The armour was a neat concept, although I couldn't escape the memory of the Batmobile's deployable armour in the 1989 film. But that's a neat little shuttle for sure. An obvious evolution with additional features.

Red and green lights are port and starboard running lights, which you may not need in space but are a nod to traditional naval ships.

you know with the red and the green, that's actually a rule from aviation, green is the right, red is the left, its so you can see what side and direction something is coming at you from.
@Jack_Stafford
@Jack_Stafford 7 жыл бұрын
Kavinsky Smith yep it's actually a regulation worldwide in all Aviation and many other kinds of ships and planes that green is starboard and red is port for the reasons you just described that if you're heading towards something either in the air or on the water you can tell immediately whether the vessel is coming or going and always to tend to starboard to avoid collisions. I think it was great that Trek incorporated this from the very beginning into their Starships; it lends just one more detail of realism to signify Port vs. starboard two other ships nearby while navigating in close quarters. You'll also often see this repeated near docking stations and shuttle bay doors and other places where navigation needs to be very clear and universally understood.

16:30 One-way mirrors are not one-way. They're just fairly translucent, and one side is poorly lit so that a viewer on the other side can't see anything through the mirror, and thus is only able to make out their reflection.

Wait a minute. You both talk about the negative space on the Voyager shuttle that's filled in and extended on the SC-4. But that space in the back of Voyager's shuttle was the door! It opened completely for crew to embark and disembark. The Starfleet Command future shuttle doesn't have a door!

The red and green lights are supposed to be what is known as Navigational Lights. Green is for starboard and red is for port. In Star Trek this convention was supposed to be on all Federation ships and craft, both civilian and military, just as it is now on Earth. Boats of significant size, all Planes, and all other flying vehicles must have these lights. They are used to tell the observer which side is which. How does one know which side is supposed to be a certain color? The convention is that if it is on the right side of the vehicle in must be green; indicating the starboard side. If it is on the left side, it is red; indicating the port side. This convention carried over into the Star Trek franchise. Now as you might expect, this convention does not carry over to the ships from other political entities, such as the Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, etc. That is as it should be, because that convention is an Earth originated one that would not have been thought of on other civilized worlds. While I do like the design of this shuttle, I have to wonder about the person that designed it. Did the designer know about the purpose of the Navigational Lights? Apparently not. That makes this a less informed design, and is a design flaw in my opinion. Being a Federation ship, that convention would not suddenly be thrown out, when every other ship of the Federation is using it. To me this takes away from the realism of the franchise, which Gene Roddenberry was a stickler for.
@Jack_Stafford
@Jack_Stafford 7 жыл бұрын
L. Cleveland Major very well stated in a great explanation about navigational lights! they can be very crucial especially in close-quarter navigation such as in space dock or landing shuttles. As you said this has been a logical carryover in Star Trek from Earth convention so I'm not sure why suddenly it would not be part of this design. As you said that would be a design flaw in an otherwise interesting and functional evolution of shuttlecraft.
@GigaTrope

The orientation of the red & green lights also tell you if a ship is coming or going, red on the left means it is moving away, green on the left means it's coming towards you. Of course, since there is no horizon line in space, and ships can be "upside down", this function is completely lost for space ships...

@@barrybend7189 I would say Vulcans were the first to adopt the protocol; but being a prideful people, they may have only done so after seeing the Andorians do so, not wishing to be contrary, so to speak. Yes it does make a lot of sense. In this case, it allows everybody to orient their ships according to a common direction (which way is up?).

Head cannon for myself this is the shuttle for high ranking members in Starfleet command. Thats why it's the SC-4. So it's speedy and heavily kitted out. But it's not a standard for the time. Which explains why the Rhode Island doesn't have armor but the Shuttle does.

What was really cool about this technology is that it was not "that" far ahead. 1.Technology-Janeway's Shuttle can become invisible to borg. This came direct from the Hansons who researched the borg up close. The Delta Flyer uses this technology and vanishes from the Borg. several times. 2.Transphasic Torpedos-Either comes from the Hanson's or Krenium or a blending off these technologies. Janeway use's the Hanson's armband and passes through the interior shields and the Krenium had torpedoes that ignored shields completely. 3. The lovely armor-I like to think that was progression of the technology from the first season where Voyager were to face down an entire Kaazan fleet and install holo emitters along the entire hull to create fake holographic Talaxian fighters to fly around Voyager to divert weapons away. Perhaps later on they got the specs for conventional armor and remembered they had holo emitters covering the ship already.

fun show, worth seeing. Type 9's big brother is awesome!. Thank you Trekyards. Now, I believe the shape mentioned between the nacelles on the underside is the warp core/access panel. And the one on the roof either a docking port or a plug to put other pods on like on the roundabout. On the subject of ports/doors; where's the crew's door? Presumably still at rear, but to my eye it isn't as clear as in the type 9.

