc powered cart sprayer or something similar. pto sprayers are unnecessarily expensive if you're only doing 5 foot or so. Maybe if you're doing a huge boom they make sense. Thanks for the video, very relevant for me.

I looked at used before I bought my new Kubotas everything was beat to death. 20 years later my machines still run and look like new and always garaged. You can still find some well maintained machines but they are hard to find. Nice informational video.

Good used tractor review... I'd pick up the tractor from the frame, as to check the wheel tightness, and that front axle pivot point. Oh yeah so much to look for underneath... I manufactured an ole pickup bed liner which works great belly protection front to back.

Tim another great video and right on because it doesn’t matter what brand of tractor your looking at and if they have not been taken care of and or abused and if you want it to look good and run good it’s going to be expensive to fix and even more so if you can’t do the work you’re self. I got very lucky when I bought my tractor it’s a NH tc35d and it had low hours on it. I bought it from a older lady that her husband had passed away a year before and was very well taken care of in fact they called it there baby they used it mostly for snow removal and had a very nice front mounted blower that they cleared they’re paved driveway with and then parked it in the heated attached garage and had all the receipts from day one of everything they had done to the tractor including every year the complete service of every oil and filter and anything else that needed to be done by the dealer service that came to they’re house and did the work. The first thing I did when I got it home was wash the dust off and wax it. My wife thinks I’m nuts

Great video. It’s very hard to find used tractors from private sellers at a price that actually reflects the cost of making them right again. Cosmetics are part of that factor. A hood may not effect function, but the cosmetics need to be decent to get full retail value. I was looking at one add this morning where the seller was honest enough to list several issues including a key broken in the ignition, but ‘it starts fine with a screwdriver’ and they wanted full used retail value. It would be funny if you reviewed the basket case I just picked up. Returning it to service would make zero sense if i hadn’t been able to sell a couple attachments to start with a positive balance on the transaction. If I wasn’t in a lull between seasons I wouldn’t have the time to even attempt this.

I bought a small tractor to start off with, 5yrs later got the cab tractor I couldn't afford the 1st time. Looked at new and used both times. Still bought new because of price. Used was not much less than new, plus 0% on new. Glad you do these reviews, very helpful, thanks and keep up the great work.

Outstanding overview of that tractor. One of the things I don’t think most folks know is where all the grease points are. I owned my tractor a couple years and found a few that weren’t really noticeable. Great job 👍

Tim, great job explaining all of the in's and outs of what to look for. I was surprised when you said not to take out the air filter unless you are going to replace it or something to that effect. I have a Kubota 3301l series and live in the high desert where we get a lot of dust storms. I often take the filter off to see how dirty it is. I will also often clean the filter with low bursts of air from my air compressor to clean the filter before placing it back on the tractor. New air filters cost a lot of money and this helps to preserve your filter a few months longer. Just make sure you don't blow the dirt inside the filter when cleaning it. Keep up the good work!

I live in New Mexico where dust storms are the same as rain storms in Washington St. I do the same for my air filters. Keeps them working a lot longer, but like you, I blow them out from the inside but with just enough pressure. The dust at my place is finer than talc.

Nice video Tim very well put together as well. I would also like to add for your viewers to consider as well sometimes when replacing these parts you may need some specialty tools, this can drive up some of these repairs. Point in fact on Holly the tie rod ends they look as though you can remove with a standard wrenches but you can not. You need a skinny wrench to get down into the space on one side to hold it while you turn the tie rod to remove it from the tractor. I was going to do my own because one of my boots failed and my dealer was willing to give me the part to replace myself. This is when covid 1st started and everything was crazy, so I tried to do but soon realized I couldn't get it off without the tool or to grind down a wrench. I ended up letting the dealer do it. They actually had to order the tool since it was their first one too. But again if you can get the tractor at the right price it could be worth the time and effort again as you said Tim it takes the right kind of person.

Great video Tim. Lots of things there I wouldn't have thought to check. There is a good video that Good Works Tractors did on plastic vs metal hoods (Feb 16). If you have a hood with a dent like the New Holland, you might just be able to pound it out.

:) been buying used tractors etc to fix and keep or sell for decades.Rules to follow: Ran when parked.Run away. Well it runs but starter got stolen. Run away Been in my family forever: don't pay any attention to the auction number..... That leak JUST started..... Don't worry about the foam in the radiator: they all do that There was fumes blowing out and a drip down here so that's why you see the rag stuffed into that hose/pipe(crankcase vent system.....) I know it looks rough but I NEVER abused it..... I use starting fluid all the time. Just like to use it...... Now what I found on field inspections: 90 weight gear oil in the crankcase No leaks says the seller. No oil in the hydraulic system.... New battery. Why is the alternator disconnected (as in wires cut)? Pull the dip stick and soak my arm with oil spray. Ask the seller how long it's had blowby. Crickets chirping in the background.... Super glue to "try" to glue weather checked/split tires... Too much more to list. Biggest liars on the planet? Farmers by a country mile.Goes back to selling a dry cow or bad mule days.....

