Not much of a comparison - I must say. More like side to side reviews of 2 bikes. Would be nice if you could let a few testers ride both bikes on the same course and then compare their aggregated ratings of both bikes on some key qualities (stiffness, compliance, sprinting, descending, etc). That would be a fair (fairer) head to head comparison. Just sayin

I agree, worthless “review”. A true test would at least ride the bike with the same wheelsets and tires, and a least a couple riders to get a true comparisons. I think most of us want to know stability on downhills, cornering predictability, frame features, frame weight, vibration dampening, and comfort for long rides. Obviously one is going to be better in those regards.

16 years ago, when Trek introduced the first post-Lance Madones, I told our district manager they needed an H1.5 cockpit. The 2-3cm gap from H1 to H2 was just too much. So I'm glad they finally brought H1.5 to the Emonda SL range.

Nice review. I have been considering both of these models for my next bike. I have learned two things. The Tarmac is longer and lower so will be a little more stable and easy handling at higher speeds. Also, i ran accross some bike aero data done in the uk that ranked the bikes with riders. The graph correlated closely to stack-reach ratio, meaning reducing the cyclist's frontal cross sectional area was the biggest aero benefit. The Tarmac is a little faster if you are flexible enough to be comfortable with the rider position. I'm a current Trek owner and may go Emonda because it is a tad more upright.

So you got essentially an entry level Emonda and a top of the range SL7...other than looks what are we supposed to be comparing the bikes on? That's a huge difference in the weight of the frames for the Emonda between the lower frames and upper. Most manufacturers the gap is more like the specialized where you gain 150 g give or take. 700g difference in frame weight and that doesn't include the fork seems like it is done on purpose to discourage enthusiasts from buying the lower tier bikes. Like the heavier frame is literally double the weight of their lighter frame - that's ridiculous.

@@roadcc Apologies if I sound negative. Just that most reviews from all companies are 4 or 5 out of 5. In addition I’d like to hear constructive criticism as this is what we look for when deciding to buy or not to buy. I understand nobody wants to fall out of favour with the bigger manufacturers but it’s the way I believe bike journalism should be. It also stops Joe public from just accepting anything a bike company offers. Id like to hear road.Cc or bike radar views on a bike not the marketing blurb that often gets commented on.

aero enhanced for the mountains vs aero enhanced for the flats? How does wind and drag know one is going up hill or going on the flat? Is the trek's geometry and stiffer parts of the frames different; one for hills and one for all around? Is that what is being said here?

chalk n cheese! when even the group set is different let alone the wheels and frame! eek sorry but a waste of time. I rode both before making my mind up, I went for SL7 S-Works Dura-Ace but swapped out the chainset to UFO Chain, Ceramic Speed OSPWS and BB The reason for my choice was simply one of comfort and riding technique, the SL7 suited me better and that at the end of the day for me was the driving factor and reason as both by the time one was finished were coming in at the 12-13k mark eek (My wife does not know!)

@@jbaairways2763 I do too I really enjoy it but I still want a sworks sl7 lol the idea of a carbon disc bike with bsa and an adjustable seat post is the kicker for me because I've experienced the isp cracking and I had to replace the whole frame. If I was more well off I'd buy the sl7 hands down but until then I'm satisfied with my SL0 disc because it's so close in geometry and the warranty replaces the frame with down time for shipping and swapping should the isp crack again. I guess that's what I see as the 4k difference in price is the bsa, seatpost, and I guess integration if people want to be fussy but I don't care about wires showing.

An earlier comment by another reader was spot on, comparing a mid level Emonda (8.23kg) to a top level Tarmac (6.85kg) is misleading. As a frame of reference, my 2015 Emonda SLR with Ultegra components weighs 6.8kg, a huge difference from 8.23kg and I’m sure handles very differently as well.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzfaq.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

I considered the Trek Emonda, the Specialized Tarmac, and the Giant TCR. I bought the Emonda because it has the prettiest paint job. Just kidding! The Emonda does have the prettiest paint job, but I actually bought it because my local independent bike shop, which is a dealer for Specialized and Giant, has not received any new bikes for months and did not know when a Tarmac or TCR might be available. The local Trek store had both a 2020 and a 2021 Emonda available in my size. I brought my 1994 Trek 2200 to the store and asked them to match the handlebar and seat position. The could not do so with the 2020 Emonda, which has Trek's H2 fit. The mechanic estimated the handlebars would be 3 cm higher. The 2021 Emonda has Treks H1.5 fit and could match the position of my 2200. Even though it was heavily discounted, I was happy to find a solid reason not to buy the 2020 Emonda so that I could avoid the dreaded BB90 bottom bracket. Both the Emonda and the Tarmac now have threaded bottom brackets. The TCR has a press-fit bottom bracket, but Giant claims to have few problems with their bottom brackets due to tighter tolerances.
