Wow, great timing!!! As a fellow Winnipegger and 50 year old sieve of a “goalie” I’m always interested in new gear. The original Vaughn velocities saved my knees! Watching how these pads move on the pros (not that I’m even within 1% of that) they caught my interest! A year out of one set is phenomenal for as much as you play! I’ll stick with my setup which is basically Vaughn but with Brian’s pads and a CCM bag… Keep up the awesome vids!!!!

What a shocker. True/Lefevre ends their relationship with trav and he comes out and trashes them, as he promised he would.

Great vid! I have nothing to say really, I'm completely washed up on todays gear but 20 weeks sounds like a long time to wait for somethign that's gonna break.

Vaughn never fails. I’ve had Bauer and Brian gear but always went back to Vaughn. Just does what you need all the time every time. Bauer blockers are the best tho.

I have a set of coopers from 1982 in my garage somewhere. They are like 28" actual measurements. I can ship immediately. Sorry the graphics are brown leather with major wear spots.

Thorough review. The wait times would be killer but if you do go for a more generic colour scheme, you could probably pick up a pro set from a retailer (although it would not be custom). I know its not the same thing but I find today's pads already have a bunch of options that you can tweak with, it could potentially work out. I am sure this comment would not apply to the college and pro players but for beer leaguers like myself, its more than fine. Love trying to look for pro gear on the cheap.

What gear will u order. I was going to buy the new 12.2’s but when I found out It was a 18-20 week wait from retail. I decided to just go with the EF5 tell next year.

Thanks Trav, Customer service is shockingly bad with a few goalie companies. I'm a coach with some big time call signs and cant get an email from a few ahem (True Vaughn). I was also told wait time on True is 26-30 weeks. Thanks for making me feel better about the loss (their loss)

I almost feel my eh same without Bauer. As a D guy, I always felt that once they started charging more than $180 for twigs that would snap in less than a month, they were going to go all out on the other prices. Sure enough, look at their player skates and sticks now. Wish I would of kept my vapor XX.

Can't really elaborate (NDA because I work on their customizer), but there are (at least) two things you got wrong: - Practice vs Practice Xtra both close the same way. The only difference is that the Xtra one has an extra layer of protection on both sides of the break (the break itself is the same). - They didn't lower the ETA because of you. There's a simple benign reason which I can't talk about (or maybe I can but don't want to risk my job because I love working on their customizer and as stated above, we have a NDA). People might think I'm biased, but I do not work for True/Lefevre directly and I'm only stating facts, not opinions.

Hey! Can I get some advice for a glove? I play u16 aaa right now with a high end Vaughn v9 glove and pretty much every single shot is a hard stinger to the glove if it doesn’t hit my pocket PERFECTLY. I have really good tracking, glove positioning, and years of baseball routing for my catching skill, and I know I have a good glove hand, I just think my glove scares me a bit and just isn’t fast like it should feel any recommendations??? The wait times have gotten worse since I had a good, long look at the gear back in late Feb, early March. Back then, I was told it was a solid 12 weeks, so another 8-10 weeks tacked on seems about right. While I was suitably impressed with the build quality, the price point is a definite sticking point and the graphics barely reach the level of "meh". Also, I know you put your gear through the paces more than even the keenest of beer leaguers, but for velcro to start coming undone after 1 year is kind of sad--not a deal breaker, but definitely something to consider as future maintenance costs. Thanks for the review. Looking forward to seeing the new gear. Also, how hard is it to find a university code? The Hyperlite gear looks awfully tempting to this old fart with bad knees.

I'm sure you've already heard of JRZ; handcrafted in Quebec city, they used to make the Bauer gear I believe, and went their own way when Bauer started to go down the "cheaper material/china made" way.

Back in the 80's I had to use the old donated league gear, because we couldn't afford to buy the new stuff. The choices were between bad and worse. Duct tape was a common fix whenever straps broke and the seams would tear apart.

Yeah.. I tried to get a custom L87 graphic glove before the true brand was on the lefevre pads, because you know… true sucks… and a guy I was talking to told me about it being 20+ weeks, and I hadn’t ordered yet because it was close to the deadline of true buying out lefevre and the guy told me since it was 20+weeks, I’d be able to probably get the lefevre name on it still even though I’d be passing the time that they’d have the true label on it. I ended up buying a Bauer glove off of sideline swap and I’m so glad I didn’t end up going the custom route. Saved me so much money and headache

Good tie in to nord vpn. Segway game is tight! Good review for sure. I like the honesty, as always. I’m always skeptical of Velcro/hook and loop fastening devices. Great in the beginning but in the long run just headaches... not just the hockey industry.

The issue we live in today is, these companies have become so powerful, they can't stand when their product gets called out. I was so pumped to see the classic "L" once again and even tho I'm retired from playing today, seriously thought about getting a set just to own. It was my childhood dream to own a pair of Lefebvre's back in the late 80s. Sad to see them not have the finances after many years with Koho, Reebok, and CCM to keep the company as is and make it. This is also part of the NHL's fault with their uber high demands for equipment contracts. Remember Hiller held out and would cover the name on his pads because of NHL contracts. John Brown getting screwed as well. It's crap and caters to companies that end up causing the issues you're calling out today Trav.

