In all my years, in AMC (MAC), never did Space A travel. We sure carried a lot of space A pax however in the old C-141B days and C-17. My first base, Norton with the old 807 mission. Did that a lot way back then. I could tell some stories about Clark or nearby but I won't. As a retiree, I would not even consider it. Much easy to fly commercial. I can't recall the last time I was on a military installation. Maybe around 2015 there about. It is completely alien to me an a gym that I frequent, a lot of USAF types there but completely unrecognizable compared to when I was in. A whole lot of ink and a whole lot of muscle. The days of the bad combover, fat bellies and birth control glasses are long gone. Look at how fancy the Travis PAX terminal is these days. No clouds of tobacco smoke.

I remember flying this same route as a kid several times, also in the KC-10, and C-130 Travis to Clark Air Base Philippines. The pilots let me and my brother watch the mid-air refueling from the cockpit

Nice sound recording of takeoff. A C5 doesn't sound like that anymore(exchanged the TF39 for the the CF6 engines a few years ago).

Where can I park my car in Travis? I don’t want it to get towed for sure. Thanks!

The 30 Day parking lot is located about a five minute walk from the passenger terminal at Travis AFB. Once you have been selected for a flight after roll call, the will issue you a parking pass for your dashboard. Then you move your car over to the 30 Day parking lot, then return to the passenger terminal and you are on your way!

Thanks for your question. The flightline video was not my native video. It was posted to the internet from an airshow not so long ago when hundreds of people were taking video of the flightline.

how often is there a space a flight from Hickum to Travis? Heard it's daily.
@CliffWagner

Jamie, they occur several times a week, but I would not say daily. It varies from week to week depending on mission requirements. You can view the 72 hour Report and Roll Call here: www.amc.af.mil/AMC-Travel-Site/Terminals/PACOM-Terminals/Joint-Base-Pearl-Harbor-Hickam-Passenger-Terminal/

It's been so long since I flew this (over 35 years ago). It use to be called MAC flights. I can't remember, do they have a lavatory onboard the C5 aircrafts? Or all their aircrafts in general?
@CliffWagner
@CliffWagner 5 ай бұрын
C5 and C17 have lavatories - C130 is a wall hole with a curtain. (Not so nice.)

What is the parking situation like at Travis AFB? Is there a place to park (long term) for your car? Is there a parking charge? Also how would you board with a mobility scooter? Is there a ramp or steps only onto the aircraft?
@CliffWagner
@CliffWagner 5 ай бұрын
Travis AFB and most passenger terminals generally have 30 day "short term" parking lots near the passenger terminal. Ordinarily, once you are selected for a space a flight during roll call, you would then receive a parking placard and have time to move your car to the 30 day parking lot and leave the placard on the dashboard of your car. As for boarding with a mobility scooter, I would have to direct you to passenger terminal personnel. Give them a call and I am sure that they can answer those specific questions.

Hey we were thinking of flying to Hawaii space a here in a day. There is two flights. A c5 and a patriot express. Was wondering which one you would pick. We just got registered so we are pretty low on the list priority wise. Reserve status. Do you have any opinion?
@CliffWagner
@CliffWagner 6 ай бұрын
Because they are scheduled for rollcall within a few hours of each other I would first compete for the earlier flight, so that I have a back up option if I wasn’t selected for that first flight. The seating configurations on both planes will be very similar. So, there’s very little comfort level difference.

@@CliffWagner I just didn't know if the C5 is going to break for maintenance or something and then we miss out on the commercial flight. I wish they were spaced out a little bit further If you have any other advice would much appreciate

The only passenger terminals geographically near OC are North Island Naval Air Station San Diego or March Air Reserve Base in Riverside Co. You could catch a low cost South West Airlines from OC to Sacramento and Uber to Travis AFB.

Can a military spouse with a pending immigration visa use Space A?
@CliffWagner
@CliffWagner Жыл бұрын
I am unaware of anything in DoDI 4515.13 (the regulation) that addresses the immigration visa question. My suspicion is that if a spouse is eligible for entry into the United States, or otherwise eligible travel to foreign destinations under an existing passport, then yes. However, I recommend that you call a passenger terminal and confirm.

I heard you saying, my group? Is there a group of veterans that gather and travel together on different destinations? If so, could you get back with me and give any information on this. I am 62, 100% total and disabled and have no friends, basically. I would love to travel a couple of times a year, but I know I would never travel by myself. I am one of those what i guest Veterans Administration calls 'lonely veterans where they have a number now, to call if you are experiencing loniness. Not sure if this is working for veterans, but at least there is a out reach for this situation. I know the feeling and it is not fun. I am trying to teach myself to leave my home more and start living a brighter, more fun future instead of just getting up everyday to only wait for the night to go to sleep....i just lost my Yorkie that I had for 14 years as my support animal and really have no reason why I can't travel now, that I have no excuses on the concerns of leaving my dog home while traveling. If I had a group to travel with, on my first trip, to break the ice, of fear of even, giving the thought of traveling. If it went well, I think I would use the hop system to make my life easier with loniness. I apologize for bothering you with my question, but I find your videos so helpful and you give so much information to the veterans who have been out of the system when it comes to our benefits. Thank you for all you do for us. Originally, I found you on u-tube when you gave a review on the band 'HOME FREE'. They are my favorite band to listen too. I watch many music videos with 'reviews' mostly, and sometimes I just listen to the cover of the songs. The review videos style is a great way to feel like you are with company listening to music . Then your military videos started popping up on my feeds. Your knowledge and sharing it is a great addition to veterans. Thank you for your service, and for protecting our country, making it the greatest country in the world. Sincerely yours, Jill.

Hi Jill - thanks for reaching out and I am happy to hear that you have found some of my videos useful. Your reference to my use of the word group is correct, I usually travel with a handful of retired military friends that I came up with through the course of my career and I believe it makes the space-a and travel experience richer and more enjoyable. We are able to split come costs, but more importantly value the camaraderie of traveling together. Here is my recommendation to you. I recommend that you look into a few specific space-a Facebook groups. If you are not on Facebook, I recommend that you build a profile and get on Facebook as it represents the most efficient way to connect with the folks that I am going to suggest. First, check out and join the following space-a travel Facebook groups: SPACE A DOD TRAVELERS of USA, Military Space Available Travel (both groups) yes, there are two... Space A Tips and Trips. I am going to recommend that you reach out to two ladies who are admins on several of these sites and their names are: Carol Green at: facebook.com/groups/544591884126601/user/100001540985452 and Christi My at: facebook.com/christi.meyer1 I recommend these two ladies because they are very experienced and have shown a receptivity to providing guidance to new space-a travelers. I believe that they might know of specific space-a travel buddy groups or help connect you with specific people to begin to correspond with. I believe if you reach out a little, I would be you would find quite a few like minded ladies and probably a few gents too! Obviously you need to be careful/thoughtful that you identify and select a space-a travel buddy or two who is compatible and going to be able to shoulder 100% of their own financial travel needs. I don't know where your home base is, but I would recommend that you start with a simple local "easy" space-a trip. One that is not a problem if you have to resort to a commercial flight to get back or even Amtrak. Bottom line, keep it simple and stress free. Even if you go alone the first time ot two just to get comfortable with the process. You will find that the passenger terminal staff are very helpful and your fellow travelers are a great resource too! So, my strong encouragement is to get out there and go! The sooner you do so the easier it will be. Best wishes to you in planning your adventure and I hope that you have an amazing time! - Cliff
