This episode will address how to tighten up your steering by upgrading the steering bell crank, servo horn and servo. I do a step by step installation of the Hot Racing aluminum steering bell crank with an adjustable servo saver, and talk about the aluminum servo horn from Team Losi Racing. I also suggest a couple of upgrade servos from Savox and Xpert.
Here are some links:
Hot Racing steering bell crank w/adjustable servo saver:
www.hot-racing.com/index.cgi?p...
TLR aluminum servo horn:
www.tlracing.com/Products/Defa...
ATTENTION: The screw hole in this servo horn is 2,5 mm diameter while the original screw is 3mm. This is how I solved it: Before I installed the servo horn, I forced the original screw (link between servo horn and servo link) into the servo horn. I did this several times until the screw went a little lighter through the hole. I was very careful not to strip the screw. Added a lot of pressure to the screwdriver as I was working the screw in. This turned out great and the screw almost doesn't need loctite (I added loctite anyways). Sorry for forgetting to mention this in the video!!

Thanks sharing. I did change my servo just prior seeing this video and contacted Savox for waterproof HD. They responded fast mentioning the same you link and also suggested to go with newer/improved SW-1210SG that is now in my Slash Platinum 4x4 and add glitch buster from Spektrum. This is really fast and strong. Sound like I will check for aluminum parts and maximize precision now. If want improve your videos disconnects fans, those few minutes won’t make overheating. Again well done video.

Awesome video! Full of useful information! I have the slash 4x4 68086-4 racing edition (NON LCG...will be getting that too, probably should get that first) with the vxl3, stability management, TQi for the traxxas link. My car is ALL STOCK except the shocks, spur gear, front a arms and tires., and don't really know what I should be upgrading ASAP.. I wanna get that servo you said u wanted to get too Xpert wr 4401. So If I got the glitch buster and servo, would my stock steering bellcrank hold out with the stock ESC, or is it necessary to upgrade that too? At high speed my truck wobbles back and forth even with the steering trim at full force, and multifunction at 0. Played with those settings extensively but still wobbles at high speed. Looks like I need to drop some cash on some aluminum front caster and steering blocks, bellcrank, servo horn and servo.. Im rookie as they come and have a lot to learn still. Do you have any suggestions, insight, recommendations for me it would be immensely appreciated. You know your stuff and Definitely someone I can trust! Absolutely the best educational/informational video Ive seen! Thank you, my Norwegian friend! SUBSCRIBED! :D (that bearing change out vid helped a lot too btw..keep killin it with these vids!)

Thank you Mr Panama! I would say the Savox SW1211SG is a perfect fit for the Slash. It's strong, fast and waterproof. At least for me it's much nicer with a fast servo, it might be a bit weird in the start having such fast response on the steering wheel, but you can tune it down a bit with exp settings on your radio. Hope you got the info you needed :)

Hello, great video as always, thanks for your help improving our RCs! I have a question though, I got the HR bell cranck you are mentioning in the video and I am concerned the servo saver is really VERY stiff. I have a Power HD 23kg servo (very decent product btw). I already ripped the stock horn and am concerned that by putting an Aluminum horn my servo will be the next weak link... What do you think? (i'm hoping the servo link is the next week link, wanted to get your opinion) Thanks!
@gerdanc
@gerdanc 7 жыл бұрын
I bought the exact servo horn you recommend and it has smaller threads than the Traxxas steering link uses. The Losi uses 2.5mm threads and Traxxas uses 3mm. You either have to drill and tap the Losi horn or use a smaller diameter screw which adds slop to the steering link. Maybe they changed it or something but you might want to address this so other people don't buy the wrong thing.

You are absolutely right Marty, I totally forgot to tell you guys how I solved that one. Now, before I installed the servo horn, I forced the original screw (link between servo horn and servo link) into the servo horn. I did this several times until the screw went a little lighter through the hole. I was very careful not to strip the screw. Added a lot of pressure to the screwdriver as I was working the screw in. This turned out great and the screw almost doen't need loctite (I added loctite anyways). Sorry for forgetting to mention this!!

