@@jessicakay3695 I still take it. I'm on a very low dose (25mg) and have been the whole time. My derm recommended going to a higher dose early on, but I stayed low because the diuretic side-effect was really powerful for me and I didn't wanna be peeing every 5 minutes. I'm not sure if I'll ever stop taking it, but I haven't seen my derm since before the pandemic, so maybe it's safe to get off it now. But my skin is so clear!!! Spiro was a lifesaver for me. In addition to clearing up acne, it made it so I could stop using acne medication soaps and BPO. Also, I didn’t have to worry about breaking out from stuff with oil in it, so I could expand my makeup choices. Along with retin-a, it gave me generally trouble-free skin. But I can’t take it in the daytime because it makes you have to pee, and there’s zero time in between when you realize you need to go and have to go. Definitely made me almost pee on myself a few times. You have GOT to get straight to the toilet the moment you feel like you have to pee with this medication. ALSO: Yaz BCP works wonders, performs like spiro and regulates hormones from menstrual cycle. It’s awesome.

Just a small reminder that it is a POTASSIUM-SPARING diuretic. While the dosages specific to acne treatment may not be too high, if you have any issues with HYPERKALEMIA (high potassium levels), this may not be the best route for you. Hopefully dermatologists will do labs before prescribing this. On that note, I love the effects of this for acne treatment and hair growth :)

I was put on this in my mid-late 20s briefly (in my 30s now) after breaking out on my jawline (I actually never really broke out here when I was young, and had not broken out in years at the time, so it was odd) , and just wanted to say - while effective for many, it made me pee like crazy, and it made my blood pressure too low, despite trying to keep myself hydrated. The whole experience was so uncomfortable, I had to be taken off after 2-3 months or so. It also didn't clear my skin at all. Just keep in mind, it still does what it is marketed to do. Ultimately, I started juicing and making smoothies again (I had dropped the habit because of timing issues/laziness), and my skin cleared up again. That's just what worked for me. HTH

Oral spironolactone cleared my hormonal acne but left me with horrible gut issues, weakness, fatigue, and low energy. And many of these side effects took a while to pop up and have taken SO long to heal despite quitting spiro years ago. Your acne will all come back when you stop it as well. @@NYS30 I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this! I totally know the feeling. Everyone’s situation is so different with hormones, but for me I had hypothalamic amenorrhea after quitting the pill & spiro, so I worked on easing my exercise and eating more calories to ensure my body felt safe enough to have a period. I also optimize my sleep as much as I can, keep stress down, try to eat as healthy as I can (though I definitely have pizza still and treats). Once I got my period back, my acne improved a lot. It’s not perfect, but it’s been a long process and I’m better than where I started. Best of luck!

Spironolactone is the ONLY thing that helped me clear my severe cystic acne. Around my period every month I would get a cyst on my chin so large that friends and family were concerned for me. If I bent over, the blood would rush to the cyst and it would make me cry. By the time one cyst would get flattened - not heal! - another would pop up. I’ve been on Spiro for 3 years and I have had only one small cyst since! It has changed my life and honestly saved my skin. I couldn’t suggest it more! I get my blood checked every 6 months for all levels, so just keep on top of that, but I’ve never had any issue.

I went on a high dose of Spiro and the side effects-what it did to my cycle, oil production EVERYWHERE, hair loss, I couldn’t deal with it. Also retinol for me has been more affective, spiro basically did nothing (was on it for a full year). When I went off of it, I gained 10 lbs. So you guys, my recommendation is even though you’re desperate, would not recommend.

@@juliat9211 I think you can deal with that by just adding oil to your scalp. I mean, it’s just one step you need to take to mitigate the effects of the medication. You chose not to do that. The common sense thing to do is just app,y hair or scalp oils. Also, if your skin was still over-producing oil, it’s probably because of some topical you were applying. If it stopped oil in your scalp, it stopped oil on your face. But if you are using harsh soaps or astringents on your skin, it will still over-produce oil. 🙄

I was on spironolactone for a little over a year. 3 months into taking it, it tanked my testosterone and I found myself on HRT. Between my Dermatologist, OBGYN, & Hormone Dr, they just put two and two together to figure out it was the culprit for my low test. Be careful! I don’t know why blood tests aren’t taken to check your hormone levels before taking this medication.

The only thing this woman said that I didn’t find to be 100% on point is that there’s no purging. Not to say she isn’t right, but acne can sit underneath the skin for up to 3 months before ever reaching the surface. I feel like this is probably why spirinolactone isn’t a long term solution (unless you plan to take it your whole life) cause I feel like the acne would just come right back once off the medication if it never comes up and out of the skin , no?
