Alternative as a genre is literally thinking outside the box of whatever music you normally make, or music that isn't often heard in mainstream music. Saying that artists do "horrible attempts" at the genre doesn't make sense because that would imply that Alternative has a specific sound that is special to this genre, which there isn't.
