you are absolutely correct - eating and accommodations do not require that you take out a second mortgage! Japanese fast food (especially the yatais - street carts, and mom&pop diners) can be fun, inexpensive and delicious! each city has its own specialties which can easily be found in these places. $5 ramen bowls, $2 yakitori sticks, $1 sweet treats are ubiquitous.

@@realescape Most excited about? For me it's returning to Japan after living there (in Adogawa) for a couple of months back in 1996 (!). And I always told my kids about that fabulous time and now they want to see it themselves. I think I am most excited about Koya-san (never been there before) and of course the food in Osaka!

Thanks for the video. I’ve been looking at taking my wife and son to Japan for a long time, but it always seems so daunting. But I’m going to make myself pull the trigger on it this year. Hoping to stay under 6-7k for 3 ppl for 2 weeks or so. I bet flights are the big expense.

This is so helpful. Appreciate your insight very much. I’m finally going to Japan (bucket list) to solo travel for 12 days. Never travelled before, I’m extremely nervous and excited. Please, I have one quick question. Did you reserve all lodging in advance or did book your lodging on the road one location at a time? All my research, so far, suggests to book way in advance and I’m concerned it will limit the trip in some way. Thank you both so much, much love from Baja Sur, MX

Thanks and you will enjoy your trip! We always booked 2-3 days out. But your first location you should do way in advance to have somewhere to go. Border patrol/customs will also require you to have this we believe. We liked agoda.com

I really enjoyed the breakdown of the prices. Were the prices you showed the total you spent at each location? Some friends and I are planning a trip to japan this coming year and I've been stressing about how much it might actually cost and this is showing me it's a bit more affordable than I thought, granted that's without the plane tickets to Japan.
@realescape
@realescape 5 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the information. Yes, total for each location at the end of each segment. Right now Japan is still very affordable compared to a few years ago, so I'd say it is the perfect time to go. We kept it cheap by staying in more affordable places since we were going to be out and about most of the day.

Can you comment on how much luggage you had and how you handled it with traveling from city to city? We are on similar itinerary but with 2 kids in tow. Wondering if using locker is good option or sending forward.
@realescape
@realescape Жыл бұрын
Of course! We each had a travel backpack with most of our electronics and one international carry on sized luggage. We mostly left our bags in the hotels we were staying at and if we stopped somewhere we weren't staying between locations, like Matsumoto, we used a locker. They are at most stations or bus stations. Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip!

If you don't mind me asking, what did you spend on tickets to Japan, and where did you fly from(just so I can get a comparison to flights in looking at currently)
@realescape
@realescape Жыл бұрын
Of course we don't mind :). We spent $498 each and we flew from Brisbane, Australia. We usually look for good deals on flights from sky scanner and also our chase credit card as we use points for some flights. We compare the prices all the time.