Though I guess they aren't completely different from TNG but as for the shuttles nacelles being from the Enterprise D I wouldn't say that they are very identical to Voyager's/the Intrepid class to which it is attached. There always seems to be a shuttle that mimics it's mother ship in terms of nacelles at least, the TOS shuttle, the "Final Frontier"/Ent-A shuttle a bit, the type 7 in TNG, the "Chaffee" for the Defiant with the nacelle cowlings up on it's back similar to the Defiant and then the type 9 much like Voyager. As far as narrower cockpit space maybe as it is a "Starfleet Command" shuttle it just has one pilot and carries or faeries flag officers with an assigned pilot vs an away mission/team shuttle like the Type 9 or ship shuttles.

Not really - ever wondered why the Enterprise J has no Phaser Strips ? Voyager pretty much tells you the direction of Federation Technology for the next few decades and then Enterprise provided some more clues on top too. Incidentally this isn't the same kinda of amour as The Defiant has though both burn the substance away - The Future armour replaces what is lost in real time (to some degree) but you can see it was having some trouble with the Borg after they started to adapt to it. Since it's essentially a solid projection the projection could be tuned just like shields can be to be more effective to counter-adapt to weapons fire or even layer energy inside the matter in layers. Or even throw chunks off if off and replace them if it needs to. It's more like a Replicator that makes armour and beams it to the outside of the ship maintaining the integrity as long as the power/ matter conversion systems last. It's a form of Particle synthesis and a a slightly different version of the same tech is what replaces a lot of other ships systems in later generations of Starships. Holographic armour is a thing but it uses different emitters (they are a gird pattern) and are more camouflage than direct armour - but they are related technologies, One question would be would or should the armour stay in place if the power fails or would it vanish - I personally think it should remain - but I suspect they'd make it disappear simply as it looks cooler to do that and is convenient for the story to show the armour fail and disappear. I don't think it would be a huge problem adapting the technology as it's clearly not going to allow a ship to function full speed and some kinds of electromagnetic and particle shields would work better against some things anyway - this armour is mainly useful for weapons fire or plasma storm protection and not so much against being hit with rocks say. I can see this providing good protection in the bad lands for example. I don't think it's a killer ap - any more than metaphasic shields are/were

90 Lancaster everything Voyager brought back would be adapted. No retcons needed. I also feel like the federation would study the crap out of everything Voyager brought back before using any of it. Then there would be the political side of things. Using the future tech technically violates the temporal prime directive also the federation suddenly becoming so advanced from all the other tech, especially militarily, would throw off the balance of power in the alpha, beta, and gamma quadrant. As we all know the federation would rather have peace over armaments.

Hey, I just randomly ran across this video. Pretty cool. I'll go back through the rest of the channel and see what you guys have. If I can add a few thoughts about these two shuttles (the side-by-side view...). Both are sexy as hell! Certainly both would earn a couple dollars thrown up on stage for them. They are exotic; sleek as fu*k; and both are probably dirty as hell in bed! My ONLY problem with the SC-4, in my humble opinion, and it's more of an aesthetics thing for me; are the nacelles. I know the whole body/hull of the SC-4 is supposed to be more "pointy" and the nacelles kind of add to this, but they are WAY too pointy in their own right. I also like how they have that little hydro-fin strip on the sides, but the points on them are WAY, WAY, WAY too pointy. I think the noses on the bussards (the red part) need to be just a tad bit more squared off. They are too needle like. But over all, fantastic!

