I mean very old pie recipes which in a sense are traditional pies call for both meat and fruit fillings and the reason was before refrigerators they had a way of preserving meat for up to 4 months that worked by using a fruit and meat mixture with a few other ingredients in a fully sealed mason jars and that would be used as pie filling. So in a sense traditional pies contain both fruit and meat

So, when I was growing up and I was learning to make pies with my grandmother, we used to take the pie crust scraps, mix in a little extra sugar, make them into random shapes and bake them up separately as a treat.
