Alberta's Cowboy Trail is one of the most scenic highways in the province and the perfect place to explore a modern version of the Old West. 👉Check out Canmore, the other Banff • The Other Banff! Canm...
Enjoy the views of the Rocky Mountains, a stop in Bragg Creek, fly fishing at the Elbow River and glimpses of some of the Alberta ranches along the Cowboy Trail.
The Cowboy Trail is more than just a ribbon of pavement from Cardston to Mayerthorpe. On the Trail the Old West is still evident in the art, history, food, hospitality, and culture of the foothills residents. Along the way, you’re likely to see cowboys out herding cattle, sometimes right along the highway, and families out for a horseback ride.
There’s plenty to do along The Cowboy Trail. Stay at a guest ranch or working ranch. Experience a trail ride with an outfitter into some of Alberta’s prettiest country. Take in a rodeo, cowboy festival or a pow-wow for a day. The western spirit comes alive in the small communities along the trail with special cowboy-flavoured events.
Enjoy western hospitality up close and become part of the community while you enjoy a pancake breakfast. Watch a small-town parade, shop for local crafts and western antiques, or cheer during a rodeo. Listen to poets celebrate the western way of life. Watch native dancers move to the beat of a drum. Stay an extra night at a bed-and-breakfast and watch dawn break on the eastern slopes.
From Cochrane or Longview, and points close to the TransCanada Highway #1, you can turn west into the heart of the Rocky Mountains to experience Kananaskis Country or Banff National Park.
Now is the time to saddle up and drive The Cowboy Trail!

My gosh - Cowboy Trail is beautiful. The overhead view of the fisherman in the River was very cool. Enjoyed seeing the small towns, stores and restaurants along the way. The views throughout the foothills were spectacular. This was a video we selected to watch on the TV. Thank you 😊

AB Hwy 22, The Cowboy Trail, is definitely a road less traveled in Alberta. I have driven it from end to end and it has everything. Scenery, camping, shopping, dining, lodging. And its proximity to the foothills grants easy access to Waterton Lakes National Park, The Crowsnest Pass, Banff National Park, David Thompson Country and Jasper National Park. Thanks for sharing K! 😉