Curious if you ever tried finding a stiffer spring for the HR servo saver. I have this on my stampede, but the spring is a tad too soft for running sledgehammers. If I tighten the knurl nut down to stiffen it up some, the spring fully compresses with very little "saver" separation. A stiffer spring will let me back it off enough so the servo saver still functions, but also sends more power to the tires.

Hey! Excellent channel! Quick question. If I do the 17mm hex conversion should I upgrade my servo? I just use it to bash, but I'm concerned it's a matter of time before the 2075 breaks on me. Thanks in advance! Also I've subscribed!
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Luke! I don't have any hands on experience with 17mm hex, but I don't see why that should bring more tension to the servo. I mean, the wheels will still be the same size and turning the wheels should demand the same type of power. In my opinion you should have fun with your stock servo until it finally breaks, and then it's time to do a decision. I would then upgrade, because if it breaks once it will break again. A stronger servo makes up for more fun driving, but then you put a lot more strain to the next few links in the steering chain, just as I explain in the video :) No matter what, go out and have fun: Fix it, drive it, break it, repeat :)

Great video!! Very informative, thanks for posting. Have you ever had a problem with the slash steering failing to center after letting go of the transmitter wheel? It’s driving me nuts! I have an LCG 4x4 with the HR bellcrank, Savox low end servo and TLR servo horn from your video. I’ve centered the servo and the transmitter steering adjustment, installed the horn around one o’clock, tested the servo with the linkage disconnected and manually moved the disconnected front wheels from side to side and I can’t find any binding! Not sure what to do next... rebuild the entire front end? It seems like a lot of my steering movement goes into wiggling the HR bell-crank columns themselves... does your bell-crank wiggle? Or does it firmly stay put? Thanks! Also... subscribed!
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
What a puzzle!! Sounds like you have checked out most possible causes for a problem like this. I like your systematic approach btw :) My bellcrank does not have any wiggle, so maybe that’s the problem? Are the bearings properly seated on the steering post? Have you tried to tighten the servo saver? I have mine about as hard as it gets (bigger risk of blowing the servo, but so far so good). Otherwise I would say that the servo just isn’t strong enough to handle the bellcrank, even though mine works fine.
@kevinhandy254
@kevinhandy254 6 жыл бұрын
Northern Light RC thanks for the reply! I finally figured it out! My bearings were fully seated but I did try tightening my bell crank. Still had my binding issue. So then I started disconnecting everything on the front end side of the bell crank and I realized that the stainless steel screws I had used to secure the axle carrier were significantly more snug than the stock shoulder screws. I put the stock screws back in and it was a lot smoother but still not perfect. The last piece was realizing that I had installed the RPM axle carrier but kept the stock caster blocks. I swapped in the RPM caster blocks and now everything is smooth as butter! Here’s a pic of the screws and the stock caster blocks that I removed i.imgur.com/zP7ehDR.jpg

@NorthernLightRC

Well, it’s way better than the stock plastic traxxas servo, but I must admit I’ve become quite spoiled on quicker servos after I started racing. I’ll be changing it out once I have a spare one from my racers. But it’s all about what driving style you prefer. A slower servo will give you a smoother drive if you don’t want to practice on your response skills :)

I literal just found out that if you have installed an LCG kit on your 2wd slash then there is a big time clearance problem with the TRAXAS brand aluminum aftermarket bell crank. Not only is iyt almost impossible to slide onto the mounting post of the LCG skid plate, But I found that the where clearance problem and I had to use an exacto knife to cut away some plastic here and there so the bell crank would turn freely... So the lesson is this, If you have an LCG kit onb your slash, Try a different aluminum bell crank manufacture, Don't use the TRAXCAS

love your vids. running the 4pole 3500Kv velineon 4x4 slash with 3s traxxas battery on stock gearing and Im really not wowed by it. Im looking for more punch and more top end. i just ordered a 15-20T pinion set to play with the gearing but ultimately will get a new motor/esc. Im also getting SMC 3s packs with a higher discharge rate. is there anything else i can do for more power while keeping the stock setup
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 7 жыл бұрын
+Andre Mcbreairty thanks man, I value your feedback :) Yeah, the vxl system sure does have it's limitations. If you want to keep the stock setup, there's really not much you can do for more power other than gearing up and get 3s batteries with a high c rating. Be aware of that once you start putting in higher pinion gears you will most likely start getting heat problems on motor and esc. You should then get fans for both of them. The yeah racing tornado fans are my choice. They're very strong and does a great job, but they're quite noisy. I only run 2s batteries on mine for now since track racing has a 2s limitation. The c-rating really helps on acceleration. I went from 50c rating to 110c and the difference was huge. Good luck, man, hope you have fun with your truck :)

