Alec Wilkinson interviews Trey as part of the New Yorker Festival in 2015. He plays 7 songs during this interview. Lots of good stuff in here. This was coming off the heels of a very successful Phish summer, and Trey's participation in Fare Thee Well.

Are you kidding me? He was having a TERRIBLE time articulating sentences/points, and he appears to be of average at best intelligence. Don't get me wrong, I have liked Phish since they started (okay - on and off), as well as most of the other things he's done; he's a fantastic guitarist. But so many brain dead Phish heads worship him. Come on, now. Maybe you just haven't actually heard an articulate person speak.

I flew into NO,LA for the jazz fest. I had real long hair ,tye-dye t-shirt etc. and the guy sitting next to me on the plane saw me and asked, are you going to see the phish . I told him that I was a deadhead and that I hated the Phish. He laughed and told me that he was Trey Anastasio's father.

Such a wonderful interview. I wish Alec didn't interrupt at 42:24. Trey was talking about how his parent's divorce caused him to seek intimacy and connection with others at time when he was a confused 15 year old kid. That obstacle led to the songwriting sessions that continue to this day as well as the cohesion the band continues to have after 40 years together. I've been a voracious phan since 91, and I have never heard this story. Does anyone know more about this? I will definitely use this as a teaching lesson for my students. How we deal with adversity can become our superpower.

Jerry Garcia was asked who his favorite guitar player was, and without hesitation Jerry replied Steve Kimock. I'm pretty sure if Jerry was alive today, and he was asked the same question. He might answer Trey Anastasio. Interesting to note that Steve Kimock's son John Kimock has been touring with Mike Gordon sometimes and really killing it.

The sad thing is we never got to see Trey play with Jerry. The happy thing is we did get to see him play with Carlos Santana... and Neil Young... Sadly trays performances with the dead are a little bit forgettable. I mean he did a good job. But it just didn't really vibe. Probably because they didn't rehearse enough together as a band. He was just thrown into that situation the way it sounds he did his best and he did a great job.

Classic how he implied that the dysfunction of the surviving members really made him appreciate his band. That must have really given him a reality check and a grateful feeling that phish are so cohesive and they're nearly always on the same page. Love the Bill Walton references.
