In this China vlog about living in Beijing as a foreigner, I am travelling from Beijing City to Urumqi City in Xinjiang. I am going to visit the Uyghur Autonomous Region Museum, the Urumqi International Bazaar and Heavenly Lake… this video is my travel vlog and quick initial impression and insight into my hotel stay.

Family and friends visited last year in an RV. Saw Heavenly Lake, Urumqi, YiNing, Yili, Muslim markets, Nalati grassland, etc. Trip of a lifetime.

Xinjiang looks amazing & epitomises that China is a very diverse country. Many people say China is it's own Continent. I can see why.

@@ForAllLifesAdventures It would be strange if you knew what it looked like just 10 or 15 years ago. Mind you, 10 and 15 years ago there would be absolutely no way you'd be sponsored or allowed there. Some pretty horrific violence and troubles. but, that aside, you'd have seen the original Uighur buildings and markets and Turkish culture as it was then.

From 2013 to 2022, Xinjiang’s average annual GDP growth rate was 7.1%, higher than the national average of 6.2% in the same period. now average GDP per capita is as same as the Malaysian.

I watch this video with great envy and interest! I’ll definitely be following your videos! First impressions look great. Far from being the backwater inhabited by unhappy suppressed people as depicted in the western media, Urumqi looks so amazingly modern with people who seem to be enjoying life! My favourite youtube channel. Always fascinating.No need to apologise for staying in a nice hotel.You deserve it.I had that same working class guilt about staying in relatively expensive hotels in Beijing and Shanghai,but quickly got over it!

Yeah, it is working class guilt… having come from a poor housing schemes in Glasgow, it stays with you and I am glad it does and it has and will always be my grounding on how we should treat each other… but yep, I do need to manage it 😝

What a great start of a trip, Iain. The hotel is definitely a bargain, very beautiful and spacious. The buffet looks like a great value too. I would assume that Urumqi is much cheaper than Beijing, at least for eating out.

Yeah, the hotel is nice. I was staying here to showcase Xinjiang but decided to stay the full trip. The food at breakfast is great and it means I can load up for the long walks I do 😝 eating out is much cheaper than Beijing 👍🏼

Make sure you travel to Kashgar in the South or Kanas in the North. Those are what Xinjiang can truly present

I was going to do Urumqi and Kashgar but couldn’t get enough time off… Kashgar I hope to get to at some point in the future, it looks amazing and key to the Silk Road experience. 👍🏼

Yes, Iain, it's like any other small city in China. There seems to be no shortage of mod con. I think the outskirt areas will feature more local cultural characteristics. Bon voyage.

Yeah, city centres are becoming central hubs for shopping etc but certainly, as I have found, the outskirts or local neighbourhoods are where you find the real character ❤️

I made a friend a while ago and I really want to visit him. He lives in this city and I‘m actually quite scared to pack up my stuff and fly all the way there from Germany. This video really helped me to understand that it’s a pretty normal city in China and I‘m a lot less scared. Thank you

To modernize or not to modernize - that is the burning question. If Urumqi and other parts of old China does not modernize, China will be criticized for having "no improvements" but when she modernizes and bring in modern buildings with all the modern conveniences, she is criticized for not having enough "traditional" buildings around. Unfortunately, as they say, when you make an omelette, you have to break an egg and there are no two ways around it. But haters will always hate and find reasons to hate.

Price in Xinjiang is somewhat higher than coastal areas of China, since it is far away from most of the cities that manufacture everything we use daily. Therefore, shipment cost is higher.

I drove there last year. only 1 tip is dont mess with the armed police, thats all. all other stuffs are pretty normal. when you dont know what to eat, bbq mutton in any restaurant is always a right choice, I hadnt had any bad bbq in any kinds of restaurant in Xinjiang.

I ve been to xinjiang multiple times, and I ve stayed in the Conrad too which is close to the MM Mall featuring all those luxury brands. Highly Recommend this Restaurants in Urumqi called 楼兰秘烤 Loulan Bbq , it’s like a castle with local dancing performance. It’s amazing, once in a lifetime kind of experience

In 'd e m o c r a c i e s', and I'll use this term lightly here, citizens are p itted against each other for political votes, whereas in C hina goverance system base on Confucian principles, it promotes harmony amongst all of its citizens and more importantly there is continuous efforts to attain common prosperity for all. 🔍🦉

it's kind of sad to see the original culture has been disappeared and little remains BUT the modern Chinese malls and replacements built over top of the dead culture are probably cleaner, healthier and more convenient. oh, Xinjian is also famous for where they had massive re-education camps before assigning them new jobs, moving them from their original homes into new apartments and they even learned art and dancing in those camps!
