This 72-minute movie explores the equipment I have chosen and the additional travel items I pack when I travel light with my mirrorless cameras. Although it focusses on Sony equipment it would be suitable for anyone thinking of moving from a DSLR to a lighter and more compact camera kit. The movie also explores some of my basic camera settings and some advice on shooting styles when traveling.

Mark, you're the best photography instructor on KZfaq, as far as I'm concerned. You're highly technical and artistic, which enables Sony shooters like me to use our equipment to achieve better visual results. Far too many instructors are light on both. Thanks a lot.

I came across your channel whilst researching for a new camera system and Sony can largely chalk that sale down to you. Damn you, I spent far more than intended. I gradually started looking at your other postings and it just occurred to me that you have become the go to guy. Thank you for sharing so much useful guidance.

Excellent advice and I really enjoyed your packing methods to fit the intended shoot. I try to take two cameras for different purposes and will have to look at the Sony RX 100 VI as the camera always to carry with me. One thing you don't mention is shooting video on location or my favourite, time lapses of sunrise and sunset. My next quest is to start shooting drone shots. Up up and away...

Hi Mark. I have learned so much more from you in the last week than everything I've watched and read in the last 3 months since I've had my entry-level A5100. Thank you for all the hard work. We truly appreciate it. I just joined your group on KZfaq and Flickr. Anyhoos...I was wondering if yo have any content on night photography. I have plans on going to the Amsterdam Lights Festival and chase the Northern Lights in Norway this winter, but I do not have a clue as to where to start. It would be great if you could one day give us some tips when shooting in the dark and the auroras.

Very interesting to hear that you mostly use the wide AF. I really try but too often I just can't get the camera to focus where I want it to. So I just end up using center AF, pressing the shutter halfway, reframing, and then taking the picture.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 3 жыл бұрын
If you understand Sony's AF algorithms its very predictable. When using the Wide AF Area the camera focuses on the subject that is nearest the centre and nearest the camera. In 90% of shots people are photographing on a subject that the Wide AF will automatically pick up. If the camera seems to be randomly picking something then there is a good change you do not have a primary subject that is near the camera. Watch my Focus Area and Focus masterclass video tutorials to remove the mystery of Sony's focusing systems. Once learnt never forgot.

Another excellent video Mark. Thanks. Are Sony going to add the ANIMAL eye AF in a firmware update or only in the next generation of cameras?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
Bella Cavachon - I don’t see any reason for them not to add it to the current lineup of cameras. Another reason for Sony to promote an advantage of their Mirrorless systems (now that they have some more company)
@bellacavachon7510
@bellacavachon7510 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but they aren't Fuji when it comes to firmware updates, alas. The stupid "invisible" grey AF box is a joke. If they couldn't be bothered to sort out that easy fix, then I'm not holding out much hope for much else.

I like how you suggest practice shooting hard ti hit targets several times to really nail it. so many off my attempted bird shot are blurry. I want to keep them but they just aren't quite right.]
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 3 жыл бұрын
Birds are the most difficult subjects to track so you may need to build up practice with slower moving raptors that swoop and glide rather than flap about. Remember to keep your shutter speed fast until you feel confident enough to try some slow shutter speed pans to blur the background. When panning the camera switch the steady mode on the lens to 2 or witch it off when using fast shutter speeds.

Hi Mark, Thanks for your work and its really awesome, May I pop a quick question, what are your views of using a UV filter over expensive lens? Do you personal use them or just shoot and travel without these? Thanks.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t use them - the metal lens hoods offer good protection so long as you don’t throw your car keys into your camera bag with lenses that don’t have their lens caps attached.
@yourtravelchannel

@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thanks Mark for your reply! I was thinking of removing all my filters off, but if I do that, it seems it will not be totally weather sealed as some lens instruction say only if a filter is put on, then its weather sealed. What’s your take on it? And will you get dust into the glass if there is no filter? Thanks so much!

Mark, I have a prime ultra wide I travel with but do you think the Sony 24-105 is sharp enough to replace the need for normal length primes like 35,50 and 85?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 жыл бұрын
Vultite - it’s certainly sharp enough - the main reason I would also carry an 85 prime is the f/1.8 aperture can provide significantly more figure/ground separation when used wide open. This is sometimes important to me when I have less control over clutter in the background

How often do you actually find airlines check your carryon weight? I ask because I frequently travel with a fully loaded Pelican 1510 case and a fairly sizable shoulder bag or backpack (Urban Disguise 40 Classic or Backlight 26L) with an attached TVC-24L (head removed) and I've yet to run into problems other than occasionally having to gate check the Pelican Case on smaller planes. Admittedly almost all of my travel experience has been in Asia and North America, but I definitely exceed the theoretical weight limit on a regular basis.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 жыл бұрын
It depends if you are inside the USA or travelling outside of the USA. Budget Airlines in Europe make a considerable income from overweight hand luggage. A good friend here in Australia, who was travelling with 15KG in his backpack, was told at the boarding gate he could pay to have the bag sent on the next flight or pay a fine of $500.00 to board the flight. He wasn't even on a budget airline and he was a Gold member. I have had my bag weighed three times in the last five years.
