I actually got to try poi for the first time last year when I went to visit family there. I didn't hate it but it is definitely has a shocking taste. Sour/bitter from what I can remember. I'll have to keep an eye out for squid luau next time we visit.

⁠@@ryana5435No there is poi on the lunch plate, but the main dish is squid luau. A traditional Hawaiian lunch plate is usually made up of 1-2 main dishes plus poi (sometimes rice) and sides. It looks like he got the squid luau as a main and there’s poi visible in one of the cups.

I knew I wasn’t imagining this! A lot of people are scared by the look of squid luau but I’d say it’s like a Hawaiian version of cream of spinach except with coconut milk instead. I really like it but that’s because I grew up eating it. The taste of poi can also vary depending on how fresh it’s made. It’s a bland starch which is why it’s usually eaten alongside something but it can become lighter in color and more sour the longer it sits and ferments. But if it’s too sour for your liking adding a little white sugar helps to neutralize it.

If it’s just a regular green light however, you can still make the turn but you MUST yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Sometimes, there is so much oncoming traffic that you won’t get an opportunity to turn until your light goes yellow.

Hawaii was an independent sovereign kingdom before the US walked in and took it over to end up becoming the 50th state. The british never colonized it. They did briefly occupy it but the monarch y was restored within the same year.

Hawai'i had excellent relations with the British, to the point where the later Hawaiian kingdom was modeled after Britain's. The Union Jack is even on our state flag! Either way, you got the right idea!