Tim! As far as checking out loaders........ One of the items to check on a "well used" loader, pivot pins on a pin on bucket can develop a lot of wear(slop) in the guides for the pins, and most brands do not have replaceable bushings for these pins! It mainly matters if you need finer control in the pitch of the bucket! Food for thought!

Another thing to look at with a used 4WD tractor is the front end gear oil. Need to make sure it has been changed recently. We bought our used Kubota and didn’t know to check the front end. Turned out the front end gear oil had not been changed and the seals failed taking out bearings and gears. It was a repair that cost us more than $6000.

I got a friend that got a cheap small older Massey Ferguson cheap with a blown front end. So he made his own 2 wheel drive front end and called it good, for what it was worth it wasn't worth hunting for the parts and leaving the tractor unable to use when there's such a cheap resolution and if he was able to get the parts it could very easily have the 4wd front axle put right back in

Like your original Johnny with the rotating seat, the little ball socket stud brake off. I modified it to a larger ball and socket. Now works great. Sometimes it just takes the end user to beef thing up from the manufacturer.

Thanks for the excellent video Tim. Would be interesting to know what the previous owner traded for, if that info was available. Did they go with the same size machine or did they upgrade significantly size wise? Might give clues as to what it was used for and specific wear points to inspect. Always interesting to see how others treat their equipment too. Pretty clear there wasn't much pride of ownership with this tractor, it was treated strictly as a tool to get tasks done. Holly hasn't been loved, so sad!

I am considering private sale used because of sales tax. Doent seem right that the government already collected the tax on the full value at the first sale and then gets to collect it again on resales if the used item is resold by a dealer.

Depends on your states laws...some states will not charge you an equivalent sales tax when trading in...i.e. dealer gives you $10k for trade, new tractor costs $25k, so you only pay sales tax on $15k. Thus giving you a credit for previously paid sales tax.

“Sales tax” It’s not a “new thing tax”. Buy from a Canadian dealer, then you can skip the sales tax, DEF fluid and re-gen emissions hassle.

@@davidparadis490 that would depend on where you claim to reside when you purchase it. “Private use only” or “for export only” are helpful(cheaper).... claims and programs to inquire about, especially if exporting/importing is an option. If selling a unit at discount doesn’t have any risk of coming back and biting them with locals hearing about the price difference, then being scorned about what they had to pay, they can sleep good without worrying. Plus when it’s definitely going out of, and likely forever staying out of their , and their local competitors market, they couldn’t care less if you shopped smart, just another sold unit on the board for them.

Great video, Tim. I've been considering a used tractor. I'm curious if when looking at a unit from an individual if they would appreciate or even allow a stranger to start pulling off covers, filter canisters, etc. But, your video certainly gave me pause as to whether I want a used tractor. I'm grew up on a farm so working on things isn't new to me, but at 67, do I really want to?

Great video. Very thorough explanations. If you can't do the repair work yourself the labor will be at least as much as the parts, doubling the cost for repairs. In South Dakota you will pay sales tax each time the machine is sold, new or used.

Nice video Tim. All the tires on my mt 125 leak and the rears are loaded, so they leak with the ballast box on. Only thing I can do is keep adding air to them as I am having problems with getting the dealer to come and look at it. Also have a mower deck for it and used it only one season and have not used it since. Putting it on is just to much of a pain and the weight of the tractor actually ruins the lawn, so a I just use the old lawn tractor. I so want to love this little tractor but having issues in doing so. Do get me wrong it does a lot for me but dumb little things happen that shouldn't. That's my 2 cents.

Great review! All those issues you pointed out is why I’m skeptical about buying a used tractor! Unless it was a smoking deal but most of the time I see beat up tractors selling for top dollar! Like 15 year old sub compact tractors with 500-1000 hrs and people want $7500 or more! I mean these tractors I’ve looked at are road hard and put away wet kind of rough!

Wow . That person who had the New Holland was a rough operator, you made some very good points on the matter . An hopefully a lot of people learned something in video . With that tractor I think a mechanically inclined person will have to take on that poor tractor an peolpe have to think if it is that rough on the outside what is the insides of the tractor going to be like . hi Tim, thanks for the info, those are great ideas that you shared on buying a used tractor...personal question, are you feeling ok, ive been noticing the last few months video's you havent been your normal self , been figuring your dealing with a health issue of some sorts...i do have a question for you...on your 1025 rear axle, is there a spin on filter for your hydrolic fluid besides just the screen and the long magnet that seems inside the system....? i like the 1025r but that seems to be the question i cant seemed to get answered....please let me know.......also the video from last week on the 4 sets of valves?....can we get that to work on different tractors like the LS or the kioti???thank you in advance for taking the time and letting me know.....

Certainly it's possible for manufacturers to make improvements and upgrades and design etcetera over time but it's also been my experience that they tend to downgrade the quality of materials and design so that products don't last as long as I used to I think that's a very real consideration in something to consider as well because we've seen it happen with all sorts of equipment and appliances etc

I don't think the paint peeling off the transaxle is necessarily an indication that it has gotten hot. My JD 2-series only has 150 hrs on it over a period of 8 years and has never seen hard use at all (don't even mow with it) and the black paint is peeling at various places on the transaxle. I think it has more to do with poor preparation on the aluminum surfaces during the manufacturing/painting process.