Hi just a question about the RPM front bulk head and aftermarket steering bell crank. It looks like you modified your front bulkhead when installing the bell crank is that the case? If so why? Thanks in advance!
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
Well observed, Ed! At some point in the past I broke my servo horn on the track and had to refit a friend's servo horn to get going again. It didn't really fit, so I had rubbing issues. I carved out a little piece of the bulkhead and was able to continue racing. I figured I'll use this bulkhead as long as it works, so today it has no function at all :)

Can I use a glitch buster with an esc that has a super internal BEC? More specifically, the Castle MM2 and the Hobbywing Max10
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
I’m no expert on electronics, but I would say it works. It’s nothing but a hub for extra voltage between the battery and the esc. If the draw is bigger than what the battery can provide, the glitch buster will come in and cover the reserves needed. Anyone else knows more about this?

Hey good video i just subscribed to your channel,what type of esc & motor are needed for the savox sw1211sg waterproof servo?
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for subscribing to my channel!! The servo should work on most esc's. Motor isn't an issue. The servo is a hight voltage servo and requires that the esc provides enough juice. If it doesn't, the servo will start to "glitch". If it does you'll just need to buy a cheap 10 dollar glitch buster, which works as a voltage reservoir to provide a constant voltage flow to the servo.

I have upgraded to a savox 1258tg Aluminum traxxas bellcrank Aluminum servo horn Aluminum caster blocks and steering blocks Running no servo saver I don’t understand why I still have some slop any advice This is on a rustler
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 5 жыл бұрын
Well, I would set the rustler up on a well lit table, turn on the esc and try to observe where the slop is coming from. It might be some slop on the end of the a-arms where the caster vlocks connects with the a-arm? Then small shims might help, as long as it doesn’t block any movement of the arm. Try to wiggle the a-arm and see if it moves.

Hey man, please help. I just got the servo saver and a savox 1258tg servo. The part of the bellcrank that attaches to the servo linkage is hitting my driveshaft when I turn. Any clue why?
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your upgrade! So when you center your servo and put the servo horn on to the servo, make sure the servo horn is set slightly to the right, almost one o clock. I that doesent solve it, you can try to make the servo linkage a bit longer. If nothing else helps you can set your steering channel end points so it doesn’t hit. Good luck man, hope you succeed!

I just set my end points a little less, my steering range is a little lacking right now but I'll save for the tekno center shaft and then I should be able to get full range again
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there’s not much room for the servo horn on the slash. It is the servo linkage between the servo horn and the servo saver arm that is hitting the drive shaft, so try to adjust that one until you hit the sweet spot, and you should have a problem free steering with plenty of turning. Good luck!
@devon8419
@devon8419 6 жыл бұрын
Northern Light RC it was the part of the bellcrank that attaches to the linkage, every time I would turn right it would push the driveshaft. I swapped that single part over to the plastic stock one so at least now it isn't scraping and it doesn't sound terrible

Wassup Northern Light Rc I have a slash 4x4 and my steering doesn't work. In the air the wheels move left and right. But in the floor they won't move. I changed the servo and servo saver do you know what it might be
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there fellow RC'er! Well, there are a few things that might cause you this problem. 1. Binding. There might be some kind of binding somewhere in the steering setup. Turn your RC off and try to move your front wheels with your hand. If there is too much resistance, you'd have to find out what causes this. 2. Sloppy servo saver. If the spring in the servo saver is too loose, the servo saver will not be able to turn the wheels. Turn you RC on and try to turn the front wheels with your hands. If the wheels turn while the servo stands still, you've got a loose servo saver spring. If you have the aluminum adjustable servo saver, you can tighten the spring and the problem is solved (remember that a tight servo saver will put more strain on the servo, so it should be a strong servo). 3. Weak servo. If the servo isn't very strong (torque), to will struggle to turn the wheels. Then get a stronger servo. In this case it's true what they say: you get what you pay for. A strong and more costly servo will get you where you want to be. Hope this helps you out and you are able to solve your issues. Keep on RC'ing !!

