Hack #3 may be the most important. I used to take the game so seriously until my mom got very ill and passed away. After that my perspective changed. It took so much pressure off when playing when I was going in with the "this is not life or death" attitude. Thanks for making this video Trav.

Thanks Trav. These tips are great. Some I am already using, some are new. I would love to see a short video of your dynamic warm up. I use some of these moves, but am curious what works for you. I started recording my games using a Hero 5 last year mounted behind the net and found lots of great material to work on. I liked your idea of a camera mounted to pucks.

Being able to handle the puck smart is way more important than going for the long pass or the empty net. If you can stop dump ins, make short passes to your guys, help out on the PK that’s huge. If you’re trying to stand out from other guys during tryouts/ in general that’s huge. You have no idea how much the players appreciate an active puck handling goalie until they don’t have one. Also, one thing that’s not touched on nearly enough is talking to your players. Being able to communicate what’s going on when there’s a race to a puck in your zone could be the difference between a breakout or a goal. Same with when a penalty is almost up. Great tips/ hacks man!

Skating is absolutely essential.I played beginning in the pre-Orr era, when hockey in New England absolutely exploded.I would loved to have had a tool like you provide. Helping young goalies👍 P.S. speaking of being nervous, I played with my pads on backwards for the 1st period in my highschool debut, against the league power house.I let the first shot in and we lost 3 -0 and we're out shot 43 to 3 in a 24 minute game.We finished last in the league and I saw more rubber than Goodyear.

A simple mistake I see a ton of beer leaguers do, is having a way too long paddle. They get the biggest stick they can even if they're below 6' tall, and end up giving up tons of 5 hole goals because the paddle is too long and doesn't cover the 5 hole in the butterfly.

#2 As a bear league goalie I find that after taking the whole week off I need the warm up to get used to the speed of the game. I need those blistering 42 mph slap shots coming at me to get my reactions back up. Focus is easier when you are getting shot at a lot. Focus is hard to keep when you have 3 shots in the last 20 minutes and then get a break away. As a older goalie my hips don’t work in a RVH like you young bucks, I prefer the old school VH and find it easier to explode out to challenge the shooter in the slot that is getting the pass, even if it is on my ear because I over exploded. As to filming, I know you are pushing a product here but even a cheap amazon camera will help with this. I did this so I can buy 2 and 3 cameras and get different angles. I have to delete all the footage of me landing on my face coming out of a VH to snap up that 42 MPH slappish shot but with 3 cameras I can see exactly when I toe picked right before -DEL.

Wonderful tips. Sadly when I started playing hockey at ten years old back in 1979 alot of this information just wasn't around. The equipment was different, the training was No where near what it is today and even the coaching was different. As I developed, I formed some bad habits that unfortunately no one helped me break and that carried into my adult years of playing and unfortunately I got injured enough times to the point where I can no longer play. If anyone young enough is watching this, please follow his advice! Get some good coaching, voice your needs, practice, go to the training camps, and stretch, stretch, stretch.
