Only movies I consider disturbing and depraved are the obvious ones like... A Serbian Film Cannibal Holocaust The ones that I dont think you would be able to stomach are... The August Underground (the whole trilogy) Guinea Pig (the whole collection) Nekromantic An honourable mention from our little country, Britain...called Mum and Dad. That one doesn't get enough love. Don't get mixed up with the American one.

Kudos for featuring "Boxing Helena." ! It seemed to be part of a string of disturbing "body horror" films of the early-mid '90's: " Killing Zoe," "The Doom Generation," "7", "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein", and to a degree "The Crying Game." All had the same bleak, industrial lighting and disturbing imagery. Solid vid.

I never see anyone mention Mysterious Skin with JGL. It is extremely well done, and I don’t know if I could ever watch it again. A young boy is obsessed with alien abductions, believing he was a victim. Another boy struggles with drugs and begins hustling. When their paths cross, the tragic event that links them is reviled. I haven’t watched it since the days of Netflix by mail, but it still lives in my head.

Great film!! Omg - great cast, acting, film work. I miss the old IFC days. But this movie is NOT A HORROR MOVIE. there is an important distinction between gritty, human based, existential coming of age storytelling, and HORROR. Again - I LOVE this movie, but it's not horror. You need to learn the difference. Let me give u a quick walk-through: John Milton, Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert W Chambers, Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell, George A Romero, John Carpenter, Stuart Gordon, Victor Miller, Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, William Friedken, David Cronenberg, Clive Barker, Don Coscarelli, Ari Aster, etc...these are different than Stanely Cubrik or Martin Scorsese, or Howard storm.

Man Bites Dog was a pretty disturbing movie that doesn't get mentioned much. Its portrayal of the socio/psychopathic main character is chilling. Not exactly a horror movie but scary when you think about people who are this way in the and worse real world. And it was one of the earlier movies I can think of that popularized the "found footage" style of filmmaking.

I had The Treatment on my list for awhile and after seeing your recent video I finally watched it tonight. Great dark thriller. Very impressed. Great recommendation! It's hard to find these types of dark neo-noir/detective/psychological thrillers in the vein of Seven, Silence of the Lambs, Antibodies, Girl with the D.T. etc. that aren't predictable or sloppy and poorly executed. And as you've mentioned, this one doesn't necessarily do anything totally special or revolutionary, but it's just very well done, balanced and tightly written. Thanks again Emma.

Ema thanks for this lists. They are rare yet necessary.. there are times and people that do need this lists. It’s so easy at times to go through life as a zombie pretending to not see any of the wrong around us and it’s a waste of a life, it is helpful at times to be disturbed in order to find our own solutions and in the best case consciously help ourselves and those around us to become better people. At least this films have a potential message, don’t be nor feed the sickness of humanity

Boxing Helena was a milestone for me in the 90s . First I love Julian Sands, and Sherilyn Fenn was really popular at the time. It's a movie that always stayed in my mind and forged , with some other movies, my cinematic tastes, aesthetic. The movie that disturbed me the most and troubled me for a long time, and still now is Grim Love. It's based on a real story and knowing that it is just shocking and terribly sad too. I love your disturbing movie recommendations! I watched Dogtooth after it was in one of your videos and it was awesome. How about LITTLE SWEETHEART from like 1989?

You're the only person I've ever heard talk about boxing Helena. I only watched it because I had a high school crush on Julian sands from the warlock movies. Watching it was quite a time.

Thank you for the video! I've actually watched and rewatched 3096 Days. Disturbing yes, but it's a great movie.

I watched Heaven Knows What twice and I couldn’t describe why… my partner was like “it’s so upsetting what are you doing why?” I was so impressed with the actress and the honesty even though I was horrified. If you’ve had manipulative loved ones it really captures that existence.

I have seen Boxing Helena, and even though it was a long time ago, I remember a lot of details really well. "I'm going to the club!" Paxton was always the best at playing assholes. So you're right, it's pretty memorable!

I remember when Boxing Helena came out and it still messes with my head. It reminded me of how I felt about BLUE Velvet (also a Lynch film) the tension makes one feel is so uncomfortable.

One of the more disturbing films I’ve seen is the Finnish film Dogs Don’t Wear Pants. It covers lots of taboo subjects. You feel sad and embarrassed for the main character, but then also you can sympathize with him in a weird dark corner of your mind.

OMG !!!! Boxing Helena !!!! I saw this movie so long ago (when I was a teenager... I know!) and it really stuck with me for a long time. I've never seen it again since but I think I'll try to watch it again! (Thanks?!) for the memories! ahah

The Treatment is a sequel written by British author Mo Hayder & the book is even more disturbing. The first novel Birdman is even more disturbing. There are 7 books in the Jack Caffery series. Unfortunately Mo Hayder died from ALS. Interesting fact: Mo Hayder was briefly an actress back in the 80s, including being one of Benny Hill’s, Hill's Angels.

Thanks for the list, Emma! I saw Miss Violence in the cinema when it first came out and I was not prepared for the total darkness of the story. I was with a friend, and I hade to leave with her before the end because she found it too hard to watch. I still think it was a good film, but I probably wouldn't recommend it if you don't know the theme beforehand.

Emma, the movies that I found to be disturbing to a certain degree (minus that they are not on this list) are Robert Egger’s The Witch, Nosferatu from 1922, David Cronenberg’s The Fly, the 2016 CGI anime film Gantz O, Gone Girl (even though it’s a mystery thriller), Silence of the Lambs, Play Misty For Me (the first movie that Clint Eastwood directed), Batman: The Killing Joke, Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My Summer Vacation (disturbing in a comedy like manner), and No Country For Old Men.