Do I need a glitch buster with the $50 servo
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
I would say yes, but you are free to try without before deciding to buy a glitch buster. Most high end servos have a higher voltage demand, and the glitch buster will keep a reserve of voltage to feed the servo whenever the ESC can't keep it up. And then you'll get a smooth and consistent servo operation :)

Do I need the Glitch buster for the Savox 1210sg?
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 7 жыл бұрын
+Keith Dell hi man, thanks for dropping by :) The 1210 is not listed as a high voltage servo at the savox homepage, so you might be fine without a glitch buster. Why not just try it out? If the servo starts glitching on you, buy a glitch buster, they're not expensive.

Thanks for the reply. I put in the servo last night and it works wonderfully! I purchased the 1210 instead of the 1211 like you suggested, primarily because my local shop only carried the 1210. I also ordered the team losi servo horn and it is arriving today. Thank you for making such a informative video on this subject. you really helped me upgrade my truck steering. I appreciate what your doing in videos, keep it up!

+Keith Dell Hi Keith! Thank you so much for your kind words, it makes it all worth the work I try to do here. I'm happy to share what I've picked up along the way. Now, bear in mind that the servo horn hole for the screw (the one connecting the servo arm to the servo horn) is a tad small for the stock screw, but I forced the screw all the way in and out again before mounting it to the servo to expand the hole and get a snug fit. Make sure you don't strip the screw with your screwdriver! Good luck with your new steering setup :)

Does anyone how to fix a lubricant leakage problem in the rear differential gear box?
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
I found Team Associated's Green Slime very helpful. It's a small tube of green slime that you put on the rubber seals and everywhere you want to keep sealed. Works great for both my shocks and my diffs. Just make sure you don't get it mixed with the actual fluids. www.amainhobbies.com/team-associated-factory-team-green-slime-asc1105/p3068

@arandomhobbychannel6718
@arandomhobbychannel6718 6 жыл бұрын
Because the leakage is coming from the mount for the bearings, from the gear box, sorry i did not mention that earlier.
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 6 жыл бұрын
Well, from what you are saying it strikes me that it maybe isn't the diff that is leaking. It sounds like the grease from the gears in the diff housing is leaking out through the shaft output. It's not really a problem, at least you know the bearings on the diff housing are well lubed :) I wouldn't worry too much. Mine are the same but works great. You could put less grease on the gears next time you go in there.

If you are just a stock basher this is completely unneeded. The "slop" in the stock steering is almost nothing when bashing. Now in racing it is very much needed but many RC racers have very little ability to realize just how much of the upgrades they do for racing are just not needed for bashing. This is one of them.
@NorthernLightRC
@NorthernLightRC 5 жыл бұрын
You make a good point. In my opinion it’s not about bashing or racing, it’s a matter of grip level on the surface you’re driving on. The slop and weaknesses of the stock servo saver increases together with higher grip. In loose gravel you are pretty much golden with the stock setup, but once you turn onto asphalt you’ll quickly notice your high speed turn radius is increasing.
@zedorda1337
@zedorda1337 5 жыл бұрын
@@NorthernLightRC That is an undeniable truth. High grip exponentially exposes the weakness. I guess I kind of group high traction surfaces with racing too much. Although there is alot of oversteer in the Slash if you tweak the suspension correctly.

If there's slop in the screws you've got a slop part. HR Bell Cranks do not have slop in the screws that I've ever witnessed. They lock tight in the hole and they stay in without thread locker. You're besmirch their product with your thread locker OCD. Thread locker is an option to be avoided unless there is no other option. I should tell your mama you've been naughty.
