Weld retip a claw on an emerald

This video shows how I reduce the risk of retipping a claw on an emerald with the emerald still in the ring.
I use the Lampert PUK 5 jewellery welder to weld the tip on.
I start by cutting the existing remnants of the claw away from the emerald to expose the edge of the emerald so that I can lay the new claw onto the surface of the emerald and weld it solidly onto what is left of the existing claw (welding the tipping wire on sideways protects the emerald from the blast of the weld, which could harm it)
Then I build it up to be strong by welding it while holding gold wire close to the weld so that the wire gets sucked into the weld.
I snip the tipping wire off, being careful not to snip the emerald.
At the end of the video is a photo of the finished job after cleaning the soot off and shaping and polishing the claws (not shown in the video - I may do a video to show this process).
The settings used on the PUK 5 are :
Gold, welding mode on the left of the five modes (standard mode on the PUK 3) 25 to 30%
The ring is 18ct yellow and white gold.

Thanks for making your videos. I purchased an Orion welder about 1 year ago. Your videos got me started. I have watched them all about 10 times.

Which Orion unit did you get and how is it compared to PUK?

@@allenl9214 I got the Orion 150s. I have never used a Puk so I can't be of help there but I will say I purchased a LaserStar laser welder and have only use my Orion for some tipping on color stone jobs. I am so new with the laser my aim is not what ot should be yet and it is safer to use the pulse ark welder for me. If you are torn between a laser and a pulse ark welder I would go for the laser even if it is a low power laser. Most of the problems I had with the Orion was porosity and I am using argon. I have none of those problems with the laser.

@@Yubber2127 can you use a laser without argon? I was very close to go with the 150s because of price and I think its safer around stones but might consider a laser like the Orotig Midi

@@allenl9214 Yes I only use argon for white metals. With the pulse ark I have to use it with all metals.

Hi, the PUK 5 is the one I use and has 5 modes for each type of metal. That gives a good range of different types of weld and I find it very controllable. The PUK 3 is the one I had first and was much more basic but still very good.

I have enjoyed all the videos you have produced, thanks. How would you handle hollow ware, settings gold mainly. I would be interested, maybe a video! since I last contacted you I am progressing well with my PUK5.

Hi Sam, good to hear you are making progress. Hollow stuff is best avoided as you can get in real trouble with it. If it is thick enough gold, then it's ok to weld but if it's a cheap, thin item, it's very easy to blow a hole in it and once that happens, it's very difficult to salvage it back to a decent condition. In the past, I have repaired such holes only to blow another one next to it and have struggled. Best avoided altogether if the item looks like it is thin.