Correct Aluminum and galvanized metal are hard to stick paints on. Being aluminum without an etching primer the paint falls off. Most likely they assemble the frame with the transmission on the assembly line before the paint process and it gets painted with the frame

Wow the loader valve for the New Holland is almost 1/2 of the 1025R loader valve. I was told by my local Deere dealer that is where my system was sucking air. Turns out I was right and it was the return line again. That hose clamp keeps working loose on my 2015 1025R. I have to tighten it twice a year. Or it will start dripping on my floor.

Tim you forgot the implements you can get with a new tractor with the 0 % interest and the newer model implement designs. Foe example the swift tack loader in the Kubota and the quick release hydraulic couplers as tractors improve. Thank you for the straightforward approach for buying tractors

In some states you are supposed to pay sales tax even if you buy from an individual. Check your Government Guilt Gauge whether you actually do. BTW, how do you check that the serial number does not have liens or is not stolen? CarFax for tractors?

Stuff adds up quick. Same buying an old 8n etc. Sometimes cheap up front price, too get up to good operating state can be $$$. Sellers almost always never consider this, many times walk away as just not worth it.

Great information/tips on buying a used tractor! That poor NewHolland was seriously neglected/abused as far as I’m concerned. Looks more like 14,000 hours use! Side note: my B2650 came with a 2 stage air filter and does not have a fan underneath but cooler lines in front of the radiator. Not sure about older or other Kubota models. 🙂

Yes. I was mentioning the BX. It is the only true ‘subcompact’ in Kubota’s lineup.

That is not a vibration in the steering wheel , It's a built-in hand messager , standard on every New Holland I've ever been on.

I got my 1023e for 7000$ with 65hrs guy was sell everything and moving to Montana he had a nice f350 for a sweet price as well wish I could have got both.

I have a 125 LS tractor, the steering wheel vibration is evident on mine also from new. The rear lights are on again/ off again. I notice that the front tire wear is not the same on this NH.

An old tractor guy once advised me to take the tractor hours and multiply by 50. His analogy was that a vehicle in normal use averaged 50 miles an hour so a tractor with 100 hours was similar to a pickup with 5000 miles - but your mileage may vary

Tim, I noticed something I thought was odd about the directional signals. The front seems to only have half a lens and the bottom looks like it has corrosion on it. Since I can't get close to it, why does it look that way? Will you be doing a similar video on manual transmission tractors as well?

Thanks Tim, quick question why is it not a good idea to take out the air filter out unless replacing? I assume that’s in case you drop dust / dirt in the intake?

that tractor is wired from the factory for a rear light. the connections are tucked up under the body panel between the fenders

Great topic & great job: I'm always concerned about the covers on the pedals having been missing possibly because they pretty much show the hours on the machine, although I'm pretty sure it just welt on the side of the boot catching on them. Also, when the front end boots are worn this is often a result of overloading on any vehicle, further investigation of the front end for oil seal leaks. Many things to consider.

@@jaxturner7288 As you overload the front end with an overloaded bucket or rough treatment, going too fast hit a bump you can tear boots, cause internal seals to leak or break spindles. Basically you are going past the engineered specs. I look for hydraulic cylinders that don't have the original paint, cylinder collars that have had a pipe wrench used on them all of these can show less than professional repair. Tim was right in that paint is a very strong indicator when it is burned or missing in gear box areas. What Tim is getting at is that with just a simple seat & hood replacement as well as some other parts your at $3k, this is probably less than 10% of a new tractor, combine this with 0% financing it does not take too long to be able to enjoy a new tractor, maintain it well, and keep it in a shed as well as wash it off & it will stay new for many years. This is why parts availability is so important as well as your relationship with your local dealer. The two major tractor mfg's are pretty reliable and dedicated to parts supplies. John Deere has a reputation of never giving up on their tractors, Kubota is very much a well respected mfg. as well. The loaders/backhoes I understand are supplied by aftermarket suppliers and I think this is why we have so many issues with overloaded front ends. Messicks is kind enough to list their inventory qty's on their website, I use this to backwards engineer common issues and plan for future maintenance such as front end repair and will try to anticipate & order replacement parts ahead of the needed repair for and will evaluate at the slow time of the year. So if you see your model and they stock 30 front end seals for one area of the tractor and 3 for another area look for the common repairs, that's your future project. I hope this helps with your search.

@@mattcrom3018 sure....... but overloading alone damaging a tie rod grease boot? Nah, no way ramble man. You tear a tie rod grease boot with physical impact damage or you blow it out with too much grease. The tie rod grease boot is not effected by over loading because it simply has nothing to do with supporting any weight whatsoever. You could blow a grease boot in seconds with grease gun on a new tractor or tear it up in the brush on day one after never lifting a single thing. While you could also overload it daily for years and years until the axle snaps and still never damage the tie rod grease boot.
