Another excellent running session. George VI looked very impressive hauling six coaches. Racing down from the elevated section reminded me when on a press run they achieved 114 mph and rocked over the crossovers at Crewe much too fast and nearly didn't stop.

An action packed video this week Oscar, most enjoyable once more. I am really impressed with the running qualities of your blue T/C set. It leaves me wondering wat is so wrong with mine. I quite honestly did not expect to see King George VI make it up the elevated section, again that was very impressive. The Blyth & Tyne show was also full of action, such a variety. The quality of the Lego trains now is brining them into the bonafide model railway market. The work in progress was very evident. Regards, David.

Another superb video Oscar, you did well catching those runaway coaches coming down the elevated section. There were some nice looking layouts at the open day and what a lucky find with those Coronation coaches. They go for crazy prices these days and are quite hard to come by despite them being from Hornby's budget range. Blue ones are much easier to find as Hornby have remade them but I'm after some crimson ones to go with my Duchess class, maybe one day. All the best, cheers Rob.

Good morning Rob, definitely a lucky catch with the coaches coming down the elevator track, could've gone horribly wrong. It's always a nice visit when this club has an open day it's a lovely large space above the local Asda store which is a relatively newly built building. There seems to be relatively little information about the maroon coronation. Scott cultures, the Pat Hammond book. I have simply says if I'm reading it correctly, a small batch of the maroon coronation coaches may have been made in the mid 90s, and another batch was made in 2001 and goes on to suggest that there will be more information in volume 4, sadly, I don't think volume for was ever produced. It would be great to know more about the maroon coaches and the variations produced. All the best. Oscar

Good video here Oscar, that model of King George VI looks excellent, I do have a streamlined princess coronation class myself but it’s one of the recent tooled hornby ones, it is though the preserved one which is 6229 Duchess of Hamilton, hope you had a good time at the show you went to, keep up the great work. Just a quick word about the coaches you had running round with the King George, according to what I have heard the ones you had which have the gold stripes down the side never ran in the UK, a rake of LMS coaches was put into this livery when locomotive 6229 Duchess of Hamilton which at the time had had its name and number changed to 6220 Coronation went over to America in the 1930s, as far as I’m aware and have heard the crimson streamlined princess coronations never ran in the UK with a set of coaches in the same livery.

That was fun. A nice trans-world train combo. The models look great on the elevated section with those solid looking sidewalls. I have done the same thing with spacers between the wheels on a lot of my coaches and bogie wagons. It's amazing what a slight increase in the back to back measurement makes to the general running. The idea of one of the wheels sliding side to side on the axle doesn't always work in real life, no matter how freely they slide. That's my experience anyway 😊

Hey Oscar, superb as ever thanks for sharing. I bought some LMS streamline coaches in the 80s 40 years ago now wow. I then discovered eBay a few years ago and finished my collection off but they were very expensive. I actually supplemented three of them like your new ones where I discovered, the old ones are made in Margate. The new ones are made in Hong Kong and they sit about 1 mm lower so I might have to change the bogies. Morning Oscar, wow that was some start to things this week, that trans continental is quite some beast, the whine of those wheels!!! When you fired it at the elevated section I found myself holding my breath to see if it would make it. What a good collection of layouts at that Blyth and Tyne demo. Hats off to them it must have taken ages to set up. Your must have had a good day. Seeing the King George V1 pulling the coronation coaches, didn't they look fantastic. The TC ran up the elevated section much better the second time, looked good. What can you say about the KGV1 that look totally effortless going around the elevated section, what a beautiful engine she is. Great mornings running Oscar really enjoyed that. Take care Eddy xxx

Hi Oscar, Beautiful KGVI and coaches, a lovely thing to have. Interesting experiment re wheelspin and track cleaning on the incline, solved by pulling rather than pushing 👍. Philosophy on needing, not needing but having anyway is always a winner. 🙄 when I am asked the question, do you really need another train, answer as above. 😀

Hi Oscar ,, yet another great train running session. When you showed the lms coaches you bought from the train workshop you videoed I thought , gee i hope you run them , and then you got another 3 out to make a rake of 6 carriages ,, wow ,, how awesome is that to see 6 of them all lined up and running like that and behind an lms coronation too. I near bought a coronation the same as that one you have but when i looked into it it just didn't look good like yours does as it was as rough as rough as guts in condition and needed work too to get it moving and needed to replace a few bits on it. The other problem was the guy that had for sale wanted near $200 aus/d for it. They are slowly growing on me so I might get around to getting some coronation cars and a loco too in the future. Also an awesome save on the down hill detachment of the transcontinental coaches & well timed to get them to hook back up again too as I thought is was going to see some transcontinental carnage happening but you timed it well to get it all good with no derailments haha. Hey as Im writing this i had an epiphany where the drag on the transcontinental coaches and all carriages with the open axle boxes. Ok so the wheels are 3 pieces ie 2 wheels and an axle that sits inside the open axle box. It may be a bit of work and you can use your 3D printer if you have to engineer some of these bits. So the drag is caused by the wheel on one side of the axle having to turn in conjunction with the wheel as its pressed onto the axle so the axle and wheel on one side spins and stays in place and the other wheel spins freely. My thought was to take the axle out and turn down the axle to as smooth as the spinning side possibly even put the axle in a drill and use a rough grit 80 grade sand paper or a fine file or even a stone or use a grinder or a small dremel to grind off axle splines smoth to the same size as the other free spinning side or even a fraction less so both wheels spin freely on the axle. Now I know the fixed wheel onto the axle keeps it all from coming apart but my thoughts were to make up a cap type of axle end cap & axle carrier in one piece to go into either side of the open box part and make the pieces on the smallest of small cambers so when you fit them to the open axle boxes the caps act as a carrier for the axle too so that the axle spins too in the carrier cap in the open boxes. Now where the wheels are concerned you could keep the original plastic wheels too but to reduce more drag you could cut and file the plastic axles down to say level to the outer flanges of the tops of the wheels so the there less drag on the axle and wheels. Now to keep the spacing within its 14.1mm to 14.5mm back to back measurement you could put like an axle sleeve loose over the axle and plastic washers in between the sleeve and wheels on either side or even just the sleeve in between both of the wheels that sit over the axle but free of both wheels and spins easly on the axle and will keep the inner measurement and will keep the axle and wheels to keep them in there proper on track measurements. The only other thing that I just thought of is you may have to put a plastic washer inbetween the wheel and the bogie ie the same size as the axle and big enough to stop the wheel from rubbing on the inner part of the bogie. So putting this all together would be. 1. Insert Encap/axle carrier to go into the open box bogie in 1 end one/either end (maybe a drop or 2 of good sulerglue to keep it in the open carrier). 2. Put axle through (just like setting the original wheels and axles) but add the washer the sleeve the wheel and then the other washer and then add the other end cap/bearings carrier. Or alternatively you could just make up the open box bearing type caps that go into the bogies with a taper for the axle side to fit a set of steel wheels and axles with an isolating side into the old metal bogies or trucks as some people call them. Knowing my luck its already been done but anyhoo its an idea and I might do it myself one day as as I have lots of old triang trains with open box axles that have a heck of a lot of drag in them and really eould like to giv3 them all a second chamnce to,ride therails and also saves on wear,andmtear on our locos that pull them too. Anyways gr8 video and it been a heck of a long day and im off to bed after just seeing its 3.45 In the morning haha. Cheers from John in Australia.