That's one of the great advantages of being a fan of this show is we get to see actual models used in the shows that no one else has access to, which allows the kind of detailed discussion and analysis of the actual ships that really can't be rivaled anywhere else. I feel very fortunate to have found Trekyards and to be able to see ships not only from Star Trek but from many shows presented in the kind of detail that was never possible before. That comes with being a "ship fan" I think, the love of delving into the details! And many of those details are only available here exclusively so I am very thankful that fellow fans at Trekyards share this exclusive material with the rest of us that are into the details and analysis of ship design. Plus offering different renders and angles of the ships with lighting that best compliments them allowing the kind of detailed look we've become accustomed to here, which requires a lot of computer time and creativity from the crew. Having the model is one thing but being able to present it is a whole 'nother skill set that requires a lot of time and artistic ability. Combine that with the research done with as much canon information available and you really have the closest thing to a definitive Starship and Technology database that can be considered "official" that is available anywhere. I mean when you have a line of communication with the actual designers in many cases it doesn't get much more official than that! LOL Thanks so much to Captain Foley and Commander Cockings for consistently offering this truly unique and high quality product, especially at such a frequent pace. Proud to be a supporter and would encourage anyone else that appreciates this kind of quality and truly unique material to consider becoming an official supporter as well. It only takes a couple minutes on Patreon to give a few dollars a month for the hours of information and entertainment that Trekyards provides; that is an extraordinary bargain in my estimation. :) Cheers!

Watcher Zero that's what I thought, has to be based on transporter/replicator tech. holographic armor, armor made from force fields and light, so shields with fancy graphics. that just sounds silly even by star trek standards.
@watcherzero5256
@watcherzero5256 7 жыл бұрын
Holographic technology or 'Holo fields' is used by the Eldar in the 40k universe, it doesn't so much protect a ship as confuse an enemies sensors (across all spectrum including visible light) to think its in a different position which makes hitting it a lot harder, when you combine that with their ships high speed and manoeuvrability you have to saturate an area with fire in the hope of landing a hit. Arguably not as good as the Imperial void shield technology which opens a small blackhole to swallow the fire and convert it in to energy that's temporarily stored in capacitors and then dissipated in to the Warp (another dimension), though the Imperial void shields are very good with energy weapons they struggle with large volume/quantity of physical rounds as the energy required to be dissipated from the conversion of mass to energy is huge causing them to overload and possibly explode. The other races to use shields the Ork (called Energy Fields) it functions a lot like the Holtzman shield in Dune it slows or potentially stops fast moving objects while allowing slow ones to pass through. The Tau shields are gravity shields essentially projecting a dense wedge shaped opposing gravity well that slows and/or deflects the incoming beam/projectile.

It now occurs to me that I've been disappointed by every series' finale of Star Trek. This makes me sad.

All good things was a good finale, it had the same spirit of the TNG show. Endgame wasn't great, but it wasn't bad, just OK.

Endgame was a good episode. Wasn't as good as the DS9 finale but on par with the TNG one.

this was the dumbest moment in Trek History right up till JJ Abrams. I'm not sure it is even in the top 5 anymore.

Ah endgame, the single worst TNG era episode ever made, why because even the guy who played Jachotay went: That's it?! after the camera wrapped for the last time, and I did the same, plus if you want to keep TNG alive, you have to put this in the same box as threshold and the final episode of enterprise, IE it never happened for it to have a chance at existing again. just because of all that universe breaking tech it brought back. slipstream, batmobile armor, trans phasic torpedos, on and on and on plus the last episode of enterprise tried to tie it in with cannon, and ruined the pegasus while it was at it, one of the really good season 7 episodes. and it was so bad that even Tobias was like it was great to see the D again, its just a shame it was such for such a terrible episode. and it didnt even tell us what they had missed on earth in the meantime either, like what happened to all their families and what happened to everyone else on the ship once they got back. and that's what killed trek in a nutshell, nothing mattered anymore with the latter seasons of it. as all it was was visual candy with no brains to it. and I still remember seeing the episode for the first time and the only reason I watched it was because I was like welp might as well see how this ends. hell the same thing I did with season 4 of enterprise, I stopped after dear doctor, and only saw the ending, which was ashit as I thought it was gonna be.

Kavinsky Smith I have to disagree with you on this one my friend. I found the finale very well written with plot twists that actually surprised me and a level of detail and storytelling that wasn't always consistent in the rest of the series. Yes there are some issues like why didn't she go back to when the ship went into the Badlands in the first place but overlooking things like that I was very happy with the production value and performances from the actors and I really do feel like it ended the series very well and personally I prefer it to the end of the Next Generation and certainly more than Enterprise or Deep Space Nine. I'm not saying the series itself was better I just prefer its finale. But I do certainly understand why others would strongly disagree!
