Travelling 7 Hours to Witness Stilt Fishermen (who don't actually fish...) & Turtles! 🐢 🇱🇰

This side of Sri Lanka is pretty but I came here specifically for one thing and that one thing was merely an act for tourists during my visit, which was a bit of a let down.
Regardless, I was so grateful to end my visit to the country with a swim with the beautiful turtles in their natural habitat :)

15:16 actually it not the season, again in the session time also you need to visit early in the morning or late in the evening to see genuine stilt fishermen in this area otherwise you will see only businessman. :D

Hi Nat... There are places where stilt fishing happens for real and they start fishing around 5.30am in the morning and when it becomes hot they stop fishing as it is hard to bear the burning sun. I have many photos and videos of those, which I'm unable to share in this comment. And many of those places are not where tourists actually visit. Usually visiting these places happen in day time and it is the time the actual fishing does not happen, so some kind of staging is required for demonstrating what happens. Staged realities for tourism as you may well be aware is common in many touristic places around the world as most traditional methods are now being replaced by the new technologies which are more effective. And for some traditions, this could be the only way they would survive. So kindly have an open mind about these kind of things. Also, the only things you see does not wholly reflect what is real, so you need to get good advice and information from several local sources for you to get the real experience. So why not ask around :-). Do agree that there are many locals that are somewhat invasive but its partly to do with the culture also where the Sri Lankan culture is a more collective culture than an individualistic culture. So sharing some private information or getting close is the norm. That is how you get the best experiences.
