I have a HRX217 we use in my commercial company and love it. I agree about taking the carb on and off its a pain. The HRX217HXA was around 800.00 new. The material the deck is called Nexite its the same material used to make football helmets. Honda now gives a lifetime warranty on the deck for residential use only 90 days for commercial use. They are great mowers!!

One way to make Honda carbs easier to work on is to use six mm threaded rods to slide all those gaskets back together. Cut a screwdriver slot in the end of the rods. Now with it assembled, pull one rod and replace bolt and then the other one.. Easy peasy, or at least bearable. My found mower even had a flag style limiter on the idle circuit that I had to grind off to remove the screw to clean the idle circuit. So at least with the threaded rods you don't have the airbox on there to adjust the carb screws. I am pretty sure that they use threaded rods that might work on predator horizontal engines that are possibly the right diameter and hopefully length. On edit , carb mounting studs are 6 mm threads 4.5 inches long for the 6.5 horsepower and if you need longer ones, they are 133 mm long for the 11 and 13 horsepower horizontal engines. These are readily available aftermarket parts

On these Carbs u can pull the spacers out of the air box base then slide them over the carb bolts. This allows you to bolt the carb back down without the air box on so you can adjust it while on the machine running.

I just got one out of the trash down the street the other day. Someone had rigged the recoil starter back on the top and had too much tension on it causing it to seem like the motor was seized up. Loosened it up and the cord/motor came loose. Started right up. Ordered some parts to make it whole again and will probably use it as my main mower now 😂

Bought mine brand new about 6 years ago (HRX217HYA) . Echo the carb comments, and the maintenance needed to keep the rear axle happy is a little un-called for, but for aging guys like me with a complicated lawn to mow, the hydrostatic trans is worth the nuisances. No other mower would be. Nice find!

The easiest way to work on one of those carbs is to let someone else do it. I never had a plastic mower deck but did have an aluminum deck years ago. Unfortunately it cracked and was to expensive to get welded at that time. Thanks for saving a good mower so someone can purchase a nice one at less than new. Great job as usual.

Hondas are a pain I agree, what I do is this, the black part of the airfilter box that covers the carb itself, I very neatly just cut it off makes life so much easier, lining up the gaskets, and plates, and I also take the whole red cover off the top of the engine, to aid in cleaning, and inspect the ignition coil, and flywheel stop mechanism, also so the whole carb is exposed, and cutting off that part of the airfilter box doesn't effect the carb or running at all, and I have never had a complaint either only people who work on them would notice it anyway. Very nice job.
@barrytaylor8452
@barrytaylor8452 Жыл бұрын
If you do try the M6 X 1 bolt trick to hold everything together DO use the 100MM length and NOT the 80MM. Some on other videos have suggested the 80MM, which is the actual size of those two long bolts, and you don't get enough sticking out of the air filter box to make the trick work. I did not have to put any ends on the 100MM length bolts that i got... I could simply turn them out of the block with my fingers. Take one out while holding the air filter tight, then run the factory bolt in snug. That will hold everything in place while you put the other bolt in. I am trying to fix a throw away now and I got it running but it is surging. An amazon carb was about $10.00 and I may try that next. BEST OF LUCK and thanks for your video!!!

Nice save on that not so old mower. Those HRX mowers with the blade clutch are/were crazy expensive. You should be able to get plenty more $$ for your time and trouble if you are willing to wait for the right buyer. For those carbs, I use a pair of M6 threaded rod, 100mm in length (just shy of 4 inches). I cut a slot on one end with a dremel and use a screwdriver to replace the bolts one at a time. Holds that mess of gaskets in order.

Nice job Bob. Those Honda carbs are kind of a pain to work on and they all seem to surge so i always drill that jet out regardless. I use two studs to reassemble the gaskets ,heat shield, plastic spacer, etc, and then i change out the studs one at a time with the bolts. Works pretty good for me. Here in Iowa i would get $185-$200 for that mower with a bagger and shined up. A trash find worked out well for you Bob! 👍💲🇺🇸 Roger

The last price on that mower, new, in Kansas City was $750 plus tax before they discontinued it. Technically, that deck is nylon, which is why it's so tough. I’ve always heard the carb is near impossible to work on. I’ve always just used good fuel and run TruFuel for the first & last use every year. The solution I’d like to see someone come up with is a way to add grease zerks to the rear wheels where the axles go through the bushings in the adjusters. Love my HRX!

No easy way to install and take off the carburetor on these Honda's , I've worked on so many of these . I saved one video too put it back together with all the gaskets in line . Because sometimes I wait so long too work on them I forget that everything has got too go back in a certain order . But LOL after taking them apart so many times you will save a how to video too use when it comes time too work on one . But I'm not afraid now too work on one , have an old Honda - its so old it has a manual choke carburetor on it . My personal Honda trim mower thats over 20 years old . Enjoy your video's .......

In my experience those BBC model mowers don't idle smoothly with the blades disengaged but run fine when they are. So I basically wouldn't adjust anything if it ran that way. Maybe the govenor is set to be smooth under load only.
@doublewide6

I think they are just leaned out for emission standards. I drilled out the low speed jet it really helped. Before drilling, it revved up fine and cut fine but idle was missing.

There are two main issues with engine surging at low speed and not under load. First, pride of getting it right. The just enough guy says "that is good enough", but the mechanic who cares gets it right. Second, when you go to sell it, it is surging. People notice these issues and then start trying to haggle down on price. Nice trash pick and will sell easily in Spring.

As some others have said, use dowels to easily re-insert the carb and its gaskets, etc. Below is your pal Bruce P. with a video (about the 4 min. mark) On the HRX, it's easier if you unbolt the metal control bracket (17:20 in your video) first: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ntt7mJpe1uDbkZ8.html That deck, Nexite, shines up pretty good with a coat of tranny fluid as does the recoil housing, etc. I believe Honda compares Nexite's strength to that of motorcycle crash helmets; very tough. Why not try what you did on a previous video where you retreaded a Honda wheel? Hard to tell on the video, but the hub appears to be Honda. I'd try to get a around $200 (or even more; Walmart sells a cheapo entry level "push" mower for $200) for that great mower at first. It retailed (with tax) at over $900 when new where I live. It has a blade clutch, larger GCV190, and a hydro tranny. For much of the pandemic, the HRX was not even been available at Home Depot; starting to show up lately though.