Good morning Rob, thank you again for watching. It's great to hear that you enjoy the video. The coronation Scott coaches in maroon always seem to come round quite a high price. From what I read they were only made for a very short period of time in limited numbers.. A few years ago, I almost bought a full set of the early silver TC coaches that somebody had already replaced all the wheels on and painted a stripe down the side, they had used those brass pin point bearings in the axle boxes along with contemporary insulated metal wheels. In the end, I didn't buy them because of the hand-painted stripe down the side. I may at some point have a go at changing the wheel sets over, but I quite like them running in their original state, a simple spacer as you suggest between the two wheels on the axle makes a massive difference. I've done this on a number of other models. Sometimes it's just one set adjustment that need the adjustment and the rest are fine. All the best. Oscar

Hi Oscar, I enjoyed the trip to the show.. Nice to see what other people are up to? The LEGO trains always seem to have great "play value".. I Really loved watching the Transcontinental Double Ended Loco and coaches running on the layout.. I was surprised to see it make it up the incline though.. I would have to use two locos to achieve this feat on my layout? It must be all of the wheel cleaning that you have done? Those old T.C. coaches are a "very hard to pull" load? I often wonder about the early 'lash ups', shown in the catalogues of the day... With "Dummy" locos and "B units?? The poor old locos had a big load on, before the coaches were even added? Especially a full set of four coaches including a baggage car? I do not have an "un-powered" Double ended loco".. But I often run a full T.C. train of red and silver coaches.. However, I substitute a second R 55 loco instead of the "Dummy".. The "B" unit seems to stay in between them OK, and the two locos can pull the full set of coaches up the incline (just)? It looks good, but it sure is noisy?? Thanks again, for a great and informative video.. Another trip back to the great years of "playing trains"? (Nice save, on the way down the hill.. By the way).!. :-).

Good morning Robin, the Lego trains do look fascinating, especially the great colours available. The two R55s together sounds like the a good solution. A full group of those early models and the silver coaches with metal bogies and early wheels are very heavy load even on level ground as you say. And the very early motor XO4 motor bogie much less powerful. All the best. Oscar

Good morning Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Well that was a great video Oscar, your Triang Hornby King George V1 locomotive and it's rake of coaches looks amazing, and your three new coaches really look the part Oscar, the full train looks stunning, and one can imagine it thundering along at top speed thru the countryside. The CO BO locomotive is another of my favorite diesels , I think it has a great shape and looks great in BR green, I wonder if there's any preserved on private railways ? Your Trans Continental locomotive and coaches look very impressive, I had the same locomotive as a little lad but my continental coaches where all silver. I have happy memories playing with them for hours, and your visit to the model railway exhibition was very interesting to see so many different types of layouts. Thank you once again for another amazing video Oscar, I am going to have my tea and toast now, i forgot to get some more Warburtons toasted tea cakes so I will have to make do with Warburtons white sliced loaf. Good morning Martin, the two sets of trains are both very striking, terrific to hear you had the silver set as a child. I've always thought the Cobo was a rather interesting design looking back at its introduction it's hard to imagine how it's found its way into production. But a great piece of railway heritage. I do have a two rail version which I haven't rung for ages. Must be time to get it out for a try on the series 3. There is a terrific picture by Terence Cuneo on the 1972 catalogue cover of a pair of Cobo's halling the short lived Condor freight service. I have been on the lookout for a second Cobo either two or three rail at a sensible price to try and make a train sets size version of the Condor... Maybe one day. What would be impressive to me would be a computerised points system and running schedule yet your layout seems to be the nearest to it i have seen. Strenuous attempts at providing noise immunity would have to be taken using opto isolation provides true logic level control (as opposed to edge triggering) and the use of reliable opto isolators which will not degrade in no time and become useless.

I have a question relating to the blue double ended diesel, it might be a silly question, so please forgive my ignorance. But when running the loco forward, is the drive bogie in the front or at the back of the loco? I know the loco will be at the front of all the carriages, but I'm referring to the direction of the engine itself.
