Emonda Vs Emonda, Aluminium Vs Carbon and I’m sorry, but one ride will not do it for me. But I’m excited that the SL5 is quicker and more compliant, comfy and handles well, but more to come on the next ride.

Good video James. I had an Emonda ALR6 for a year or so, which I enjoyed and it was nice with full Ultegra drivetrain. I also put my Zipp 303s wheels on which reduced the weight a bit. But as I’m now 67 years old I wanted more comfort, so now happy with my 2019 Domane SLR. I look forward to seeing more videos on the Emonda. Stay safe on the roads. 👍

Thanks for dropping by Steve. I’m with you as to the Domane, looks an awesome bike with a much more relaxed look I have to say. Maybe something for me to consider when I’m needing more comfort, probably now😅 Doing well for 67 buddy👌

Lucky you I guess, I don't like Shimano shifting so on ALR I brought frame and having to spend a bit more money to build with SRAM

@@JamesSocialCycling Ally vs Carbon must be one of the biggest decisions facing a new bike buyer, so a good subject for a test. I'm good thanks, been out in the woods today - the rain has passed on up your way by the sound of it!

I love my new ALR 5. Got it in the cool blue/coral paint scheme. I simply could not bring myself to spend more on the carbon, as I am also a bigger guy, and it seems like I would mainly be paying for minor weight savings.
@JamesSocialCycling
@JamesSocialCycling 11 ай бұрын
There is marginal weight saving but the bikes ride like chalk and cheese. The comparison from ALR5 to SL5(though I do have Cosmics) is no competition. The frame is soooo much more comfortable and the bike over all is quicker, well it just feels quicker on the flats. I loved the ALR5 but I’m in love with the SL5😁 the only reason I purchased the SL5 was because I got on so well with the ALR5 so I’m not knocking it, really enjoyed riding it for 3 years and you get much more from a bike you built frame up. Cheers appreciate the comment😊👍

James just the video I was waiting for. I have the exact Emonda alr as you have and often wondered if it would be worth upgrading to carbon as I find the alr just a bit harsh but upgraded it with a set of Prime Black edition 28 carbon wheels which are brilliant and I also like the rim brakes but often wondered if the same set up with a carbon rim brake frame would be a bit more comfortable. Looking forward to your conclusions. Keep up the videos they are excellent.

Thanks Jim appreciate the feedback and glad I’m helping someone. I’m hoping for another ride this week before it goes back, but you’ll be lucky to get a new Carbon Emonda with rim brakes nowadays. A few spoilers to come me thinks as I’m a great lover of rim brakes, hate being pushed and that’s what the market is doing, pushing rim brakes out. Keep an eye out, I’ll be back with another shortly😊👍

I have the trek sl5 2022, its very fast on the flat and climbs up to 7%. Climbs of 15% , quite heavy actually . Downhills fast. Shimano 105 is a good groupset. I am an ex cat 2 road racing cyclist and winning strava kom's at the moment on the trek sl5. Its a mid range bike really, carbon and worth getting. Wheels are rubbish though. By the way, the emonda sl5 carbon looks high level, looks amazing

@@JamesSocialCycling ye, it is good. As i said, it does have a race feel the sl5 emonda, it is built for speed. The sl6 also uses the same frame. I would say on sporting courses, not very steep climbs, it could still get away with being fit for road races. The thing is, people when racing often pay for even higher end stuff up to 10 grand, but for sure the sl5 emonda is a race bike and not designed for leisure

@@landscapeandmonuments1615I had an sl5 disc with hunt carbon wheelset . It was good enough to win any race . Felt super quick for the price . The wheelset obviously ,made a huge difference. The original wheels are rubbish .changed the seat post and saddle . Moved onto an Aethos

I won't be buying any Trek bicycles. I had an unexpected falling out with the local Trek dealer. Apparently Trek makes their carbon frames in the same factory where Giant is made. They have an OK reputation. Aside from that, I'd prefer the Alu. It's I believe, a little less likely to get a dud, and I'm cynical about warrantees being honored.

Hi David, I hear you. I had BB issues with my Roubaix and the lifetime warranty was not so lifetime when it comes to a BB issue, so I will never buy another #specializedpileofpoo again. If you watch my new video(tomorrow) it will also point out an issue. Giant are supposed to be one of the better manufacturers out there but that is up for debate as well. Thanks for the message and hope you’re well😊👍

There is a $1000 difference between the aluminum and the carbon now. That’s a tough ask as is. My current road bike is a 2012 Trek 2.1 Alpha that weighs 21 pounds. I’m really hard pressed to spend $2200 on the Emonda ALR5 when the only real differences are 2 pounds of weight, disc brakes and being able to run 28s instead of 25s. My favorite local dealer is a Cannondale partner so I’d take a carbon synapse for $2500 over both Treks even though I love Trek from watching the TDF with my dad as a kid during the Lance era.

Cheers Eric. You can still get the SL5 2022 model here in the UK and that is only £300 difference in both sale prices. The bikes have gone up again, even the SL5 is now around £3300 but I’m not reviewing the 2023 model, I’m saying the sale price for the 2022 model is well worth the money and still available. Thanks again.😊👍

I went with alr as can use normal seatpost and white era paint, looking to build up frame so yes seems my alr 2023 be lighter than SLR 9 AXS (I'm aiming more for aero and life span), if say like for like it be £3k+ less money I hate the alr is advertised as H1.5 but I'm sure they give H2 instead
@JamesSocialCycling
@JamesSocialCycling 7 ай бұрын
H1.5 won’t be an issue. I’ve found the geometry no different and if it is then I’ve not noticed it. So you’ll get a lighter bike but the ride is chalk and cheese. ALR to SL5 that is. I expect it to be more miles apart with the SL6,7 and so on. I rode my alr5 for 3 years and the SL5 is sooo much more fun. That much I have learnt and in so little time. Good luck with the build will look good once done😊👍

@@JamesSocialCycling yeah I got a 6.7kg Planet X RTD90 but as my daily bike was mountain bike got stolen and want aero bike I picked Emonda route and alr more as lock up and not worry someone yank it and lock go through frame if was maybe carbon (was hard want aero but round seatpost so can use a normal seatpost and swap with axs dropper if want) Never heard of chalk and cheese before but wheels I'm building with berd spokes, maybe jump to 25mm tyres and use tyre pressure calculator and the carbon bike I always rode 22mm tubular at 100psi on British roads Yeah can't wait to get done but as how long take to save it might take 2-3 years to finish, dream be bang on 7kg with computer, pedals, sensors, tyre wiz with 50mm rims but unsure if still be when put lights and bell too, looks more might be 7.3kg at moment from manufacturer weight claims