I don't hate on brands but I've always been a Vaughn guy... never failed me once!

Yeah that’s the conflicting part. I would love a Lefevre glove, it sounds awesome, but I don’t trust True and I can get a 90 degree break glove elsewhere for cheaper 🤷🏻‍♂️

Did True break the bank this year with almost ever NHL goalie? There are more True sets out there than anything else and it seems like it happened out of the blue.

I’ve been using Vaughns since the Legacy VPG1000 Moogs. And have tried others in between. Alway go back to the best. Vaughn.

Theres a reason why the waits are 20 weeks it’s because they have to make Carey Price, and 36 other goalies in the nhl’s gear before others which is 65 percent of nhl goalies plus Ahl, CHL... the demand is insane because the product is good Trav. you get the same quality of gear as Hellebuyck no other company is doing that. Bauer sent the wrong size of pad to my goalie partner he ordered a 34 got a 35 how does that happen Bauer dose not care. With the lefevre/true not asking you how they can improve the product they can ask 37 nhl goalies their opinion. with all do respect I see the work you put in but true is not gonna ask a Manitoba Junior B, fringe canadien university goalie when they can ask the best of the best. What do you think trav?

How does a long wait time equal watered down product? To me that is a company that is sticking to their quality, if the wait time drastically drops, then I would be worried that the product was outsourced. Yeah their wait time is double the length of others, but that is probably the popularity built from their new exposure in the show, good problem to have if people are willing to wait that long for it, seems like there must be a few of it takes that long.

i liked how you mentioned the quality would be better through a company like lefevre than a chinese kid making it but really for me i had custom simmons (yes the original simmons they still make gear) air 1000 pro gloves and i have had to replace the top of the blocker due to logo peeling and the glove is great tho but their sticks aswell are shit might ju8st be simmons but still a small local north american based hockey company

A shame that it takes so long, especially because True has become so popular amongst goalies, especially NHL goalies.

My friend who ordered a set have to wait 22-25 weeks ex shipping to Sweden.

Even for pro’s I know pro’s who switched out of Lefevre because of service issues before they were bought by True.

I've always found it weird how many companies have come and went as the #1 goalie pad brand. I don't think any other sport has seen as many 'king of the court' type of brands throughout the decades. TPS, Brian's, KOHO, RBK, Bauer, CCM, Vaughn, and now TRUE. I remember growing up TPS was huge because of Hasek, KOHO because of Roy, CCM because of Brodeur. Now you don't see too many options imo, and everything kind of looks the same.

So the TL;DW is “Excellent gear being marred by corporate meddling.” Or “Business gonna business”.

Can't help but notice that none of the pads in this video have the word "true" on them.

It's come a long way from my Cooper all leather gear.I bet one leg pad weights as much as all of this gear.If you could see my chest protector and arm sleeves you'd laugh.I can't believe the technology that goes into this stuff.

You are Looking at it from the wrong angle. We are lucky to get Lefevre now... so if it’s 20 weeks... oh well. The alternative it Chinese made CCM. Have you ever noticed pro returns went out from the other manufacturers but not CCM? It’s because they wanted to lock that down. We are lucky we can still order from True/Lefevre. 20 weeks no problem, thanks for allowing us regular beer league goalies to still order Canadian Lefevre.

That’s all normal big business stuff that we have to deal with as a business. Yeah it’s sucks for us but they have been bought out and are a good product and consumers have to make a decision on time vs quality.now under a new business model. They need to figure it out. What happens in the short term vs. what happens in the long term. Think they have got the product and nhl is supporting them.

There are so many companies making gear. Who owns whom?!?! I miss the good old days way back when I played. Easier to shop for gear. I miss my amazing D&R leg pads. They ruled!

UPDATE, anyone thinking of ordering gear DO NOT DO IT. I’m waiting 6 months, told it’s going to be another 5 to 6 months but true might cancel the order before then. It’s clear they don’t care about customers. Fuck true

Idk it seems like if you like supporting domestic goal companies, which I agree with. However, the only options I see for your level of play is Vaughn, Brians, or Jrz. JRZ were responsible for all Bauer pro equipment at one time, and I can only speak from my experience, but their stuff now is really well made. Stock graphics aren't the greatest, but it's not much more for custom graphics. Listen I know you like the warrior line, and I sport some warrior too, but noone should be able to twist their goal pad into a pretzel after a years use.

If the Lefevre guys can't handle making gear for everyone whilst being backed by True, they wouldn't be able to handle it on their own either. Not saying that True is doing better for them because I have no idea, but the facts are that they are trying to satisfy way more customers with the same factory, same employees and same designers. True's resources may help to increase the productivity but I foresee a True goalie factory in China or Mexico for retail customers to compensate for Lefevre's production deficit, which means we're back to square one with Lefevre.

Seems like he’s saying don’t buy because of price and wait time. Buy what brand you like and what you feel comfortable in. I’ve tried Brian’s and Vaughn and didn’t like either of them. It’s all based on personal preference.
